Samuel R. Dowling I

pSamuel R. Dowling I, age 85 and formerly of 631 Oswegatchie Trail Road, in Oswegatchie, NY, passed away on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 21st at the Clifton-Fine Hospital, after being stricken at his home. /ppFamily and friends may call at the Hawley Funeral Home on Sunday, September 25th for calling hours from 1-3, with the funeral to follow. The burial will be held at the Oswegatchie Cemetery, following the funeral./ppSamuel was born to Vincent and Clara Slate on October 1st, 1930 in Flat Rock, Oswegatchie. He is a graduate of the Oswegatchie School and was enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the Korean War./ppHe was married to Charlotte Adams on January 31st, 1954 at the Oswegatchie Baptist Church. /ppSamuel worked at the J&L Steel Corporation in Benson Mines for many years as a millwright, where he later retired. Following his retirement, he worked at Fort Drum. He later, proudly owned and operated his own business; Sam the Tire Man in Oswegatchie, NY/ppHe was a lifetime member of the American Legion, where he was Chaplin for many years. Samuel was a a lifetime member of the VFW , a member of the Clifton-Fine Rifle and Pistol Club, and a member of the NRA. /ppSamuel attended the Oswegatchie Methodist and Baptist Church. He also volunteered as a bus driver to pick up children for church services every week./ppAmong his survivors include: his wife Charlotte Dowling, and 3 daughters: Judy Dowling of Fine, NY, Vicky Dowling of Oswegatchie, NY and Dolores Dowling of Newton Falls, NY. He is survived by his brother, Elmer Dowling of Sucker Lake, by 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and also by 3 great-great-grandchildren. Samuel is predeceased by 2 daughters, Donna and Trudy Dowling and by his brothers, Herschel Dowling, Wendell Dowling, and Raymond Dowling. He is also predeceased by his sister Joan Dowling./ppIn his younger years, Samuel enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed spending time at the target range, having picnics at Flat Rock, and spending time with his family. There will be a full Honor Guard Ceremony at the Graveside by Mervin-Eno Post 1539, American Legion following the funeral service at the Hawley Funeral Home./ppMemorial contributions can be made to the Oswegatchie Baptist Church./p
