pMichael F. Bashaw, Sr., 72, of 314 William St., Cape Vincent, NY passed away Saturday, June 11th, at home surrounded by his family. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 15th, at 4:00 at St. Vincent of Paul Church in Cape Vincent, NY. In lieu of calling hours the family will receive guests at the Roxy Hotel and Restaurant in the Cape from 4:00 until 6:00 Tuesday./ppArrangements have been entrusted to Cleveland Funeral Home, Cape Vincent, NY./ppMichael was born February 25, 1944 in Ogdensburg at Hepburn Hospital with his twin sister Patricia, to Lloyd Irving and Mary Areta Fisher Bashaw./pp Michael was a 1961 graduate of Madrid-Waddington Central School and received his Bachelor’s degree from SUNY Plattsburgh in Elementary Education. While there, he was Class Treasurer, President of Pi Alpha Nu Fraternity, and a member of the state championship college tennis team. He received his Master’s degree from SUNY Cortland and later completed his Superintendent’s certification at SUNY Brockport. He taught Grades 5 and 6 in the Ithaca City School System at Henry St. John School and Danby Elementary School before becoming a Vice Principal and became Acting Principal at Northeast Elementary School. At that time, he moved with his family to Cape Vincent and became Principal of Cape Vincent Elementary School in Thousand Islands Central School District. From 1972 through 2000 he served the majority of his years as Cape Vincent Principal, and TI Middle School Principal. Mike was considered a mentor and leader in education. During his tenure the district was recognized by the State Education Department as a Pacesetter District for the state and as having Schools of Excellence which was initiated through the Effective Schools program and Excellence and Accountability program. He also served for several years after his retirement on the Thousand Islands Board of Education. /ppMichael was Cubmaster and Scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts of America in Cape Vincent, was Director of the Cape Vincent Youth Commission, was coach of summer youth teams in baseball and coached school modified soccer teams, was an Associate Faculty member for SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Cortland, and SUNY Oneonta as a Supervisor of student teachers for thirteen years. /ppHe was predeceased by his parents, his sister Patricia Young, and daughter-in-law Colleen McCarthy. He was the grandson of William and Lois Munson Bashaw and Erastus George and Mary Harriet (Mae) Nugent Fisher. /ppA marriage to Lorinda M. White in 1965 ended in divorce in 1986. In 1999, he married Barbara J. Barnett Swenson Bashaw at his son Michael’s home on the shore of the St. Lawrence River. /ppMichael is survived by his wife, Barbara, sister Bonnie Bashaw-Strome, sons Michael (Lynn) and Timothy, daughter Molly, stepsons Erik (Julie) and Adam (Meghan), stepdaughter Jill (Daniel), and grandchildren Julia, Abigail, Andrew, Jack, Alison, Addison, Brynn, Cooper, Mischa Grace, Grady, Amelia, and nieces, nephews and extended family. /ppMike enjoyed music, painting oils and acrylics, reading, spending time with his children and grandchildren, relaxing at the family camp on Lake Ozonia, and volunteering in his community.
