Richard G. “Butch” Coseo

pThe funeral mass for Richard G. “Butch” Coseo will be 11:00am Friday, April 29th at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Sackets Harbor, with Rev. Douglas Comstock and Rev. Leo Wiley concelebrating. Burial will follow in St. Peter & Paul’s Cemetery, New Boston immediately following the service. Calling hours will be Thursday, April 28th from 5:00-9:00pm at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, 632 State St. Watertown./ppButch died Monday, April 25th in the Emergency Room of Samaritan Medical Center. He was 59 years old./ppBorn in Malone October 22, 1956, Butch was a son to Richard H. and Ernestine H. (Hubbard) Coseo. He was educated locally, and graduated from Copenhagen Central School and Lewis County BOCES in 1975. Following graduation, Butch worked as a bus mechanic for Copenhagen Central Schools from 1975-1979. From 1979 until 1981 he was employed as a mechanic at Ennis Farm Equipment and International Harvester Silos./pp In February of 1981 he entered the New York State Corrections Academy, serving first at Green Haven, then Auburn Correctional Facility. He was transferred to Watertown in 1982 as one of 12 original correctional guards to safeguard the grounds of what was to become the Watertown Correctional Facility. In 1984, he was presented the New York State Department of Corrections Medal of Honor, along with the Northern Federation of Law Enforcement Officers Silver Star Award, for his actions in putting out a fire in a construction area at the prison. Butch continued to serve at the Watertown Correctional Facility in the position of Range Instructor and Weapons Officer until his retirement in August 2004./ppIn January of 1986, Butch entered the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Academy. He then returned home to the Corrections Service following his graduation./ppHe joined the Sackets Harbor Police Department as Patrolman in 1985. In 1995 Butch was appointed Chief / Officer-in-charge, a position he held until the time of his death./ppHe is survived by his wife, Janice; his son and fiancée: Edmond J. Coseo and Kaci Joels of Brownville; a daughter, Lindsay N. Gallo and grandson Gabriel M. Gallo of Sackets Harbor. Also surviving are his siblings, Michael J. and LaVerne Coseo, Spirit Lake, Idaho; Joseph P. and Jenny Coseo of Adams; Mary L. and Timothy Baker of Wilton,NY; Theresa M. and Stewart Patchen of Tylerville; his step brother Kenneth Thompson, Harrisville. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. /ppBesides his parents, Butch is predeceased by a sister Cathy A.
