pGouverneur - Mary Janice “Jan” Burt, 85, passed away Sunday, February 21, 2016 at her home under the care of her family and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley./ppA funeral mass will be held Thursday, February 25th at 11:00 am at St. James Catholic Church in Gouverneur with Fr. Stephen Rocker officiating and spring burial in Old St. James Cemetery, Gouverneur. Calling hours are Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur./ppJan was born October 8, 1930, the daughter of Lockland and Lettie O’Driscol Malterner./ppShe graduated from Canton High School and attended St. Lawrence University. Later in life, Jan received certification as a licensed practical nurse./ppJan worked for New York State Public Health as a home healthcare provider, served as a secretary, and ran a liquor store in Lowville where she and her family lived. After living many years in Lowville, the family moved to Oxbow in 1973 and eventually to Gouverneur./ppShe married Kenneth J. “Jim” Burt on July 11, 1953 at St. Mary’s Church in Canton./ppMr. Burt, a retired banker, passed away April 9, 1989./ppJan enjoyed sewing, reading, was a very giving person, and was very devout in her faith. As a communicant of St. James Catholic Church, she received the Caritas Award from the diocese and spent many hours serving the Outreach Center and St. Vincent de Paul./ppJan is survived by her sons and their families Ronald and Elaine Burt of Gouverneur, Jeffrey Burt of Gouverneur, David and Elizabeth Burt of Pamelia, K. James “Jim” Burt of Minnesota, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband, her parents, a son Bruce Edick, and a daughter-in-law Denise Finley./ppMemorial donations in Jan’s memory may be made to St. James Catholic Church, 164 E.
