pMASSENA- Thomas B. Murphy 91, of 43 Dover Street, passed away Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at the Massena Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family./ppThomas was born December 10, 1924 in Plattsburgh, NY, son of the late Thomas J. and Catherine Buckley Murphy. He was a 1942 graduate of Massena High School and later attended Clarkson College. On September 18, 1943 he entered the US Army and served with the 100th Signal Company during WWII, until his honorable discharge on April 11, 1946. He married Ruth M. LaFlesh on August 14, 1948 at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Michael Jarecki officiating. Ruth predeceased him on January 12, 2008./ppTom first worked for Ed Lewis as a land surveyor until he began his career at Alcoa as a Draftsman. Tom retired after 32 years of service, but later did consulting work for them. Tom also was co-owner of Wilkins & Murphy Appliance Repair for several years. /ppHe was a communicant of the Church of the Sacred Heart, and a member the American Legion Post #79. Tom was a very active member of the Elks Lodge BPOE #1702, where he once served as an Exalted Ruler and was their treasurer for many years. As a Democrat, he served as Village of Massena Trustee for two terms. He also served on the Industrial Development Board, Village of Massena Planning Board and was instrumental in the formation of Massena Skating Club. Tom was also a member of the Massena Rod and Gun Club and the Massena Country Club for many years./ppTom was an avid sports fan, supporting his family with their sporting events. He was an avid fan of Clarkson Hockey and regularly attended their games. He was a skilled carpenter and craftsman, remodeling several homes that he and his wife lived in./ppTom is survived by his children and their families, Mary Jane Murphy of Binghamton; Daniel and Jan Murphy, Timothy J. Murphy, and Thomas C. Murphy and his companion, Jill Hargrave, all of Massena; a son-in-law, Thomas Parker of Brockport, NY; seven grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren./ppIn addition to his wife and parents, Tom was predeceased in death by a daughter, Katherine Parker on December 19, 1994; and a brother, James Murphy./ppFriends may call Thursday 3-7:00 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where the Elks Lodge will hold a memorial service at 6:30 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, 9:00 AM at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Tojo Chacko celebrating.
