pMiddlebury, Vermont - Arthur Maurice Levy, MD, age 85, passed away on Thursday, January 7th, surrounded by his family. Art was born on November 20, 1930 in Saranac Lake, New York, son of Dr. Edward and Mildred (Aaronson) Levy. /ppArt received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1952, and graduated from Cornell University Medical School in 1956. He continued his medical training at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City, completing a residency in Medicine in 1958. He came to Burlington, Vermont the following year, completing a residency at Mary Fletcher Hospital in 1959. Art became the first Cardiology fellow at Mary Fletcher and the University of Vermont in 1960. He completed a fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at Children’s Hospital in Boston in 1963, applying his training to the University when he returned. /ppAt that time, the field of cardiology was advancing rapidly and Art was one of an elite group of physicians to be awarded a five-year teaching scholarship from the American Heart Association. This opportunity allowed him to bring emerging knowledge in the field to patients by ensuring practitioners were providing the most up-to-date care. /ppAs a native of Saranac Lake, in the Adirondacks, it was important to Art to give something back to the region. In 1975 he implemented an outreach cardiac clinic in Malone, New York. He made monthly visits to Alice Hyde Medical Center and subsequently included the Canton Potsdam Hospital and other hospitals. He personally conducted these clinics for more than thirty years. His pioneering work resulted in greatly improved quality and access to medical care in the northern region of New York, and in Vermont. Art’s kind, relaxed, compassionate manner, coupled with his vast cardiac knowledge and experience, gave a special comfort to those facing the uncertainty of cardiac illness. His ability to integrate the art of medicine with the science of medicine positively impacted the lives of all the patients he cared for. /ppThroughout his career, Art exhibited a lifelong quest for knowledge and education. He took two sabbaticals abroad to further his knowledge in the field of Cardiology. In 1973 he was an Honorary Consultant in Medicine at Guy’s Hospital in London where he researched electrophysiology. He returned to Vermont to establish the first Electrophysiology Lab in New England at MCHV. He continued his education while serving as visiting consultant at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in England. /ppDuring his tenure at the Fletcher Allen, Art served the Director of Cardiology, and the Director of Clinical Cardiology. Art was appointed Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics for the University of Vermont Medical Center and was honored as an Emeritus Professor of Medicine in 2010. /ppAs with medicine, Art applied the same passion to all his pursuits in life. Growing up in Saranac Lake, Art embraced the Adirondacks, especially the winters. As a youth he was an outstanding figure skater who competed in nearby Lake Placid, a career highlighted by competitions with Dick Button. “80 Yard Levy” enjoyed football and was an exceptional baseball player, eventually making the Ray Brook Ramblers, a minor league team. Later on, Art became a devoted New York Giants football fan, win or lose. Each year he looked forward to seeing his brother Allan, longtime physician for the team, and the staff and players at the Giants Training Camp. /ppArt was a true family man. He married his high school sweetheart from Saranac, Sally Smith, in 1955. They shared the same love of art, music, education, nature, the out-of-doors, traveling and friends. He and Sally spent a great deal of their time on Saranac Lake and Lake Champlain boating and camping with family and friends. Their love of travel began when they were stationed in Okinawa, Japan, while Art served as a physician in the U.S. Army, Medical Corps. They spent extensive time in England, Europe, Canada and the United States, exploring cities, towns and countrysides. Art had a particular fondness for all things Italian, especially the language. /ppWhile traveling, Art developed a keen interest in antiques, especially oil and watercolor paintings, and ceramics. He enjoyed searching for unique treasures, researching signatures, styles and artists, and finding under-appreciated paintings to lovingly restore and reframe. He also had a deep sensibility for music. Art got his first taste playing in a jazz band in his early teens, joined the Harvard University Band in college, and later he developed a strong appreciation for the jazz greats. He enjoyed sharing his interest by taking his family to the Saratoga Jazz Festival in the summer. /ppMore than anything, “Papa” loved to gather his children and grandchildren for annual events, travel and family celebrations. Known for his storytelling and witty sense of humor, he kept everyone laughing. He was sweet, generous, and adored. /ppArt is survived by his wife, Sally; his son, Alan Levy, his daughters, Susan Levy Guran and Lynn Levy Bosworth, his son-in-law, David Bosworth; his six grandchildren, Tucker Levy, Emma Levy, Andie Guran, Burt Guran, Aileen Bosworth and Trey Bosworth; his nieces, Debbie Volusher, Lisa Wells, Katie Smith, his nephew, David Smith; and his brother, Allan Levy. /ppThe family wishes to thank Dr. Brad Armstrong, Dr. John Hayden, Dr. Bill Hopkins, Dr. Diana Barnard; the staff at the University of Vermont Medical Center and Porter Medical Center; the staff at Addison County Home Health and Hospice; the staff at the Residence at Otter Creek and the Haven with great appreciation to Fawnda Buttolph, Deb Wilkinson, Tim Ryan, Elizabeth Pelletier, Crystal Phelps, Stephanie Schmidt, Lori Cyr, Connie Tupper, Danielle Spaulding, Karen Shackett, Amy Rochon, Kenadi Datillio, and Emily Leopold. /ppThe family held a private memorial in January. A celebration of Art’s life will be held at the All Souls Interfaith Gathering Center, 291 Bostwick Farm Road in Shelburne, Vermont at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2016. /ppFor those wishing to make a donation in Art’s memory, please consider a donation in memory of Arthur M.
