Joseph W. Queior, recently of Sarasota, Florida, died on Saturday, April 22. Born on March 8, 1924 in Watertown, NY, he was the son of John and Matilda Touranjeau Queior. After graduating from Watertown High School in January, 1943, he joined the navy and served aboard the destroyer USS Aaron Ward in the Pacific. On August 18, 1945 he married Dora Jean Miller of Watertown in Holy Family Church with the Rev. Paul Brunet officiating. Following WWII, Joseph received degrees from St. Lawrence and Cornell Universities and taught physics and chemistry for 32 years at New Hartford High School where he was chairman of the science department. He was a life member of the National Science Teachers Association, and a Fellow and former president of the New York State Science Teachers Association. After retiring, he and his wife moved first to Chaumont Bay, NY, then to Brunswick, ME. His wife died in 2012 and he moved to Sarasota in 2013.
Over the years Joseph attended many reunions of the USS Aaron Ward crew. Other activities included teaching in the gifted science students program at Colgate University, leadership roles in Boy Scouts and 4-H programs, and membership in the American Legion. His interests included piloting small planes, photography, opera, reading and gardening.
He is survived by three sons and their wives: David J and Linda H Queior of Youngsville, NC, Daniel P and Rev. Margaret M Queior of Montville, ME, and Stephen M. Queior and Katie Bontrager of Sarasota, FL; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two nieces.
There are no calling hours. A funeral mass will be held at a later date at St. Patricks in Watertown, NY, with interment of ashes in Glenwood Cemetery.
