Lillian E. Pinkham

Lillian E. Pinkham, S. James St., Carthage, N.Y. died Friday, March 17, 2017. Her passing on St. Patrick’s Day is most appropriate as Lillian always claimed to be “very, very, Irish”.

Lillian was born in Island Falls, ME. on January 28, 1926, to Shepard and Loraine Jones Edwards. She graduated from Island Falls High School and went on to earn her Psychology degree from the Univ. of Maine, Orono in 1948. It was there that she met and married the love of her life, Robert A. Pinkham. Robert died in 1993.

Lillian loved music, dogs and a nice glass of wine, but more than anything she enjoyed her large and loving family.

Survivors include Lillian and Robert’s 4 children; Laureen P. Waterhouse (John) of Carthage, Bruce V. Pinkham (Roseann) of Castorland, Gregory C. Pinkham of Carthage and Scott R. Pinkham (Natalie) of Kokomo, Ind.

She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; Mary Benson (Mike), Mark Waterhouse (Jennifer), Timothy Waterhouse and Kathleen Purington (Sam), all of Carthage. Also, Jessica Hirschey (Jon) of New Providence, NJ, Rachel Woodworth (Rob) of Carthage, Robert W. Pinkham (Jane) of Lowville, Sarah McGough (Mark) of Elyria, OH. Also, Matthew, Paul and Robert A. Pinkham, all of Bloomington, Ind.

Lillian had 15 great-grandchildren; Andrew, Lillian, Clara, Eric, Luke, Jack, Julia, Charles, Brooklynn, Colton, Jackson, Logan, Nora, Ian and Connor.

She is also survived by 2 sisters-in-law; Janet Edwards of Hampton, NH and Mary P. Croswell of Waterville, ME.

Besides her husband, Lillian was predeceased by her parents, 2 brothers, Shepard and Ray Edwards and her daughter-in-law, Susan Pinkham.

There will be no calling hours or funeral but a private celebration for Lillian and Robert will be held at the family camp in Maine.

Carol A. Cozzi

Carol A. Cozzi, 82, of Watertown passed away Friday afternoon, March 17, 2017, at Lewis County General Hospital. She had resided at the East Road Adult Home, Lowville, N.Y. prior to the hospital and in Watertown before going to Lowville.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown on Wednesday March 22, 2017 from, 11:00am to 1:00pm with a prayer service following at 1:30pm with Msgr. Robert H. Aucoin, Pastor of St. Patrick’s Church presiding. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

Carol was born in Lowville on June 24, 1934, daughter of George L. and Mary Louise Post Millard. She graduated from Copenhagen High School and the Watertown School of Commerce. On July 30, 1960 she married Richard C. Cozzi at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Benoit Dostie, MSC, officiating.

She worked for Lawrence Ormiston, corporate council for the City of Watertown, as a secretary, for eight years at Ruddell Business Machines, as a secretary for Dr. William D. Carter, and as a secretary and bookkeeper for Dr. William Grave. For fourteen years she worked in the business office at the House of the Good Samaritan. She had attended Holy Family, St. Patrick’s, and St. Cecilia’s Churches, of which she was a member of its Ladies Group. Carol dearly loved her family. She was a former member of the National Secretary’s Association, Watertown. Carol enjoyed bowling and was a member of several bowling leagues, including the Watertown Women’s City League and the Utility Co-Ed Bowling League of Niagara Mohawk. She also enjoyed sewing, flower gardening, and writing poetry.

Carol is survived by her husband, Richard, Oswego; two brothers, Wilbur Millard and wife, Marie, Carthage and Gerald Millard and wife, Charlotte, Lowville; two sisters, Arletha Zecher, W. Carthage and Marlyn Bickom, LaFargeville; brother-in-law, Jack Grimsley, Trenton,Tenn.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Norma Jean Millard, in infancy, and Alfreda Grimsley, and two brothers-in-law, Richard Zecher and William Bickom.

Beatrice E. Steele

LaFargeville; Mrs. Beatrice E. Steele, 92, County Rt. 13, died Saturday at her home, where she was under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

As per her request, there will be no calling hours or funeral.

There will be a Graveside Committal Service, Wednesday, May 24th, at 11am, at Omar Cemetery.

Beatrice was born May 24th, 1924, in the Town of Orleans, the daughter of Zion and Carrie VanBrocklin Fitchette.

She graduated from Clayton High School in 1942.

On April 6th, 1949, she married George Steele at her parents home. Mr. Steele died in 2001.

She helped her husband with farming for years, and drove school bus for LaFargeville School, retiring in 1986.

Beatrice enjoyed sewing and was a former member of the LaFargeville Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Carry (Sheila) of LaFargeville, and Patrick of LaFargeville, and his children’s mother, Bobbi-Jo, of Herman; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Six brothers died before her, Tom, James, Richard, Eugene, Gerald, and Marquis. Also six sisters, Persis Wilkie, Pearl Shoulette, Bertha Porter, Ruby Robbins, Helen Kirkby, and Josephine Fisk, died before her.

Arrangements are with the T.R. Jetty Funeral Home in Clayton.

Oxbow NY: Richard Charles Gincel Jr. age 86 of Oxbow NY passed away on March 19th 2017.

There will be calling hours for Richard from 1:00-3:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM at French Funeral home in Gouverneur, NY on Wednesday, March 22nd 2017.

Richard was born, June 10, 1930 in Passaic NJ to the late Richard C. Sr and Jessie (Dougherty) Gincel.

He went to Clifton High School, attended Fairly Dickerson University and received his MA after attending Rutgers University.

In 1953 he entered the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict as a radio operator, until his honorable discharge.

After a previous marriage, He and Jeanne Stein were wed on August 7th 1970 at Our Lady of Fatima RC in Piscataway, NJ.

Richard taught 5th grade, then served as the Principal in Lincoln Elementary and finalized his 32 years of service as principal at J.P. Stevens High School in Edison NJ.

After retiring, he and his wife moved from their Hopatcong NJ home, to Oxbow NY in 1989.

Richard was an active member of the Gouverneur Rotary Club and honored the club with 25 years of perfect attendance.

He was also an active member and officer of the Oxbow Historical Association & the Edison Retired Principal Association.

In his free time, he enjoyed completing crossword puzzles, reading, gardening, and loved to Waltz.

He and his wife also loved to travel. Together they shared their summers off, driving 46 of the 48 contiguous states, Canada, Mexico and China.

Surviving Richard; his wife, Jeanne, of Oxbow NY, his two sons: Richard Edward Gincel of Tampa Florida, Richard Charles Gincel III of Smyrna TN, his four married daughters: Debbie Lyn & Bobby Langford, Atlanta GA, Gretel Ida & Robert Fowler, Oxbow NY, Heidi Jeanne & T.J. Jannasch , Tuckerton NJ, Sherry Lee & David LeBarron, Tampa FL, his sister, Sally Lawler, of Massachusetts and her five grandchildren.

Bernard D. ‘Buddy’ Silsby Jr., 43, of Pulaski, died Wednesday March 15, at the James Square Health and Rehabilitation Center in Syracuse. Buddy was sadly diagnosed with stage 4 Glioblastoma(brain cancer) on March 12th, 2016. A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm on April 9th at the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams. Calling hours will precede the service beginning at 1:00pm.

A Celebration of Buddy’s life will follow the service at the American Legion Don Rounds Post 586, 10 South Main Street, Adams, NY.

Clarence L. Burnham

Funeral service for Clarence Lloyd Burnham, 64, of Kendrew Corners, will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 11:00am at the Kendrew Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Nichols and Missionary Ron Stiles officiating. Burial will be in the Kendrew Cemetery. Clarence passed away peacefully, while in the company of family on Friday, March 17, 2017 at the Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 24, 2017 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home, Canton. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Heuvelton or Renssalear Falls Volunteer Fire Departments.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Bridget Ritchie of Kendrew Corners; by a son, Reginald John Burnham and companion Sandy of Rochester; a daughter, Lindsay Marie Caudle and husband Phillip of Rochester; eight grandchildren, Isabelle and James Burnham and Mia, Quinn, Meadow, Lilly, Layla and Phillip Caudle; by step-children, James, John, Ellen, Kelly and Jennifer Green and step-grandchildren, Nevelle Murray and Cove Sequin. Also surviving are three brothers, Michael and Jeanne Burnham of Auburn; Dan and Terri Burnham of GA and Brad and Shelly Burnham of DeKalb Jct; five sisters; Carolyn and Al Nye of FL; Joyce and Harry Moulton of Renssalear Falls; Linda and George Baldwin of FL; Rhonda and John Hall of Lockport and Cindy and Joe Zollo of FL; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Burnham of GA.

Clarence is predeceased by his parents and by two brothers, Lloyd and Larry Burnham.

Clarence was born, April 16, 1952 in Gouverneur, the son of Carleton and Lois (Disharm) Burnham. He graduated from Heuvelton Central School in 1970 and from Potsdam State in 1974 with a teaching degree, focus on history. Before becoming employed as a teacher, Clarence found a love of carpentry and began working construction with Ryan Homes out of Rochester. Clarence retired in 2007 after 28 years with the company.

Clarence enjoyed farming and was a member of the Kendrew Grange and Kendrew Methodist Church. He loved being a husband, father, grandfather and friend to everyone.

PHILADELPHIA – Jeffrey J. Hill, age 53, passed away on March 18, 2017 at the Hospice Residence of Jefferson County in Watertown.

Jeff was born on June 7, 1963 in Watertown to Jack J. Hill and Linda L. (Hall) Hill. He graduated from the Indian River High School in 1982 and worked as an Environmental Field Technician for Blasland, Bouck, and Lee Environmental Engineering and Consulting Co. in Syracuse. A marriage to Julie Kent ended in divorce.

Jeff enjoyed fishing, boating and having nice cars and trucks. He liked to play and watch football and to watch NASCAR.

His survivors include his mother, Linda Hill and her companion, Ron Spicer of Philadelphia; two daughters, Jenna and Jadyn Hill of Virginia; three sisters, Judy Ann and Michael Jones of Machesney Park, IL, Jacqueline May of Evans Mills, NY, and Jody Lynn and Kevin Hofer of Pensacola, FL; and his uncle, Grant Hall of Philadelphia.

HEMET, CA. and ADAMS, NY – Thomas Adam Schaeffer, 87,

passed away Mar. 16, 2017, at Orange County Medical Center, Orange, CA., from complications of a fall and subsequent stroke. He was born Sept 29, 1929, in San Bernardino, CA.

He was predeceased by his wife Kathrine Kilby Schaeffer who died Oct. 28, 2013. He and his wife lived in the Adams, NY area for several years where he was a well-known barber. Later in life he and his wife lived for a time in Cocoa Beach, FL, Houston, TX, eventually settling and retiring in Hemet, CA.

He is survived by his oldest son Thomas Schaeffer and wife, Cheryl, of Omaha, NE.; grandchildren, Erik Schaeffer and Paige Schaeffer of Omaha, NE, Kyle Schaeffer of Canastota, NY, and Anna Schaeffer of Buda, TX.

Funeral services for Kathleen E. Baker, age 89, of 5 Atkinson Rd, Harrisville, will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at St. Francis Solanus Church on 14355 Maple St. with Rev. Mrs. Baker passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 17, 2017 at her home.

Kathleen is survived by four daughters, Darlene LaPlatney and her husband Richard, Donna Atkinson and her husband Michael, all of Harrisville, Kathie Ann Harrigan and her husband Don of Lima, and Kimberly Maine and her husband Greg of Hermon; two sons, Charles M. Baker and his wife Diane of Natural Bridge, Dennis J. Baker and his wife Jane of Lowville, NY; twenty-six grandchildren and sixty-one great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

Kathleen was born on July 30, 1927, in Jerden Falls, New York, the daughter of Edward Chartrand and Eveleen Prittie. Kathleen married Maurice H. Baker on October 14, 1948, at St. Anthony’s Church, Indian River, with Rev. Cosmos Girard officiating. He predeceased her on January 6, 2004 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

She enjoyed buying clothes, hunting and fishing, playing cards, bowling, attending mass, and spending time with her family.

Waddington: David Lee Thayer, 73, passed away on Friday evening (March 17, 2017) at the Highland Nursing Home in Massena. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2017 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home in Waddington. Burial will take place in the spring at Hermon Cemetery.

David was born on November 22, 1943 in Gouverneur, NY , the son of Arthur and Ida (Bowman) Thayer. He attended Gouverneur Schools. David went to work in Newton Falls at the Paper Mill for many years as a machine operator and loved to hunt, fish all around the North Country. He also like to frequent the Casino and enjoyed his daily trips to the diner to visit with his friends.

He is survived by his children, Penny and husband Charles Smart of Fulton, NY; David Thayer and partner Ken DellaCorte of Monroe, CT; Steven and wife Mary Thayer of Waddington, NY: Scott Thayer and companion Jessie Rabetoy of Watertown, NY; Sherie Coules of Las Vegas, NV: Michael Thayer and wife Pam of Ogdensburg, NY; many grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

He is also survived by his siblings, Barbara Backus of Hailsboro, NY; Beverley Lavare of Moria, NY: Sally Belmore of Norwood, NY; and Robert and wife Linda Thayer, Hermon, NY, many nieces and nephews.

David was predeceased by his four siblings, Richard, Paul and Kenneth Thayer, and Marylou Dukett.

Phyllis Dunk

Phyllis Dunk, 91, widow of John S. Dunk passed away at Samaritan Medical Center on Saturday, March 18, 2017 where she had been a patient for many weeks.

A memorial service will be held at the Life Church of the Nazarene, 535 Thompson Blvd., Watertown, NY on Saturday, April 8th at 4:00 pm with Reverend Walter S. MacPherson officiating. He also officiated for John S. Dunk in Belleville, NY memorial service. A calling hour will precede the service from 3-4 pm at the church.

Phyllis attended the Church of the Nazarene for decades. She contributed as a Sunday School Teacher and Wednesday Bible Study Teacher.

Phyllis was a graduate of Johnson City High School and the Binghamton City Hospital of Nursing.

Surviving are son Erik, daughter, Deborah, four grandchildren; Laurie, John III, Adam and Andrew Netto, five great grandchildren, and her sister, Esther Springer of Binghamton, NY.

Frederick F. Adderley

Frederick F. Adderley, age 93, of Watertown, passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the Hospice Residence of Jefferson County with his wife Suzanne and family by his side.

Fred was born in Antwerp, NY on April 9, 1923, son of William F. Adderley and Bertha Mae Lawton Adderley.

Fred enlisted in the U. S. Army in December of 1944 and served as a Staff Sergeant during WWII and was stationed in Japan and the Philippines and honorably discharged in the Fall of 1946. Prior to going overseas Fred joined the American Legion Post 61 - Watertown and has been a member for 72 years and a past member of the VFW Post 1400 - Watertown.

Upon returning home from overseas Fred leased a Sunoco gas station in Philadelphia, NY and ran a taxi service called Quaker Cab. He moved to Watertown and purchased a Gulf gas station on Washington Street beside the Watertown High School. In 1950 he went to work for Quick Motors Cadillac and Oldsmobile dealership for 23 years as a salesman and then as sales manager. Fred was a member of the Watertown Chamber of Commerce and during this time he purchased and resold rental properties in the Watertown area. He then opened two locations of Adderley Auto Sales on Leray Street, Watertown.

Fred played drums in high school and at one time he had his own band called “Fred Adderley and the Blue Notes.” He was a member of the Musicians Union and continued playing in various bands around the Watertown and Thousand Islands region. Most recently he enjoyed playing his drums at home and spending time with his family and friends.

Fred is predeceased by three sisters Elizabeth (Betty) Reeves Fox, Sarah (Sally) Patton Daigneau and Margaret DeJourdan.

Fred married Gladys Edathy Keen in 1944, the couple had eight children and the marriage ended in divorce. Fred is predeceased by a son, Charles Frederick. He is survived by his children Constance and Marc Davis - Burrville, Patricia MacRae - Arizona, Thomas and Eileen - Cape Vincent, J. Timothy and Karen - Watertown, John and Patricia - Alabama, Richard and Nancy - Watertown, and William and Julie - Watertown.

Fred married Suzanne Freeman Farney on November 5, 1970 at the First Presbyterian Church, Watertown and celebrated 47 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne, and two step children, Robert and Kira Farney - Florida and Michelle Snyder - Dexter.

Fred is survived by 11 grandchildren Christopher Adderley - Burrville, Richard MacRae - Arizona, Michael MacRae - Arizona, Joanne King - Watertown, Jim Adderley - Sackets Harbor, Janice Adderley - Potsdam, Michael Adderley - Watertown, Allison Adderley - NY City, Sean Adderley - Mexico, Janelle Schroy - South Africa, Nicole Adderley - Watertown, and a step-grandson Tyler Snyder - Dexter, as well as 16 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.

The funeral will be 11 am Friday, March 24th at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. Burial will be later in the spring at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Antwerp. Calling hours are Thursday, March 23rd from 4 pm – 7 pm at the funeral home.

Richard C. Frederick, 84 passed away at the Samaritan Medical Center, Saturday, March 18th where he had been a patient since March 13th.

Calling hours will be held at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, 632 State St., Watertown on Friday, March 24th from 6-8 pm. There will be no scheduled memorial service at this time.

Born in Watertown January 13, 1933 he was a son to Gordon and Marion Frederick. Richard married Esther I. Fulkerson on May 15, 1955. They operated the family farm on Sulpher Springs Road, Watertown for 40 years where they milked 400 Holstein dairy cows. In 1994 he sold the family farm and moved to Fuller Road, Adams Center. Following his retirement Richard did custom crop work and worked for Robbins Farms also cropping. He also plowed snow for Frederick Construction at the Salmon Run Mall for the next 23 years.

Surviving besides his wife, Esther are 2 sons, David and Sally, Adams Center; Donald and Kristine, Adams Center; 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one sister Joan Smith, Watertown; brother in law, Richard and Clara Fulkerson, cousin Howard Frederick and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, his daughter, Debroah (LaMark) Frederick, his brother, Gordon Frederick Jr., sister and brother in law, Shirley and Ralph Carrier, grandson, Larry Plummer, nephews Ricky Fulkerson and James Carrier.

A spring burial will be held at a later date and time to be announced.

Catherine M. Sampson, Watertown, passed away Sunday, March 19th at her residence. She was 56 years old.

Born in Antwerp August 16, 1960 she was the daughter of Edward and Sally (Forney) Sampson. She was educated locally, and graduated from General Brown High School in 1978. Following graduation, Catherine moved to North Carolina, returning to the north country in 1984.

Catherine worked with her brother at The Junction for several years. She was also a founding member and past President of Watertown’s first women’s motorcycle club “Twist of Fate.”

Surviving besides her mother, Sally Waite, is a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Lisa Sampson of Watertown; 2 nieces, Sadie Everhardt and Samantha Sampson; a nephew, Patrick Sampson; a great-nephew, Gabriel; her dog, “Hoss”; and several aunts, uncles & cousins.

Services will be held privately at the convenience of her family.
