Frederick F. Adderley, age 93, of Watertown, passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the Hospice Residence of Jefferson County with his wife Suzanne and family by his side.
Fred was born in Antwerp, NY on April 9, 1923, son of William F. Adderley and Bertha Mae Lawton Adderley.
Fred enlisted in the U. S. Army in December of 1944 and served as a Staff Sergeant during WWII and was stationed in Japan and the Philippines and honorably discharged in the Fall of 1946. Prior to going overseas Fred joined the American Legion Post 61 - Watertown and has been a member for 72 years and a past member of the VFW Post 1400 - Watertown.
Upon returning home from overseas Fred leased a Sunoco gas station in Philadelphia, NY and ran a taxi service called Quaker Cab. He moved to Watertown and purchased a Gulf gas station on Washington Street beside the Watertown High School. In 1950 he went to work for Quick Motors Cadillac and Oldsmobile dealership for 23 years as a salesman and then as sales manager. Fred was a member of the Watertown Chamber of Commerce and during this time he purchased and resold rental properties in the Watertown area. He then opened two locations of Adderley Auto Sales on Leray Street, Watertown.
Fred played drums in high school and at one time he had his own band called “Fred Adderley and the Blue Notes.” He was a member of the Musicians Union and continued playing in various bands around the Watertown and Thousand Islands region. Most recently he enjoyed playing his drums at home and spending time with his family and friends.
Fred is predeceased by three sisters Elizabeth (Betty) Reeves Fox, Sarah (Sally) Patton Daigneau and Margaret DeJourdan.
Fred married Gladys Edathy Keen in 1944, the couple had eight children and the marriage ended in divorce. Fred is predeceased by a son, Charles Frederick. He is survived by his children Constance and Marc Davis - Burrville, Patricia MacRae - Arizona, Thomas and Eileen - Cape Vincent, J. Timothy and Karen - Watertown, John and Patricia - Alabama, Richard and Nancy - Watertown, and William and Julie - Watertown.
Fred married Suzanne Freeman Farney on November 5, 1970 at the First Presbyterian Church, Watertown and celebrated 47 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne, and two step children, Robert and Kira Farney - Florida and Michelle Snyder - Dexter.
Fred is survived by 11 grandchildren Christopher Adderley - Burrville, Richard MacRae - Arizona, Michael MacRae - Arizona, Joanne King - Watertown, Jim Adderley - Sackets Harbor, Janice Adderley - Potsdam, Michael Adderley - Watertown, Allison Adderley - NY City, Sean Adderley - Mexico, Janelle Schroy - South Africa, Nicole Adderley - Watertown, and a step-grandson Tyler Snyder - Dexter, as well as 16 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
The funeral will be 11 am Friday, March 24th at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. Burial will be later in the spring at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Antwerp. Calling hours are Thursday, March 23rd from 4 pm – 7 pm at the funeral home.
