Viola F. Mowers

Viola F. Mowers, 102, formerly of Philadelphia, NY, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown, NY.

Born on December 15, 1914 in Roebuck, Ontario, Canada, she was a daughter of Elmer and Ethel Barton Buker and graduated from Philadelphia High School in 1934.

She married William M. Mowers on March 28, 1936 at the Theresa Methodist Parsonage with Rev. RU Grant, officiating. Mr. Mowers passed away January 26, 1998.

Mrs. Mowers was a telephone operator for several years at the local telephone office until the office went to dial, worked at J.J. Newberry, Watertown and the Indian River Central School cafeteria until retiring in June 1974. She also worked at the nutrition center in Philadelphia for the Jefferson County Office of the Aged from 1977 to 1991 retiring due to Mr. Mowers’ illness.

She was a member of the Philadelphia Rebekah Lodge #584 to which she was Past Noble Grand and Past District Deputy, Philadelphia United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Woman’s Society, Indian River Senior Citizens and the Senior citizens of Jefferson County, Watertown, NY.

Mrs. Mowers enjoyed summers at their camp in Clayton, NY. Her favorite past times were crossword puzzles, reading, playing cards, shopping, and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include three grandchildren, Jeffrey John Meeks, Albany, NY, Susan Andrea Farr and husband, Curtis, Watertown, NY and Julie Ann Ward, Watertown, NY; four great-granddaughters, Andrea N. McGrath, Allison M. McGrath, Chloe M. Ward and Julya J. Ward.

Her husband, her only daughter, Martha Meeks and two brothers, Arnold and Ernest Buker died before her.

Funeral Services will be 2 pm Monday, June 5, 2017 at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, NY with Rev. Milton LaSalle, officiating. Burial will be at Sandy Hollow Cemetery, Philadelphia, NY, immediately following services.

Calling hours will be 12 – 2 pm prior to the service.
