Leila J. Howell

Leila J. Howell, age 85, resident of Three Mile Bay, passed away Tuesday, January 31, at Samaritan Keep Nursing Home in Watertown. Leila resided in Three Mile Bay for the last 19 years, and had previously resided in Phoenix for 12 years, and Mexico for 27. Leila was born May 10, 1931 in Buffalo, the daughter of Arthur and Virginia Cote Shephard. She attended Altmar- Parish- Williamstown Schools. Leila married Robert Howell on February 23, 1952, and he passed away October 31, 2014.

Surviving are his three sons Timothy and his wife Terry Howell of Mexico, Glenn and his wife Natalie Howell of Boylston and Dale and his wife Tammy Howell of Fulton and daughter Brenda and her husband Steven Doben of Harvard, MA. She is also survived by her grandchildren Ken Howell, Josh Howell, Gabrielle Doben, Patrick Howell, Parker Howell and Sarah Doben and great grandchildren Dylan and Rayvin Howell.

Leila (also known as Janet) was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She cherished her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She enjoyed the outdoors by boating, cross-country skiing and taking long walks with her husband.

A Memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, February 11, at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski with a spring burial at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service.

Mark J. Mittiga

Massena: Mark J. Mittiga, age 52, of Northview Drive, passed away early Tuesday morning (Feb. 7, 2017) at his home. Friends and family may call at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena Saturday morning (Feb. 11, 2016) from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the funeral services at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Tojo Chacko presiding. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Mark was born in Massena to the late Ross and Margaret (DeMarco) on February 18, 1964. He was a 1982 Massena Central graduate, later attending Canton A.T.C, graduating with an Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts.

Mark began his carrier working at his uncle’s restaurant, Tony’s Pizzeria on Main Street while he was in high school and through college. Mark married the love of his life Linda Brown on October 8, 1994 at St. Mary’s Church in Massena with Rev. Jerry Bleaux presiding. He later purchased Tiffany’s restaurant, also on Main Street, and later established his own Pizzeria, Rosario’s Deli. Mark ran the restaurant and pizzeria until his retirement.

Mark is survived by his sister Jo Marie and Henry Wilczek of Utica, NY, and Frank (Dorinda) of Congers, NY, Anthony (Maureen) of Utica, NY, and Ross (Inez) Mittiga of Daytona, FL. Mark is also survived by his uncle Gus and Janet DeMarco of South Carolina along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins. Mark was predeceased by a brother Dominic Mittiga in 1989. He loved restoring classic automobiles and attending local car shows along with traveling to the Nationals in Syracuse and Carlisle in Pennsylvania. Mark was an avid NASCAR fan.

Eugene M. Snyder

HANNAWA FALLS – Mr. Eugene Mark Snyder, 90, of 31 Church Street, passed away early Wednesday morning, February 8, 2017 at the St. Regis Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since October 2015.

Eugene was born October 3, 1926 in Hannawa Falls, the son of the late Francis Mark “Tim” and Lillian Knight Snyder and attended schools in Hannawa Falls. Eugene proudly served his country in the US Navy on the USS Lexington during WW II. On October 17, 1950, he married Shirley Stone in Canton.

Eugene worked at Niagara Mohawk in Potsdam for many years, retiring as a line foreman. He was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, VFW and American Legion.

Eugene is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; his son, Andy of Hannawa Falls; his grandchildren, Zachary Mark Snyder, John Dean Snyder, and Mia Dawson Snyder; many nieces and nephews, including Robert Huckle.

In addition to his parents, Eugene was predeceased by a son, Lance Snyder on December 25, 1980; his brother, Frank Snyder; and his sisters, Beverly Huckle and Betty Lucien.

A celebration of his life will be held Monday 4-6 PM at the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam. Burial will be held at a later date in Pleasant Mound Cemetery, Colton.

Margaret N. Jones

The funeral mass for Margaret N. Jones will be 1:30pm Saturday, February 11th at Holy Family Church, Father Leo Wiley officiating. Burial will be held in the spring in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will precede the mass at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home from 11:00am – 1:00pm.

Margaret passed away Wednesday, February 8th at the Samaritan Medical Center. She was 90 years old.

Born in Fredrick, MD January 1, 1927, she was a daughter of Russell and Mabel Barger Repp. She was educated locally, and worked as her families’ primary caretaker. She married Paul Jones January 9, 1945. Mr. Jones passed away in February of 1981.

Margaret was a 64 year member of the Eagles Club, serving twice as the Club president. She also played bingo for 35 years, enjoyed shuffleboard, and was the oldest living member of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving her are two daughters, Patricia Stanich of Watertown, Teresa (Ben) Wisner of Adams Center; & 5 grandchildren, Gregory Graves of Batavia, Tyler Graves of Albany, Ricke Paul Greenier of Fulton, Darren Greenier of Fulton, Stephanie McWayne of Lorraine. Also surviving are 8 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister Lillian Hanie and two brothers Andrew Repp, Sr. and Joseph Repp.

GREAT BEND – Paul G. Stiles, 88, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, February 7, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family, under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.

Paul was born on November 4, 1928 to Rev. Harry E. Stiles and Gladys Clark Stiles of Kendrew. Paul attended Rensselaer Falls High School. After graduation, Paul joined the Army. He was deployed to Germany with the Occupational Forces and worked as a Decoder Operator. Paul and his brothers, Everest and Keith, started EK&P Stiles where they worked in the construction field and purchased property and/or antiques. The brothers split up the business with Paul keeping the construction and Keith going on to form Stiles Auction House. Paul and family relocated in 1983 and started Great Bend Construction with his two sons, Brent and Chris.

Paul married his childhood sweetheart Betty Manford on June 21, 1952. He is survived by his wife, Betty and children, Kim Stiles, Shelley (Randall) Stevens, Christopher Stiles and Brent Stiles. His oldest daughter Denise (Michael) Streeter, died in May 2015. He is also predeceased by 5 sisters and 5 brothers. He is survived by a brother Harry Stiles of Rensselaer Falls, 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 4-7pm at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, NY. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017 at 11:00am at the Woolworth Memorial United Methodist Church in Great Bend, NY.

Kurt Potter Dano

Albany - Kurt Potter Dano, 86, formerly of Watertown, passed away at St Peter’s Hospice Inn on February 2, 2017 with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Clayton, NY on August 17, 1930 and was the son of Melzer & Oleta Potter Dano. He was the devoted husband of Angela Burdick Dano who passed away in 2009.

Kurt was a youth baseball coach and enjoyed camping, fishing on the St Lawrence River, bowling, casino trips, horseracing and above all spending time with his grandchildren. He was a veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his 10 children, Terry, Gary, Denise Fiddes, Diane Cavin, Jerry, Debra Graff, Larry, S. Kurt, Kerry & Barry as well as 22 grandchildren & 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Muriel Pond & Hazel Kinnevan.

A private memorial service will be held at Saratoga National Cemetery at a later date.

Rita Sophia Graffi, 85, passed February 8, 2017 at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home where she has been a resident.

The funeral service will be held 5 p.m. Saturday, February 11 at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home 117 N. Massey St., Watertown with Pastor Paul D. Luisi officiating.

Calling hours will be 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, February 11 at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the N. Watertown Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Born on September 5, 1931 in Watertown, daughter of Samuel and Sofia (Spooner) Klee, she graduated from Watertown High School in 1949. She then graduated in 1952 from the House of the Good Samaritan School of Nursing as a registered nurse.

In 1952 she went to work at the House of the Good Samaritan and worked beside Dr. Nelson in the operating room for several years. In 1979 she worked at the Samaritan Keep Nursing Home up until she retired in 1994.

She married Johann Graffi Jr. of Watertown on December 29, 1956 at the Concordia Lutheran Church with Rev. Vogt. officiating. Mr. Graffi was a mechanic at Town Motors and retired from the NJ National Guard at Fort Drum.

Rita was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and she and her husband enjoyed spending summers at their cottage in Hy Knoll.

Among her survivors are son and daughter and law, John M. and Karen Graffi, Felts Mills; a daughter and son in law, Gerald and Linda M. Brotherton, Watertown; a brother, Samuel R. Klee , Brentwood, Long Island; a sister and a brothers in law, Mary Alice Barkley, PA, Leonard Edus, Watertown ; three granddaughters and their husbands, Amanda and Sean Santucci, Jessica and Jeffrey Bukowski, Alicia and Greg Eddy; a grandson, Adam John Brotherton, three great granddaughters and three great grandsons, Sophia, Gianna, Jack, Jace, Mariella and Garrison; several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents she is predeceased by her husband, Johann Graffi, a sister Betty J. Edus and a brother in law, Christopher Barkley.

A Celebration of life gathering will follow at the Norwood American Legion. Christopher passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. Chris is survived by his wife, Tonya Bernard, Norfolk; two sons, Sheldon Bernard, Norwood; Shaiden Bernard, Norfolk; his two daughters, Alicia Bernard, Florida; Shaylee Bernard, Norfolk; a grandson and a granddaughter, both of Florida; his father John P. Margittay Sr., Norwood; his biological father, Kenneth Langdok, Wisconsin; two brothers, Brian Bernard, Weedsport; John and Ann Margittay Jr., Norwood and his six sisters, Barbara Bernard, Florida; Emily and Kevin Enslow, Norwood; Betsy Darabon and Robert Myers, Norwood; Gerry Edgecomb, Wisconsin; Vickie Muth, Wisconsin and Laurie Langdok, Nevada as well as several nieces and nephews. Christopher was pre-deceased by his mother, Frances Margittay on September 26, 2016.

Born in Potsdam, NY on November 6, 1965 to Kenneth Langdok and Frances Hooper, Chris married Tonya M. Crump on April 3, 1999. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Local 106, Albany NY, working locally for Perras Excavating in Massena and J. E. Sheehan Construction in Potsdam. Christopher had a passion for the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing and cooking. He also enjoyed to gamble on occasion and absolutely loved spending time with his children and family. Eleanor ‘Ellie’ Toper, 89, formerly of Schley Drive, passed away February 9, 2017, at the Samaritan Summit Village.

Ellie was born April 12, 1927, in Watertown, a daughter of Perley and Ruby Runions Bigness. In 1945 she graduated from Alexandria Bay High School. She married John Toper on September 10, 1949 at Asbury United Methodist Church, with the Reverend McClung officiating. Ellie was an operator for the NY Telephone Company in Watertown and also lived for a number of years in Malone, before returning to Watertown.

Ellie enjoyed ceramics, flower gardening, golf, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a former member of the Watertown Golf Club and the Malone Golf Club for many years.

Surviving besides her husband John are a son Jon A. (Cathy) Toper, Amsterdam, NY two daughters, Jill E. (Timothy) Cook, Webster, NY, Beth E. (William) Maguire, Adams Center, NY, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. A brother Darwin Bigness and a sister, June Wiswell died before her.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 pm on Tuesday February 14, 2017 at D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A memorial service will be held immediately following the calling hours and a private memorial service and burial at the convenience of the family.

Rita A. Duvall, 72, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, February 9th, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Syracuse surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Watertown, February 18, 1945 and was the daughter of Allie and Nettie Buker Calhoun. She was educated at Watertown High School. Rita worked for many years in the Town of Watertown Clerks office, later working as court clerk for several Town judges. After leaving from the Town, she worked as a clerk at the Housing & Dentack Dental Clinic on Fort Drum.

On May 3, 1963, she married Ernest Duvall, Jr. at Asbury United Methodist Church. The marriage was later blessed at Holy Family Church.

Rita was a Town of Watertown Fire Department Auxiliary member, a Watertown Eagles Auxiliary member, and was also a member of Jefferson County Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed sewing, homemaking, being outdoors, and spending time with her grandchildren. Rita and Ernie owned and operated Harbor Crafts Boutique in Watertown & Sackets Harbor.

Rita will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many.

Surviving besides her husband, Ernest, Jr., are 4 sons, John and Christy Duvall of Watertown, Michael and Cathy Duvall of Sherrill, NY, Geoffery Duvall and Kristan Peck of Watertown, Richard and Jennifer Duvall of Watertown. Also surviving are many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She is predeceased by 5 siblings, Pauline Calhoun, Corrine Calhoun, Thelma Halpin, Leroy Calhoun, and Lita Schneider.

Calling hours for Rita will be 4:00pm to 7:00pm Wednesday, February 15th at Reed and Benoit Funeral Home. The funeral service will be 11am Thursday, February 16th at the funeral home with Pastor Shane Ryan officiating. Friends and family are invited to join us for a Celebration of Life, hosted by lifelong neighbor and friends, George and Luann Burnham following the service on Thursday at the Eagles club. Burial this spring will be at Glenwood Cemetery.

Alma J. Peterson

Alma Jane Roggenkamp Peterson of 358 Franklin Street, Watertown passed away in the early afternoon Thursday, February 9, 2017. Alma was the daughter of August Martin and Minnie Barker Roggenkamp, and was born April 12, 1927 in Watertown.

Alma was the youngest of five siblings, joining Helen, William, Grace, and Isabel at the family homestead on South Hamilton Street. She graduated with the 1944 class of Watertown High School and worked at the Flower Memorial Library and, later, as a dental assistant for Dr. Ruderman. On August 2, 1947, Alma married the love of her life, Fred H. Peterson of Brownville, NY. They lived for many years on Arlington Street and in 1967 moved into the former Haas home on Franklin Street, her home for nearly 50 years. Fred H. died November 25, 1991 at their home on Pillar Point.

Alma is survived by six of her seven children; Fred M. Peterson, of Kiawah Island, SC; Thomas H. Peterson (Dennis Laemmermann) of Watertown, NY; Helen P. Willard of Pillar Point, NY; Anne P. Brenon of Brownville, NY; Jennifer P. Wood (Terry Wood) of Lowville, NY; and Theodore A. Peterson (Darcy Griffin) of Philadelphia, NY. Her daughter, Jane “Payne” Peterson, died April 5, 2009 from complications of multiple sclerosis. She was also pre deceased by two sons-in-law, Matthew Brenon in 2012 and Frank Willard in 2013, and by all of her siblings.

Alma is also survived by grandchildren Ioseph Franco Peterson, Amanda Jo Phillips (Craig), Drew Laemmermann and Maureen Laemmermann; Luke, Collin and Meganne Brenon; Ryan, Eli, Anna and Sara Wood; Shane Peterson; and great granddaughter Avery Phillips. Also surviving are a nephew Michael Foley (Susan), niece Patty Gould Rosenburg (Eric), niece Karen Gould West (Rudy), nephew William Roggenkamp (Patti), nephew Robert Peterson (Sue), several grand nephews, grandnieces, great grandnephews and great grandnieces.

Alma was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for over 80 years, serving as a member of vestry, choir, altar guild and lay ministry. She was also a member of Church Women United. She loved to travel, do crossword and jigsaw puzzles, spend time with her family and friends often playing dominoes and card games. She was a great bowler, active in co-ed and women’s leagues and loved to play and watch golf. She loved to read and shared that joy with her husband and children. She always rooted for her children’s sports teams and was an avid SU basketball fan.

The funeral will be held on Sunday, February 19th at 1:30pm at the Chapel of St. Paul of Trinity Episcopal Church, with Jennifer Kenna officiating. Following the service, her cremains will be placed in the parish columbarium, joining husband Fred, daughter Jane and sisters Helen and Isabel.

Memorial donations may be made to the Chapel of St. Paul or the music ministry of Trinity Episcopal Church, Watertown, NY or to The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the ALS Association or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. LOWVILLE - John C. Hirschey, 73, died Thursday, February 9, 2017 at his home.

John was born on June 12, 1943 in Lowville the son of the late Leland A. and Bernice S. (Farney) Hirschey. He graduated from Lowville Academy and Central School in 1961 and Jefferson Community College; he continued his education and graduated with a bachelor’s in accounting from Rochester Institute of Technology. He married Molly A. Grandjean on October 2, 1965 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Robert Stover, officiating. The couple made their home in Lowville. John was a well known CPA in Lowville for over 40 years where he established, The Accounting Firm of Hirschey and Associates. Molly died on Saturday, January 13, 2001.

He is survived by his children, Erik S. and Pamela J. Hirschey of Glenfield; Heidi L. Hirschey of Morristown, NJ; his sisters, LuWenda M. Mohrman; Sara A. (Scott) King; Martha J. Cuilla; Rebecca J. Hirschey; Kristina M. Panowicz; and Laura L. (Samuel) Villanti; his brothers, Ronald L.; Bruce E. (Gayle); Michael L. (Judy); Martin A. (Linda); Randall L. (Shirley); Loren D.; Norman J. (Vikki); and Daniel J. Hirschey, his mother-in-law, Shirley J. Grandjean; his in-laws; Reginald (Kathy) Grandjean; Rosie (Michael) Souva; Diane (Robert) Purvines and Richard Campbell; several nieces and nephews.

John is predeceased by his sister, Diane Bernice; his father-in-law, Lester Grandjean; a brother-in-law, Timothy J. Panowicz; sisters-in-law, Cynthia G. Campbell; Rita S. and her husband Harry F. Ortlieb.

He loved history, classic boats, and old cars and was a member of Northern Cruisers of Lowville. He was in the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce and was businessman of the year in 2000. He served on numerous boards including: Oswegatchie FFA Camp, Brookside Senior Living Community, Ives Hill Retirement Community, and Lewis County Hospital Foundation. He was a past member of the Lowville Kiwanis. He supported fundraisers for Lowville Academy and Central School, FFA Camp Oswegatchie, the Lowville Fire Department and Marine Corps Toys for Tots.

John loved spending time with Molly and his children at their camp on Soft Maple and spending time with his family at numerous gatherings. He enjoyed woodworking, working on anything with an engine, and generally getting his hands dirty.

Mr. Hirschey served in the U.S. Army stateside during Vietnam and was honorably discharged.

His funeral service will be on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Lowville Mennonite Church with Rev. Evan Zehr officiating. Spring burial will be in Martinsburg Cemetery.

Family and friends may call at the church on Monday, February 13th, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9:00P.M.

NORWOOD—Calling Hours for 89 year old Robert S. “Bob” Sleicher, a resident of 126 Austin Ridge Road, Norwood, will be held Thursday at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be held in the Cranberry Lake Cemetery in the springtime. Bob passed away Friday, February 10, 2017 at his home with his wife at his side. Robert is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jessica, Norwood; his three sons, Peter Roberts; Sanford, ME; Peter and Christina Sleicher, RI; Bret and Azure Dee Sleicher, CT; his three daughters, Kristin Sleicher, NM; Heather Sleicher, FL and Carrie and Jamie Cherlin, FL. Bob is also survived by his eleven grandchildren and two brothers, Charles Sleicher, WA and Harry and Ruth Sleicher, RI.

Born in Troy, NY as the youngest of three children to Charles and Beatrice Cole Sleicher, Bob graduated from High School and attended Moses Brown in Providence, RI where he was captain of the track team. He was the only athlete in the history of Moses Brown to attain a State Championship in Pole Vault. He later attended Brown University and also excelled in track. He was again the Captain of the track team and won the Heptagonal Championships in both Pole Vault ( vaulting to 13’4”) and High Hurdles. Bob was also selected to compete in the Olympic tryouts, but a broken arm prevented him from competing. Robert entered the U.S. Army, and served during the Korean Conflict, earning 5 medals. Robert managed the Seaboard Foundation for 39 with his brother in New England, employing over 250 at its best. In 1986, Bob had a heart attack while hunting in Cranberry Lake and later choose to move to Potsdam to retire and pursue his painting career in the Adirondack Mountains.

Throughout his prestigious career in art, Robert has been awarded 54 awards including 2 gold medals in all 50 States and 13 foreign countries. His works reflected his love of the outdoors and wildlife. He has painted many of the covers for the award winning magazine NYS Conservationist, Yankee as well as other outdoor publications. Some of his achievements are the Scribner Prize, the Rhode Island Art Medal, the Conservative Painters Award and the Lincoln Prize. He has been a member of The Society of Animal Arts since 1967 as well as being a member of the Providence Watercolor Club, the Dumas Smithfield Sportsman Club and a honorary member of the Dewitt Fishing and Game Club. He had a passion for the outdoors, enjoyed hunting, fishing and canoeing, which provided vision for his artwork and family. Robert also enjoyed wood carving, being a Master Gunstock Carver, one of only 16 in the United States at one time. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing and watching sports. David P. Wells

Funeral services for Deacon David P. Wells, age 72 of Ogdensburg are incomplete with the Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Mr. Wells passed away on Saturday (Feb 11th) at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse after suffering a heart attack at home a few days prior.
