CORTLAND, NY and CARTHAGE, NY ~ Jeane V. Widrick, 93, of Homer, formerly of NYS Rt. 3, Carthage, died peacefully on Sunday, January 29, 2017, at Cortland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Cortland, NY where she had resided since December 24, 2012.
Jeane was born September 11, 1923 in the Town of Watson, NY, the second daughter of John K. and Barbara E. Virkler, and graduated from Lowville Free Academy with the Class of 1939.
On November 25, 1943, in Lowville, NY, she married Boyce S. Widrick. Mr. Widrick died on April 22, 2013.
Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Widrick assisted her aunt, Minnie Virkler, in her hairdressing business in Beaver Falls. Following her marriage, she and her husband owned and operated the Rev. Andrew E. Virkler Farm on Rt. 812 in New Bremen for many years. After moving off their farm in 1973, they resided in Naumburg, NY, then Herrings, NY, before moving to Homer in 2011.
Jeane was a devoted mother, attending her children’s sporting events, plays, concerts, and was active as an elementary school room mother and as an assistant with the Girl and Boy Scouts. She was an active volunteer for the American Red Cross. In 1994, she was awarded the David C. Knowlton Blood Program Outstanding Achievement Award by the Black River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross for her many years of volunteer work in the blood services program. She enjoyed gardening and was especially fond of her asparagus. She loved to bake, making numerous types of Christmas cookies for family and friends each year. She will be remembered for always being very physically active, taking a long walk almost every day well into her 80’s.
Surviving are her children, Jeffrey J. Widrick and wife Shannon Knuth, of Arlington, MA, and Bethany J. and husband Timothy Herman, of Truxton, NY; four Grandchildren, Eric Widrick, Lauren Widrick, Sean Herman and Benjamin Herman, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her loving husband of almost 70 years, she was predeceased by her sister, Charlotte Virkler, and her brother, Ralph Virkler.
Mrs. Widrick’s funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at Scanlon Funeral Home, 9791 Main St., Croghan, with Duane Farney and Floyd Graves, both with the Ministry of the Apostolic Christian Church in Croghan, officiating. Spring burial will be in the Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery, Croghan.
