pCarl Frederick Jumps, age 91, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2016. Carl was born in 1924 in Watertown, NY, and grew up in the Village of Dexter in upstate NY. He graduated from Dexter High School where he played basketball and was Class President. He attended the State University of New York College of Technology, Canton, NY, from 1942-43 and was Class President and a member of the Theta Nu Fraternity. In March, 1943, he joined the war effort, along with many of his classmates, having to defer his studies./ppA veteran of World War II, Carl proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946 with the 14th Infantry Regiment, 71st Infantry Division and was a Staff Sergeant in the European Theater. The 71st was assigned to General Patton’s 3rd Army. As part of the push to capture Berlin, the 71st was credited with eliminating one of the last remaining German Divisions, the elite 6th SS Mountain Division (Nord) in fierce fighting during Easter week, 1945. They also liberated several German concentration camps and penetrated the farthest east of any American unit, linking up with the Soviet Army during the final days of the war./ppAfter the war, Carl attended Mohawk College, Utica, NY, from 1946-48, where he met and married his beloved wife, Merilyn, in 1947. He transferred to Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY, where he was elected to Engineering Honor Societies Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu. After obtaining a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1950, he began work as an Electrical Engineer with Delaware Power and Light Company in Wilmington, DE, rising to the position of Supervisor of System Planning before retiring in 1983./ppCarl was a Mason of Dexter Lodge No. 1072 F. & A. M. He was involved in numerous volunteer activities throughout his life including Board Member and various positions with the Chatham Civic Association; Committee Chair for Troop 66 Boy Scouts of America; Past Chairman for DE Bay Section, The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE); Past Chairman for Power/Industry & General Applications Joint Group Chapter, IEEE; Past Secretary, Philadelphia Section, Clarkson Alumni Association; Member, Civic Affairs Committee, DE Council of Engineering Societies; Member, Light Masters Square Club; and Meals on Wheels. He was a member and usher at Concord Presbyterian Church./ppCarl cherished time with his family and enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling, and vacations at Guffin Bay on Lake Ontario. Spending time there with his brother and family members, visiting old friends, boating, bass fishing, and swimming were favorite activities. /ppCarl is predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Lucile (Youngs) Jumps and his brother, Richard M. Jumps. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Merilyn; two children, Douglas Jumps (Cheryl) of Wilmington, DE, and Connie Hughes (Ray) of Richmond, VA; four grandchildren, Steven and Michael Jumps of Wilmington, DE, and Brett and Blake Hughes of Richmond, VA, and three step-grandchildren, Shari, Logan and Marissa Barker of Wilmington, DE./ppA visitation will be held on Sunday, March 20, from 6-7 pm at McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803 followed by a memorial service at 7 pm./ppIn lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, Polly Drummond Shopping Center, Newark, DE 19711./ppFor online condolences visit www.mccreryandharra.com./p
