Harold Ryan

Waddington: Harold D. Ryan, 89, of Waddington, NY passed away Friday August 18, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Ogdensburg. Friends and family may attend calling hours from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday August 23, 2017 at Phillips Memorial Home in Waddington. A Mass of Resurrection will be held 1:00 P.M. on Thursday August 34, 2017 at St. Mary’s Church, Waddington with Rev. Doug Lucia presiding. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Waddington. One of twelve children, Harold Dennis Ryan was born June 16, 1928 in Norfolk the son of Floyd and Marion (Gooshaw) Ryan. Harold, known as Dick or Porky to his friends, attended Norfolk High School and later served in the Navy during WWII. Following his honorable discharge, Harold worked for several companies including Alcoa, the St. Regis Paper Company and the New York State Power Authority from which he retired after 33 years. Harold met his wife, Mary Waite Sweet, on a blind date set up by friends Bob and Doodie Oshier Frazier. Harold and Mary were married on November 26, 1949 at St. Mary’s Church in Waddington with Rev. Edward Pierce presiding. Harold (Dick) and Mary were married 65 years. Mary predeceased him in 2015. She was the love of his life.

Harold had many interests. He was an avid gardener, builder, reader and storyteller. He was quite proud of the fact that he had earned his GED and was awarded a high school diploma from Norfolk High School. He served in the Knights of Columbus as well as the American Legion Post #420. He is survived by six children, Ann and Jeff Harris of Cape Cod, MA; Barbara and Peter Clickner of Ball Ground, GA; Elizabeth and Daniel Salvagno of Syracuse, NY; Richard Ryan and Thomas Ryan both of Waddington, Robert and Trudy Ryan of Waddington; 13 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Lillian Casler of East Syracuse, NY, Claudia and Andy Barber, Shirley Ryan, and William Ryan all of Norfolk, NY, and Maude and Lloyd Simon of Fort Edward, NY as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter Margaret (Peggy), three sisters Pauline Murray, Mary Eurto, Nellie Dumas Beaulieu and three brothers, Harry “Dusty,” Paul and Francis. The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Joseph’s nursing home for all their care and kindness.
