Jay A. Walter

Jay A. Walter, age 78 of Sackets Harbor, passed away Monday morning at Hospice at Ellis Farm.

Jay was born October 3, 1938 in Buffalo, the son of Julius and Mildred Austin Walter. He graduated from Kensington High School and Paul Smiths’ College.

Jay was an Eagle Scout and received a certificate in 1953 for saving a life.

Jay entered the US Army in 1960 and served until 1963 when he went into the Army Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1966.

Jay married Cora Gonyea on November 26, 1960 at Ft. Dix, N.J. Jay worked for Niagara Mohawk as Shift Supervisor in Saranac Lake, Potsdam and retired from Watertown in 1994 after 35 years.

He was a member of Colton Fire Dept. and Treasurer and late Sackets Harbor Fire Dept. and Treasurer. He was a member of Jefferson County Rock and Mineral Club and was an avid coin and stamp collector and enjoyed fishing. He also was a Boy Scout Leader for many years.

Jay is survived by his wife Cora; three children: Michael and Alicia Walter of Nicholville, NY, Albert Walter of Hammond, NY and Barbara and Tom Pishock of Fredericksburg, VA. Three grandchildren: Ty Walter of Medina, Ohio, Tommy Pishock of Fredericksburg, VA and Andrew Walter of Colton, NY; three step grandchildren, three great granddaughters, a brother Roy Walter of West Seneca, NY and a sister Joy (Al) Campisano of Albany, NY and nieces and nephews also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. There are no calling hours or funeral. Donations may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County 1398 Gotham St. Watertown, NY 13685 or the Sackets Harbor Fire Dept. Online condolences may be made to dexterfuneralhome.com.
