HANNAWA FALLS – Mr. Lawrence Martin Scanlon, 85, peacefully passed away Saturday morning, February 11, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Home in Ogdensburg, where he had been a resident for the past 3 years.

Larry was born May 16, 1931 in Potsdam, the son of the late Francis S. and Keitha Hart Scanlon. He attended Potsdam schools, where he graduated High School in 1949. After graduating from high school, he entered the US Air Force, proudly serving his country until his honorable discharge in 1955. On July 23, 1955, he married Marilyn R. Stone in Potsdam. She predeceased him on February 11, 2014.

After returning home from the military, he joined his father in the family business, Scanlon’s Auto Parts, continuing until his retirement in 1993. Larry also was committed to his community, serving as the Town of Pierrepont Supervisor for two terms and was a volunteer for Potsdam Rescue Squad in its infancy. He was an avid sportsman and was a longtime member of the St. Regis Hunting and Fishing Club. Larry also was a member of the Potsdam Country Club and the Potsdam Elks Lodge.

Larry is survived by his daughters, Laurie L. Scanlon of Key Largo, Florida and Tawnee M. Searles of Potsdam; his grandsons, Martin Waack of Key Largo and Colin Searles of Austin, Texas; and his granddaughters, Amanda (Waack) Kempf of Ithaca, Carlee Waack of Key Largo, and Shannon and Breanna Searles of Potsdam.

In addition to his wife and his parents, Larry was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Scanlon.

Friends may call Tuesday 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, 12 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Stephen Rocker, celebrating. Burial with military honors will be held in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Potsdam.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St. Joseph’s Home or the Alzheimer’s Association.
