Deferiet- Michael J. Miterko, 90, of 55 Anderson Ave, died Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at Carthage Area Hospital after suffering a stroke the day before.

Mike was born September 2, 1926 in Deferiet, the son of the late Andrew and Anna (Szedlak) Miterko. He served in the Army during World War II receiving the rank of Sergeant. He married the former Dorine L. Grosse on September 15, 1951 at St. Rita’s Church in Deferiet. Mike worked as a welder for the St. Regis Paper Company and retired after 46 years of service in 1988.

He was a charter member and former Chief of the Deferiet Vol. Fire Dept, former Trustee of the Village of Deferiet and was a member of the American Legion Post # 789 in Carthage. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife: Dorine L. Miterko of Deferiet, one daughter and her husband: Mrs. Daniel (Diane M.) Warner of Carthage, one son and his wife: Gary M. and Cindy Miterko of Webster, 5 Grandchildren, 1 Great Granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his 5 brothers, John, Frank, Paul, Andrew and George Miterko and 4 sisters, Agnes and Mary Miterko, Margaret Williams and Anne Laribee.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 5th at 3:00pm at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home with the Rev. Christopher Looby officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Black River Cemetery. Calling hours will precede the funeral service from 1-3pm Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Deferiet Vol. Fire Dept. or to the Carthage Area Rescue Squad.
