Robert L. “Bob” Northrop

pRobert L. “Bob” Northrop, 77, of Winthrop, NY passed away peacefully on April 3, 2016 at Ryan House Hospice in Phoenix, Arizona with his wife, Sue , family, and close friends at his side. Bob and Sue were visiting family and friends on one of their many adventures together. /ppA service for Bob will be held at the Gunnison Chapel on the St. Lawrence University campus on August 27, 2016 at 1:00 pm with a reception to follow. /ppBorn in Geneva, NY July 12th, 1938, Bob was the son of the late Homer and Ruth Northrop. He is predeceased by his older brother, John Northrop. Bob graduated from Geneva High School in 1956 and joined in the United States Navy after graduating from Colgate University in 1960. He served as a lieutenant aboard a Destroyer Escort, The USS McMorris, flew Navy jets, and taught at the sonar school in Key West, Florida. /ppBob moved to the North Country in 1974 after working at Cornell University in Financial Aid and became Head Men’s and Women’s swimming coach at St. Lawrence University in 1977 after first serving as the university’s Director of Financial Aid. He developed a strong collegiate program which included over 40 All-America finishes and 16 relay All-America finishes during his tenure. He coached the 1979-80 team to the first Upper New York State Swim Association Championship in program history and led the 1980 and 1982 men’s teams to third-place finishes in the NCAA Division III Championships. Bob was the 1999 UCAA Men’s Swim Coach of the Year. Bob retired from coaching in 2000 and was inducted into the SLU Hall of Fame in 2010. /ppBob is survived by his wife of 31 years, Susan Northrop as well as four sons; Andrew Northrop and his wife Clara Tang of San Francisco, son Tim and his wife Karen Northrop of Glens Falls, step-son Kurt Gantert and wife Gabrielle Toledano of San Francisco, step-son Jed Gantert of Prescott, AZ. He leaves three brothers; Tom Northrop and his wife Janet of Arizona, Richard Northrop of Geneva, NY, Jim Northrop and his wife Linda of Pittsburgh, one sister; Betsy Northrop Butler of Canadagua, as well as, six grandchildren; Ted, Nick, Conor, Morrison, Ben and Amelie and several nieces and nephews. /ppBob was an outdoor enthusiast and adventurer who shared his love of the outdoors with his family, friends, and the young people he coached. Adventures ranged from ice out canoe trips down the Raquette River, rowing down the Colorado River, to trekking the French Alps. His experiences and adventures led him to be passionate about the protection of wild lands for future generations. Donations may be made to Earth Justice, The National Resource Defense Council, Adirondack Mountain Club, or the Wilderness Society. /p
