pAKWESASNE- Wilfred W. “SONKAWEKANHONSTA” Bova, 78, of 1075 Island Road, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, April 26, 2016 at the Ottawa Heart Institute./ppWilfred was born June 21, 1937 in Akwesasne, Ontario, son of the late James and Julia Boots Bova. He attended Cornwall Island East End School and then Cornwall Island West End, and St. Lawrence High School. He married Mary B. Leaf on January 5, 1963 in St. Regis, Quebec. She predeceased him on January 18, 2007./ppWilfred was an Ironworker, Local #60, Syracuse, and when he was younger he worked various jobs with Seaway in Cornwall and did an apprenticeship as a carpenter’s helper. He was a communicant of the St. Regis Catholic Church and enjoyed watching sports, especially lacrosse and was an avid NHL fan./ppHe is survived by his children, Terri Bova of Akwesasne; Wesley Bova and his fiancé Ashima Mehra of Thunder Bay, ON; and Taylor James and Patti Bova of Akwesasne, ON; and his grandchildren, Cheyenne, Ciara, Karonhiakwas, Ranerahtenhtha, Chase, and Isla; his sister, Hilda Smoke of Akwesasne, and many nieces and nephews./ppWilfred was predeceased by his daughter, Valerie Marie Bova on September 24, 1983; a grandson, David John Lacey II; a sister, Nancy Chaussi on April 10, 2009; and two brothers, Arthur Bova on September 4, 2013, and Percy Francis on July 29, 2012./ppFriends may call at the family home beginning Saturday at 2:00 PM until 8:30 AM Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Regis Catholic Church at 10:00 AM with Rev. Jerome Pastores celebrating.
