Joseph (Joe) George Sevick, 92, of Winthrop, New York and York, Maine passed away at his NY home on Sunday, February 12, 2017. Joe made his year-round residence in the North Country in July of 2013.
Joe was born in Yonkers, NY on his parent’s (Flora and Joseph) wedding anniversary, October 15, 1924. He graduated from Yonkers High School in 1942, and attended Syracuse University to study forestry. During his first semester of freshman year he decided to enlist in the Army. He saw this as his duty, and served in World War II as a Sergeant in the 290th Infantry Regiment, Army of the United States. He was awarded the Purple Heart post the Battle of the Bulge which was the last major German offensive campaign of World War II.
On August 11, 1946, he married his love, Harriet Beatrice Hamilton. She died on December 26, 2008. Joe is survived by two sons, Bruce Hamilton Sevick and Joel Sevick; his two daughter-in- laws Joanne Sevick and Marilyn Sevick; three grandchildren Samuel Blaise Sevick, Michael Anne Sevick, and Gregory Joel Sevick; a great grand-daughter Josephine Alice Sevick, and Samuel Sevick’s fiancé, Lillian Alice Phippen.
Joe took advantage of the G.I. Bill and returned to college where he received a B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Missouri School of Mines (MSM), an advanced degree of Metallurgical Engineer from the University of Missouri Rolla (UMR), and a management degree from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Joe retired in 1983 as senior vice president of the St. Joe Minerals Corp. of Clayton, Missouri, which he joined as a research engineer in 1949. He served in various capacities at the Josephtown, PA., smelter before his administrative assignment to the NYC headquarters staff in 1961.
He was active in several civic and professional groups, serving as Director and Vice Chairman of the International Lead Zinc Research Organization. He was also a member of UMR’s Order of the Golden Shillelagh. In retirement, he donated his expertise to the York County Audubon Society in Maine, Strawberry Banke of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and York Hospital. Joe was an avid card player. Loved playing tennis, golf, and spending time with his family, and two cats; Pinky and Fuzzy.
