LOWVILLE - John C. Hirschey, 73, died Thursday, February 9, 2017 at his home.
John was born on June 12, 1943 in Lowville the son of the late Leland A. and Bernice S. (Farney) Hirschey. He graduated from Lowville Academy and Central School in 1961 and Jefferson Community College; he continued his education and graduated with a bachelor’s in accounting from Rochester Institute of Technology. He married Molly A. Grandjean on October 2, 1965 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Robert Stover, officiating. The couple made their home in Lowville. John was a well known CPA in Lowville for over 40 years where he established, The Accounting Firm of Hirschey and Associates. Molly died on Saturday, January 13, 2001.
He is survived by his children, Erik S. and Pamela J. Hirschey of Glenfield; Heidi L. Hirschey of Morristown, NJ; his sisters, LuWenda M. Mohrman; Sara A. (Scott) King; Martha J. Cuilla; Rebecca J. Hirschey; Kristina M. Panowicz; and Laura L. (Samuel) Villanti; his brothers, Ronald L.; Bruce E. (Gayle); Michael L. (Judy); Martin A. (Linda); Randall L. (Shirley); Loren D.; Norman J. (Vikki); and Daniel J. Hirschey, his mother-in-law, Shirley J. Grandjean; his in-laws; Reginald (Kathy) Grandjean; Rosie (Michael) Souva; Diane (Robert) Purvines and Richard Campbell; several nieces and nephews.
John is predeceased by his sister, Diane Bernice; his father-in-law, Lester Grandjean; a brother-in-law, Timothy J. Panowicz; sisters-in-law, Cynthia G. Campbell; Rita S. and her husband Harry F. Ortlieb.
He loved history, classic boats, and old cars and was a member of Northern Cruisers of Lowville. He was in the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce and was businessman of the year in 2000. He served on numerous boards including: Oswegatchie FFA Camp, Brookside Senior Living Community, Ives Hill Retirement Community, and Lewis County Hospital Foundation. He was a past member of the Lowville Kiwanis. He supported fundraisers for Lowville Academy and Central School, FFA Camp Oswegatchie, the Lowville Fire Department and Marine Corps Toys for Tots.
John loved spending time with Molly and his children at their camp on Soft Maple and spending time with his family at numerous gatherings. He enjoyed woodworking, working on anything with an engine, and generally getting his hands dirty.
Mr. Hirschey served in the U.S. Army stateside during Vietnam and was honorably discharged.
His funeral service will be on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Lowville Mennonite Church with Rev. Evan Zehr officiating. Spring burial will be in Martinsburg Cemetery.
Family and friends may call at the church on Monday, February 13th, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9:00P.M.
