Anna M. Harper

Carthage- Anna M. Harper, 97, formerly of Fuller Rd., died on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the Samaritan Summit Village in Watertown.

She was born on October 29, 1919 in Great Bend to the late Kenneth & Emma Burke Gaines and attended school in Great Bend. She married Vernon W. Harper on June 28, 1938 at the Holy Family Church in Watertown. Anna was primarily a homemaker, while her husband ran the farm.

She is survived by two sons, Robert (Judy) Harper, Arlington, Texas; David (Brenda) Harper, Carthage; four daughters, Rochelle (George) Waite, Carthage; Carol (David) Stoodley, Adams Center; Diana (George) Ashcraft, Watertown and Laureen (Bill) Duprey, Dexter. Also surviving are her 2 half -brothers, Ronald (Barb) & Kenneth (Phyllis) Gaines, Copenhagen, 22- grandchildren, 40-great grandchildren and 15-great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her husband Vernon W. Harper, 2003, her son, Charles T. Harper, July 4, 1989 and her siblings; Martin, Earl, Claude, Ralph, Ilene, Merlene, Leone, Agnes, Betty, Lorraine and Blanche.

She sold Avon for 40 years. She was a member of the Red Hats Society; she also enjoyed bowling in the Carthage Bowling League.

Arrangements were made with the Scherer Funeral Home; a funeral service will be held in the Chapel the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc., 500 State St., on Sunday, February 19th at 4:00 PM, with the Rev. Thomas James, Pastor of the Anglican Catholic Church, Carthage, officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, prior to the service, from 2-4 PM. Burial will take place in the spring in the Sunnyside Cemetery, Naumburg.

OGDENSBURG- Sharron L. Sprague-Vesneski, age 73, passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the United Helpers RiverLedge Nursing Home in Ogdensburg.

Sharron was born on June 2, 1943 in Gouverneur, NY to Ward W. and Lena E. (Hicks) Sprague. She graduated from the Gouverneur Central School in 1961 and from the Crane School of Music in Potsdam in 1965. In 1966 Sharron received her Masters degree in Voice and Piano.

Sharron was a teacher. She taught at the Ogdensburg Free Academy while earning her Masters degree and then she taught at West Point; teaching the officer’s children. While she was at West Point she formed a choir called the West Point Cadets. Later on, Sharron earned her Masters in Psychiatric Social Work.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; was a member of the literacy volunteers, and for a short time she taught English as a Second Language (ESL). Sharron also belonged to numerous teachers’ associations. In her free time, Sharron enjoyed sewing and quilting. She traveled extensively to historic places and her favorite at-home past time was reading historical biographies of our Founding Fathers and others of historical note. She has also been a featured speaker at DAR meetings.

Sharron is survived by three brothers, Russell W. and Priscilla Sprague of Zion Crossroads, VA and David C. Sprague of Antwerp, NY; Phillip and Cheryl Sprague of Reston, VA; a sister, Pauline and Tim Valuckas of Litchfield, CT and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents, Ward W. and Lena E. Sprague, and her brother, Stephen H. Sprague.

Eleanor F. Calhoun

Clayton; Mrs. Eleanor F. Calhoun, 103, died Friday at the Samaritan Medical Center.

There will be no calling hours. There will be a Spring Graveside Committal Service in Clayton Cemetery at a time and date to be announced.

Eleanor was born September 27th, 1913, in Watertown, the daughter of Manley and Alice Atherton Rusho.

She attended Clayton schools.

On August 22nd, 1930, she married Benson Calhoun Sr. in Ogdensburg. Mr. Calhoun died January 22nd, 1962.

Eleanor and her husband farmed on Grindstone Island until his death. She then worked for a number of years at the Clayton Central School in the cafeteria, where she worked in various capacities.

She lived in Florida for 17 years, returning to Clayton in 1990. While in Florida she worked in her daughter’s restaurant in Jupiter for 10 years.

Eleanor was a former member of the Eastern Star; she loved reading, gardening, and especially being with her family.

Surviving is one daughter, Elaine (Raymond) McGuire of Jupiter, Fl.; one son Ben (Karen) Calhoun of Clayton; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

One daughter, Loraine Elger, one brother, Leon Rusho Sr., and one sister Mrs. Carlyn Hammersley, all from Clayton, died before her.

Vaneeta L. Eager

Vaneeta L. Eager, 83, of Watertown, died Monday February 13, 2017 at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown. A graveside service will be held in the spring in the Rural Cemetery, Adams, NY.

Arrangements are with the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams.

Born October 24, 1933 in Watertown, daughter of Forest and Louise (Summers) Sprague, she attended Adams High School.

Following school she began working at Samaritan Medical Center where she worked in housekeeping and laundry, retiring in 1992 after 42 years.

She married Milton Eager on July 13, 1969. The couple lived in Dexter and Glen Park. Following the death of her husband on April 7, 1989, she later moved to Watertown.

She is survived by one sister Virginia Berkey, Adams; one brother Leslie C. Sprague, Canandaigua; several nieces and nephews and her good friends Frank and Sheila Viscotha, Watertown.

Vaneeta was a former member of the Dexter Legion Auxiliary.

Ramon F. LaLone

Ramon F. “Ray” LaLone, 84, of Adams, died Sunday evening February 12, 2017 at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown. There will be a funeral mass at 11:00am Saturday February 18th at Saint Cecilia’s Church, Adams, with Rev. Martin E. Cline officiating. Spring burial with military honors will be in Saint Cecilia’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be 5:00-8:00 pm Friday at the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams.

Born October 10, 1932 in Henderson, son of Earl and Genevieve (Hickok) LaLone, he graduated from Adams High School in 1951. He entered the United States Army in 1952, serving in Korea. Following his discharge in 1954, he worked for National Biscuit Company and then for UPS for many years retiring in 1991.

He married Marilyn Wilder on July 7, 1956 at Saint Cecilia’s Church, Adams. The couple lived in Watertown before moving to Adams in 1961. Beginning in 1993, Ray and Marilyn spent their winters in Florida and returning to Adams where they spent their summers.

Surviving are his wife Marilyn, two sons Jim (Joan) LaLone, Watertown, Joel (Laurie) LaLone, Watertown; five grandchildren Kyle, Eric, Emily, Jaimeson, and Jeff LaLone; one great grandson; Desmond LaLone, two brothers, David LaLone, Adams, Robert LaLone, Ellisburg; one sister Ann Werchinski, Watertown; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by step-grandchildren Angie (Steve) Ramil, Teri Beth (Justin) Drake, and Bill Leepy.

He is predeceased by a brother Dick LaLone and sister Kay Read.

Ray played golf in the Monday night Twilight League at the Watertown Golf Club, as well as the Adams Golf Club, and also enjoyed playing at many other golf courses.

He was a member of the Fairways Country Club Mens Golf Association, a Communicant of Saint Cecilia’s Church, member of the Knights of Columbus Council, Don Rounds Post 586 American Legion, and VFW Post in FL.

He was a former member of the Adams Fire Department and VFW, Adams.

Joseph G. Sevick

Joseph (Joe) George Sevick, 92, of Winthrop, New York and York, Maine passed away at his NY home on Sunday, February 12, 2017. Joe made his year-round residence in the North Country in July of 2013.

Joe was born in Yonkers, NY on his parent’s (Flora and Joseph) wedding anniversary, October 15, 1924. He graduated from Yonkers High School in 1942, and attended Syracuse University to study forestry. During his first semester of freshman year he decided to enlist in the Army. He saw this as his duty, and served in World War II as a Sergeant in the 290th Infantry Regiment, Army of the United States. He was awarded the Purple Heart post the Battle of the Bulge which was the last major German offensive campaign of World War II.

On August 11, 1946, he married his love, Harriet Beatrice Hamilton. She died on December 26, 2008. Joe is survived by two sons, Bruce Hamilton Sevick and Joel Sevick; his two daughter-in- laws Joanne Sevick and Marilyn Sevick; three grandchildren Samuel Blaise Sevick, Michael Anne Sevick, and Gregory Joel Sevick; a great grand-daughter Josephine Alice Sevick, and Samuel Sevick’s fiancé, Lillian Alice Phippen.

Joe took advantage of the G.I. Bill and returned to college where he received a B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Missouri School of Mines (MSM), an advanced degree of Metallurgical Engineer from the University of Missouri Rolla (UMR), and a management degree from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Joe retired in 1983 as senior vice president of the St. Joe Minerals Corp. of Clayton, Missouri, which he joined as a research engineer in 1949. He served in various capacities at the Josephtown, PA., smelter before his administrative assignment to the NYC headquarters staff in 1961.

He was active in several civic and professional groups, serving as Director and Vice Chairman of the International Lead Zinc Research Organization. He was also a member of UMR’s Order of the Golden Shillelagh. In retirement, he donated his expertise to the York County Audubon Society in Maine, Strawberry Banke of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and York Hospital. Joe was an avid card player. Loved playing tennis, golf, and spending time with his family, and two cats; Pinky and Fuzzy.

Gordon E. Seeley, 71, formerly of Watertown, passed away Tuesday February 14th at the Central Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Syracuse, where he had been a patient for 3 years. He had previously lived at the Samaritan Summit Village and Whispering Pines Home on Coffeen St., both in Watertown.

Spring graveside services will be held in North Watertown Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Watertown.

He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Joanne Seeley, Watertown; three nieces, Amber (Peter) Harmych, Dawn (Todd) DeLair and Kim (Joe) Barrett, all of Watertown; many great nieces

He was born in Watertown, August 6, 1945, a son to Edward O. and Catherine Haskins Seeley. He graduated from Watertown High School. Gordon was a courier for Key Bank for many years. After retiring from the bank, he worked in maintenance at Brookside Cemetery.

Gordon enjoyed watching sports on television.

Funeral services for Charlotte S. Wallace, age 91 of State Street in Heuvelton, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at the Heuvelton Presbyterian Church with Rev. Rob Schirmer officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Hillcrest Cemetery in Heuvelton.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Mrs. Wallace passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at the Maplewood Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family.

Surviving are her children Colleen (Curt) Ross and Larry (Kim) Wallace all of Canton; a brother, Lyle (Bonnie) Sloan of Heuvelton; a sister-in-law, Lorna Sloan of Heuvelton; grandchildren William Wallace of California, Ashley (David) White of Eugene, OR, Ryan Ross of Syracuse, Jamie Wallace, Nicholas Wallace and Beth Wallace all of Ogdensburg; and great-grandchildren Matthew Wallace, Todd Wallace and Brielle Wallace; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband William F. Wallace and a brother Donald Sloan.

Charlotte was born on August 5, 1925 in Heuvelton, NY, daughter of the late Floyd and Pearl (Foster) Sloan. She graduated from Heuvelton High School in 1944 and continued her education at the Shamrock Beauty School in Ogdensburg. She married William F. Wallace on June 22, 1948 at St. Raphael’s Rectory with Rev. Harold Martin officiating the couple’s marriage.

She began her career at Alice Ann’s Beauty Salon in Ogdensburg in 1946, and in 1950 she owned and operated Charlotte’s Beauty Nook in Heuvelton where she worked until her retirement in 1990.

Charlotte was a life member of the Order of Eastern Stars-DePeyster Chapter, the Heuvelton Presbyterian Church and the Heuvelton Women’s Bowling League. Charlotte belonged to the Colton, Lisbon, and Madrid-Waddington senior citizen groups. She was former president of the Skirts N’ Flirts square dancing club and enjoyed bowling, playing cards, traveling, sewing, ceramics, and watching the Syracuse Orange basketball and the New York Yankees baseball. She especially enjoyed sitting on her front porch and spending time with her friends and family.

LOWVILLE – Loretta Rose Stoll, 83, formerly of Watson, died early Monday morning, February 13, 2017 at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility with her husband Bob and family at her side.

Loretta was born on August 14, 1933 in Black River the daughter of the late Oakley and Edna Secor Clark. She attended a one room school house in Black River. On September 22, 1951 she was united in marriage with Robert Frank Stoll in Gates, NY. Loretta worked for her father at Oakey’s Restaurant in Lowville and Meals on Wheels through Lewis County Opportunities.

She was a member of North Country Swingers and Square Dance, she loved reading and knitting.

She is survived by her husband Bob, and their children, Pamela and Gary Francis of Florida; Paul and Robin Stoll of Michigan; and Penny and Wayne Farney of Watson; thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren; and her two great-great grandchildren on the way; and several cousins.

She and Bob attended Trinity Episcopal Church in Lowville and Church of Christ Disciples in Felts Mills.

A spring graveside service will held in Felts Mills Cemetery.

Hillard E. Bancroft

Pillar Point; Mr. Hillard E. Bancroft, 94, died Sunday, at the home of his daughter, in Watertown.

Calling hours will be 7-9pm on Friday, Feb.17th, at the TLC Funeral Home. There will be Military Honors provided by Fort Drum, will be at 8pm during the calling hours.

Mr. Bancroft was born January 8th, 1923, in Gouverneur, the son of Verton and Helen Bancroft.

He attended Gouverneur Schools, and then entered the United States Army on Jan. 2nd, 1943, and was honorably discharged Oct. 28th, 1945 at the rank of Corporal. While in the service, he served in England, Rhineland, and North France as a Medical Corpsman.

Mr. Bancroft then married the former Florence E. Lawrence; she died October 12th, 1996.

He worked for many years at Black Clawson as a Machinist Foreman, retiring in the late 1980’s.

Surviving is one daughter, Deborah Bancroft of Watertown; one grand daughter, Hillary Rowland (Collins) of Watertown; two great grandchildren, Riley and Logan Collins, of Watertown; his loving cat, Sweet Pea.

Harold P. Farren

Gouverneur - Harold P. Farren, 77, passed away at home on Tuesday, February 14, 2017.

There are no funeral services and arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Harold was born in Fullerville on February 10, 1940, the son of Harold and Thelma Hitchman Farren.

He attended school in Gouverneur and served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1961.

Harold worked for Rouse Construction Company for several years and more recently worked at Fort Drum.

He was a member of the Gouverneur VFW and enjoyed hunting and working in the outdoors.

Harold married Peggy Palmer on April 26, 1985 in Gouverneur.

He is survived by his wife Peggy, a stepdaughter Laura Looker of Gouverneur, a stepson Lucas Macaulay of Gouverneur, a niece Juanita Farren of California, and 3 grandchildren Jared Hartle, Bailey Looker, and Elijah Looker. Harold is predeceased by his father Harold, his mother Thelma Lutz, and a brother Dale Farren.

Glenn A. Schouten

Glenn Allan Schouten, age 89, resident of Chaumont passed away Saturday at Upstate Medical Center. Glenn resided in Chaumont for 55 years, and spent time in Pulaski and North Syracuse. He was born October 6, 1927 in Pineville, the son of Elmer and Mabel Whitney Schouten. He graduated from Mexico High School in 1945 and served in the Army Air Corp from 1944 until 1946. Glenn married Mary Stearns on August 29, 1952. He was employed by Conrail in Dewitt for 40 years, retiring in 1988. Glenn was a member of the Masonic Lodge #802 in Chaumont.

Surviving are his wife Mary, one son, Russell Schouten of Long Beach, CA, one grandson, Bryan Schouten of Watertown, and one great-grandson, Bryan Schouten of Watertown. Glenn was predeceased by one son, Todd Schouten who passed away July 4, 2016.

Calling hours will be held 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, February 17, at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski. Graveside services will be held in the spring at time to be announced at Pine Plans Cemetery, Clay.

Robert D. Gurley

Robert D. Gurley, 63, of 24543 First St., Herrings, passed February 11, 2017 at his home.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are with the Bruce Funeral Home, Black River.

Born on January 23, 1954 in Marion, SC, son of William and Gladys M. (Spivey) Gurley, he attended East Side High in Paterson, NJ.

Following school he entered the U.S. Army in 1972 and received several decorations including the National Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Star, six Army Good Conduct Medals, four Overseas Service Ribbons, a Commendation Medal with 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was Honorably Discharged on October 31, 1992 as Staff Sergeant.

Upon his discharge he went to work for the Department of Defense on Fort Drum up until he retired in July of 2011.

Robert married Kathy L. Bagnato on January 30, 2015 in Carthage and the couple resided in Herrings. Kathy currently is employed at Byrne Dairy on Coffeen St. in Watertown.

He enjoyed going to the movies, playing the slot machines but most of all spending a quiet night at home with his wife.

Among his survivors are his beloved wife of two years, Kathy L. Gurley; two stepsons and their companions, Joseph N. Martin and Jessica Neubauer, Wappingers Falls, NY, Joshua M. Martin and Zachary Doubleday, Watertown; two sisters and a brother in law, Doretha and Lenew Foxworth, Paterson, NJ, Christina Bethea, Paterson, NJ; a sister in law, Nadine Gurley; an aunt, Isadora Sams; several nieces , nephews, cousins; his loving cats, Phoebe, Trudy and Trouble and twin grandchildren are due in June.

He is predeceased by two brothers, William Morris and Willy Nathan Gurley, a sister, Doris Ann Hughes and a brother in law, Wally Bethea.

Monica M. Moran, 59 of Cleveland, NY and formerly of Adams, NY passed away February 11, 2017 at University Hospital in Syracuse.

Monica was born September 21, 1957 in Gouverneur, NY to Ralph and Joan (Cassidy) Maxwell. She graduated from Harrisville Central School in 1975 and worked on several farms in the area including the last six years at Butterville Farms in Belleville.

Monica enjoyed photography, horseback riding, animals and the outdoors.

She is survived by her husband Rodger; her mother Joan Maxwell (companion John Bancroft), Harrisville, NY; a brother Ken (Ashley) Maxwell and niece and nephew Eryn and Landon, Potsdam, NY; a sister Paula Maxwell, Harrisonburg, VA; and many caring friends and relatives.

She was predeceased by her father Ralph and sister Stephanie.

There will be a Memorial Service/Celebration of her life on March 4th at 1:00 pm at the Belleville Fire Hall.

Joseph A. Hale, Jr., passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at the Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown after a brief illness.

Calling hours will be held at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Inc. 632 State St., Watertown, NY on Friday, February 17th from 11am – 1pm with a funeral service to begin at 1:00 pm.

Joseph was born on April 10, 1931 to the late Joseph and Essie Hale of Westifield, NJ. Joseph was educated in the New Jersey School System. He served in the Army in the 50’s during the Korean War, and was honorable discharged as a sergeant.

During his career he worked at H.P. Taverson as a truck driver in Westifiel, NJ, Seaway Truck Company driving tractor trailers, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy, and Joe retired as a sergeant on the police force in Alexandria Bay, NY.

Joe was a member of the Elks of Westifield, NJ, Brownville American Legion and a lifetime member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1400, Watertown, NY. Joe was also a Department of New York 4th District Commander.

He is survived by a daughter, Deborah Hale Hunter, Elizabeth, NJ; a son Elliott Hale, New Brunswick, NJ; six grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, brother, Alvin Hale, Philadelphia, PA; his special companion, Ursula Mickle, Watertown and several nieces and nephews.
