Louis M. Baxter

pMassena: Louis M. Baxter, 22, of Massena, was recently identified by the US Army after going MIA during the Korean Conflict over 60 years ago. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 11:00 am at Calvary Cemetery, Massena with full Military Honors. He will be laid to rest next to his mother./ppLouis was born on September 9, 1928 in Massena, the son of the late Michael and Catharine (Zuder) Lesniewski. He attended school in the Massena area and following graduation joined the US Army in 1948. Louis was assigned to the 7th infantry division during the Korean Conflict. While stationed in Korea, his unit formed a defensive position at the Changjin Reservoir trying to repel an attack from the Chinese Peoples Volunteer Force. At the end of the battle the US Army reported Sergeant Baxter missing in action in December of 1950 and later declared his death in December of 1953. At this time Sergeant Baxter was promoted to rank of Private Sergeant First Class. In 2001, during an excavation at the Changjin Reservoir, a burial site was discovered with the remains of seven individuals being recovered. DNA testing later revealed one of the remains to be Private Sergeant First Class Baxter. /ppAt the time of his death, Louis was survived by his mother, Catharine; two brothers, John and Michael Baxter and a sister Marion Santimaw, they have all since passed away./ppHe is most recently survived by his youngest brother, Carlton and wife Kathleen Baxter of Florida and many nieces and nephews./ppArrangements are under the care and direction of the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena./p
