pGouvernuer - Allen R. “Al” Douglass, 78, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at his home./ppA funeral service will be held Saturday, June 18th at 11:00 am at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Fr. Stephen Rocker of St. James Church officiating and burial in Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur. Calling hours are Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 to 11:00 am./ppAl was born in Morristown, NJ on January 27, 1938, the son of Holmes and Elizabeth Schellinger Douglass./ppHe graduated from high school in Madison, NJ and from Tennessee Wesleyan College with a Bachelor’s degree. He furthered his education with classes at SUNY Potsdam and St. Lawrence University./ppAl married Mary Storrin on June 25, 1966 at St. James Catholic Church with Msg. Robert McCarthy officiating./ppAl was a teacher at Gouverneur Central School for 34 years, served as an athletic coach in basketball, volleyball, golf, and soccer, and a broadcaster for Gouverneur sporting events./ppHe enjoyed wintering in New Port Richey, FL, playing golf, and spending time with his kids and grandkids. Al was a member of the Gouverneur Elks Lodge, Gouverneur Country Club, and served as an usher at Steinbrenner Field for NY Yankees spring training the past 5 years./ppAl is survived by his wife Mary, his children James and Laura Douglass of Seven Lakes, NC, Kevin and Shari Douglass of Voorhees, NJ, Sarah Douglass and her companion Christopher Daley of Charlotte, NC, his grandchildren Ruthie, Jack, and Lindsay Douglass. He is also survived by a brother Thomas and Lisa Douglass of Iowa, nieces and nephews.
