Teresa M. Garlock, of Watertown, NY, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2017 in the presence of her two daughters.
Mrs. Garlock was born in Alexandria Bay, NY, daughter of Captain Jack and Theresa Wallace-Francis MacGregor. She graduated from Alexandria Bay High School and Watertown School of Commerce. She attended Jefferson Community College, including numerous writing workshops.
Mrs. Garlock was employed by the New York Telephone Company, Watertown for several years. She was a writer and had many poems, short stories and essays published in various periodicals. Much of her writing centered on the St. Lawrence River and life in Alexandria Bay, NY during the Great Depression. Also among her publications was a volume on wildflowers with pen and ink illustrations by her late husband, Leo. Mrs. Garlock authored a children’s book based on President U.S. Grant’s visit to Pullman Island in 1872.
Mrs. Garlock was interested in local history and had interviewed and recorded several older North Country residents. She also did extensive research on her paternal genealogy, MacGregor and was privileged to meet some of her relatives who had been previously unknown to her.
She was a Charter member of the Black River Valley Writers Club, a former board member of Watertown Christian Women’s Club (Watertown Women’s Connection), life member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and a Sunday School teacher of many years at the Life Church of the Nazarene. Mrs. Garlock was an avid student of the Bible and studied it for many years.
Mrs. Garlock is survived by two daughters, Mary F. Garlock-Wiberg (Hugo III) of N. Reading, MA, Sarah Tink (Rev. R. Wesley), of Ewing, N.J., a grandson, Hugo Wiberg, IV, of N. Reading, MA, a brother, Dale MacGregor, Pensacola, FL, several nieces and nephews. Her husband, G. Leo Garlock predeceased her in June 1994, as well as three sisters, Idamae Waters, Marian Estes and Diane Phillips and a brother, Jack MacGregor.
Arrangements are with Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, N.Y. Private Burial will be in Barnes Settlement cemetery.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at The Life Church of the Nazarene, 535 Thompson Blvd., Watertown, NY with the Reverend Robert Tharp officiating assisted by Reverend Walter MacPherson. An hour of Visitation with family from 3-4 pm will be followed by the memorial service that will begin at 4:00 pm and a reception following services.
