CROGHAN, NY ~ Dolores “Laurie” Ann Monnat, 84, of Convent St., Croghan, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, in the comfort of the Hospice Room at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville.
Born on August 27, 1933, in the Town of New Bremen, NY, she was a daughter of Eugene and Margaret (LaBombard) Hirsch. She received her education at Fr. Leo Memorial School in Croghan, from where she graduated with the class of 1951, and then attended the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Watertown from where she graduated in 1954 with an RN degree. Following nursing school, Laurie became a Registered Nurse at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville until 1957.
She married Gilbert J. Monnat on June 2, 1956 in St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan.
In 1978, she began work as a Family Service Worker for Lewis County Headstart until 1980, when she became a Caseworker for the Lewis County Department of Social Services, from where she worked until retiring in 1995.
Laurie was a lifelong communicant of St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, and was a volunteer at Croghan Free Library for many years.
She will be remembered always as the loving wife and mother she was to her large family, and as the wonderful friend she was to so many throughout the community. Throughout the years, she enjoyed knitting, was an avid reader, and particularly enjoyed any time spent with her grandchildren.
Surviving are her loving husband, Gilbert, of almost 62 years; her six children, William E. Monnat, Stephen G. (Jane) Monnat, Peter J. (Melody) Monnat, Gilbert J.(Gretchen) Monnat II, Susan E. (Brad) Gydesen, and Nancy C. (Rod) Widrick, all of Croghan; 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; a brother, David (Emily) Hirsch, of Adams Center, her sister, Cheryl E. Steiner, of Clinton, sister-in-law, Conne Hirsch of Lowville and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, Anthony J. “Tony” Monnat, who died in March, 1977 and a brother John Hirsch.
Laurie’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 11:00 am. at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Donald J. Manfred, Pastor, officiating. Spring burial will be in St. Stephen’s Cemetery, Croghan.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 5, 2018, from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm and 6:00pm till 8:00 pm at the Scanlon Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Stephen’s Church Restoration Fund, Croghan, or to the Croghan Volunteer Fire Department.
