pJoseph D. Johnson, 80, a native son of Tennessee, passed away Friday, December 2, 2016 in Gouverneur./ppCalling hours are on Tuesday, December 6th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur, and there are no funeral services./ppJoseph was born in Silver Point, TN on September 23, 1936, the son of William and Fannie May Johnson./ppHe attended school in Tennessee until joining the United States Navy at a young age and serving until he received a full military retirement due to medical reasons. Among his navy adventures was touring on the USS Ticonderoga as the first aircraft carrier to navigate the waters of the Hudson River./pp Joe, always self-employed, continued working in the tree business well into his 60’s either logging or operating Johnson Tree Service. /pp As an outdoorsman, he enjoyed trout fishing, hunting, hiking, logging, and known for swimming long distances with one lung, due to TB which he contracted in the service. Joe was also known for telling jokes and epic stories, listening to bluegrass music, and picking a banjo. He excelled at bowling, having bowled 19 strikes in a row and no one could remember the last time he was beaten at checkers. Joe was a lifelong die-hard New York Giants football fan. Most of all, he remained a southern boy at heart even though he split his time between the South and the North Country. Famous quote “I spent 25 years in the North Country before realizing “DamYankee” was actually two words”./ppJoe is survived by his children Molly, Joe, Brian, and Wade along with three special grandchildren Emily, Daniel, and Samuel. He is predeceased by his parents and he is the last of eight children./ppMemorial donations in Joe’s memory may be made to Friends 4 Pound Paws, PO Box 394, Gouverneur, NY 13642./p
