Mary Jane Nelson - age 84, formerly of Potsdam/Parishville died June 17 at the NYS Veterans Home in Batavia NY. Arrangements are with the Garner Funeral Service. Condolences can be shared @www.garnerfh.com.

Mary is survived by her daughters,Fran and Tony Dorminy of Hawaii, Nancy and Warren Savage of Bergen N.Y. , Judy and Owen Ogle of Cordell, OK., Diane and Jerry Hayes of Parishville N.Y.

Step Children, Chris Caringi and David and Linda Nelson of Parishville. Her sisters Barbara Pagliaro of Long Island and Leita Pratt of Plattsburgh, NY.

Mary is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews that she loved dearly.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Melvin J. Nelson. Her daughter Bobbi Jo Bastedo. Her sister Grace Harriman, her brothers, Charles, Harry and Ted .

Mary was born April 28, 1933 to the late Gordon and Anna Stone Hughes.

She graduated from Potsdam High School and served her country by enlisting in the United States Air Force.

She worked as a waitress in several diners and also worked for Kinney Drugs and retiring from there. Mary was an avid bowler and also coached junior bowling leagues. She was active in her local VFW post.

She loved spending time outside gardening and going for walks and especially loved being with her family.

Her laughter and sense of humor endeared her to many folks that had the pleasure of meeting her.

David M. West, 46, of County Rte 59, Dexter passed away Wednesday evening after being stricken at home.

David was born May 21, 1971 in Watertown, the son of James and Ann Chavoustie West. He grew up in Antwerp, NY and graduated from Indian River Central High in 1989 and Jefferson Community College.

He married his wife Tammy Peabody in 2003 in Rosiere.

David worked at Car-Freshner for 5 years prior to joining NYS Corrections in 1997.

He loved boating on Lake Ontario and enjoyed snowmobiling at their camp in Barnes Corners with a large group of friends and family. Dave was a dedicated family man who was very active in taking his daughters to gymnastics and dance. He was a great cook known as the “Wing Guy”.

He is survived by his wife Tammy, two beautiful daughters Charlize and Kierstin, His parents Jim and Ann West of Chaumont, In-laws David and Keitha Peabody of Harrisville also survive. Siblings include: Kathy and Randy Gardner of Chaumont, Jeff and Annette West of Brownville, Rick and Maria West of Cherry Valley,

Illinois, Jen and Chris Scott of Chaumont and Mark and Lisa West of Dexter. Brother and sister-in-laws include: Dave and Rachel Peabody of Georgetown, Chantelle and Rusty Woods of Harrisville, Shelley and Brad Pratt of Harrisville, Diane and Donnie Thomas of Harrisville and John and Shalene Jackson of Dexter. He also has several Aunts and Uncles with 28 nieces and nephews and 15 great nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday June 27th at 11:00 am at Immaculate Conception Church of Brownville with Fr. Michael Gaffney officiating. Alexander Pircsuk

Alexander J Pircsuk, 89, died peacefully in his sleep on Father’s Day at Summit Village in Watertown. He battled Parkinson’s Disease for many years.

Alex was born April 13, 1928 in Elyria, Ohio, son of John and Mary Almasy Pircsuk. He graduated Salutatorian from Norfolk High School in 1946 with perfect attendance.

As a child of the depression, his work ethic was inspiring. Alex helped with family expenses, giving his mother part of his earnings every week. As a youngster, he mowed lawns at church and delivered newspapers. At the age of 12, he was bagging and delivering groceries for The Grand Union after school. He could be found making malted milkshakes at Tiernan’s ice-cream parlor if he wasn’t working at the grocery store. He was part of a summer crew that worked on the Norfolk dams on the Raquette River. In the mid-40’s Alex worked nights and weekends as the motion picture projector operator at the Empress Theater.

After graduation he worked as the Assistant Paymaster and Cost Accountant at St. Regis Paper Company in Norfolk until he joined the United States Army in 1950. He was stationed in Germany where he received the Army of Occupation Medal.

He married Eva Mae Steinburg on December 6, 1952. They had three children. After her death, he married Dawn A. Grant on December 4, 1965.

Alex had a 31 year career at ALCOA in Massena, rising to the position of Payroll Supervisor. He helped move the payroll process from manual records to IBM computers. In the 1970s Alex and his son ran a privately owned wholesale warehouse as a distributor and installer of ALCOA business products. He built and supervised the operation of AJ’s Sub Shop in an apartment building he owned and renovated in downtown Norfolk. Years later he leased the building to the U.S. Post Office.

Alex retired from ALCOA in 1980 and settled in Florida for 30 years, spending summers in the North Country. While retired, he held many part-time jobs. He sold real estate, worked as a butcher, delivered mail, worked at a storage facility and was employed by a funeral home.

He returned to Northern New York in 2010, residing in Syracuse before moving to Ives Hill Retirement Community and Summit Village in Watertown.

Alex was a communicant of The Church of the Visitation in Norfolk serving the church as an altar boy and later as President of the Holy Name Society. He was known for his Hungarian cabbage roll dinners. In Florida he was a member of the Elks and the American Legion. He enjoyed carpentry, cooking and hosting gatherings of family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dawn Grant Pircsuk, and two daughters, Cathy Pircsuk and James Burr of Watertown and Mary Clary of Hannawa Falls; three sisters, Julia and Pat McArdle of Los Gatos, CA, Mary and Jack Maroney of Potsdam and Joanie and Chris Hastings of Morley.

A son, John (2014), and a sister, Irene (Edie) Laramay, died before him. He is also survived by grandchildren Bernard J Clary, King of Prussia, PA, Jeremy Burr of Indianapolis and Laurel Burr of Miami.

There will be a graveside service at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with DL Calarco Funeral Home Inc. Condolences may be made to www.dlcalarco.com.

Contributions in Alex’s memory may be made to his son’s scholarship, which is awarded annually to a Norwood-Norfolk senior.

Mrs. Rogene Anne Brown McGraw, age 73, of Carrollton, Georgia passed away on Thursday morning, June 22, 107 at her residence. She was born December 20, 1943 in Potts Damn, New York, the daughter of the late Fredrick Brown and Velma Alice Dewey Brown. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Brown. Survivors include her husband, John C. McGraw of Carrollton, Georgia; sons: Mark Allen Cheney of Douglasville, Georgia, and Kirk John Cheney of Winston, Georgia: daughter, Jeri Sheffield of Carrollton, Georgia; sister, Shirley Burge of North Lawrence, New York; seven grandchildren; four great, grandchildren; and one great, great, grandchild. CARTHAGE – Shirley B. Sullivan, 77, of Roberts Road, passed away Thursday evening, June 22, 2017 at her home, under the loving care of her family and Lewis County Hospice.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 26, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at First Mennonite Church, New Bremen, with Ed Steckly, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Calling hours are Sunday, June 25, 2017 from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Charles; five sons, Michael and Joyce Sullivan; Jeffrey Sullivan; Kevin and Amy Sullivan; Gary and Kristy Sullivan; Scott and Sandra Sullivan, all of Carthage; her brothers, Larry and Helen Brouty of Long Pond; Thomas and Susan Brouty of Sackets Harbor and Florida; Donald and Elaine Brouty of Castorland; Gerry and Janet Brouty of Croghan; Patrick Brouty of Romania; a sister, Betty DuFlo of Soft Maple; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one on the way; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by a brother, Richard Brouty; and a brother-in-law, Thomas DuFlo.

Shirley was born on November 8, 1939 in Lowville, a daughter of the late Maynard J. and Ona C. Fleming Brouty. She graduated from Beaver River Central School in 1957. Shirley worked in the office at the Latex Fiber Mill prior to her marriage. On June 6, 1959, she married Charles F. Sullivan at Beaver Falls Evangelical United Brethren Church with Rev. Stuart McCleary, officiating. Mrs. Sullivan continued to work at Latex Fiber for a year after the couple was married. Together with her husband, they purchased Charlie’s parent’s dairy farm on the Roberts Road in Carthage. The couple owned and operated the dairy farm until it was taken over by their son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Joyce Sullivan. Shirley worked as an Election Inspector in the Town of Denmark for many years, where she had also served as Tax Collector. Shirley served on Copenhagen Central School Board of Education for many years.

Shirley enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading, tractor pulling, traveling with friends,

and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Merial Jewett

WATERTOWN- Merial Lyng Jewett, 91, of NYS Route 3, Watertown, NY, passed away early Thursday morning, June 22, 2017 at her home, under the loving care of her family.

A funeral Mass will be said at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Watertown, with Rev. Jonas Tandayu, MSC, officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery. Calling hours are from 4 – 7 p.m. on Monday, June 26, 2017 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., 5702 Waters Road, Lowville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Black River Ambulance Squad, 121 LeRay Street, Black River, NY 13612; or to the Croghan Fire Department, P.O. Box 405, Croghan, NY 13327.

She is survived by her two children, Katrina and James Salmons of Watertown; Patrick J. and Shari Lyng of Croghan; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, John F. Lyng; her second husband, Wallace Jewett; and by a brother, Emerson Yoder, Jr.

Merial was born on November 29, 1925 at home in Toy Town, Beaver Falls, NY, a daughter of the late Emerson Z. and Veronica Briggs Yoder. She graduated from Beaver Falls High School in 1943. Merial worked as a telephone operator during World War II. On May 12, 1947, she married John F. Lyng at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Croghan. Merial worked as a lunch monitor at Lowville Academy, and together with her husband owned and operated Lyng’s Mobil in Lowville for 17 years. The couple moved to Watertown in 1975. Mr. Lyng died on June 26, 1988. She later married Wallace Jewett. Mr. Jewett died April 5, 1999.

Merial was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a former communicant of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lowville, a member of St. Therese’s Guild and Christian Women of Watertown.

She enjoyed sewing, knitting, cooking, and baking. Merial enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved holiday get togethers with her family.

Michael A. Costello, 69, 87 E. Church St. , Adams, NY, passed away June 22, 2017 at his home.

Mike was born December 15, 1947 in Syracuse, NY, a son of John A. and Mary Grace O’Hara Costello. He graduated from Central Tech High School and Jefferson Community College with an associate’s degree in 1969. Mike was a kitchen designer with White’s Lumber, retiring in 2010.

Mike was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, Henderson Fish and Game Club and Big Brook Hunting Club. He enjoyed herbal gardening, hunting, fly fishing, fly tying, playing guitar and as an artist, he enjoyed drawing and painting.

Surviving are a son, Jason (Katelyn) Costello, Mannsville, two daughters, Melisa Allison, Adams, Sarah Costello, Liverpool, a brother Peter Costello, Syracuse, a sister, Cappy (Ted) Cole, Liverpool, five grandchildren, Teagan Costello, Traigh Costello, Jayden Allison, Iris Costello, Brooklynn Costello, several nieces and nephews. A brother Kevin Costello died in 2002.

St. Regis Falls - Madge S. Arcadi, 96, passed away peacefully Thursday evening, June 22, 2017, at the Alice Center with her family at her side. Arrangements are entrusted with the Hammill Funeral Home in St. Regis Falls.

Madge was born on November 16, 1920 in Dickinson, daughter of the late William and Effie (LaVoy) Hewitt. She married Peter D. Arcadi in Massena on May 20, 1939, sharing their love for 58 years. Madge was a waitress at various restaurants in the North Country, worked at ALCOA in Massena as a Timekeeper; operated Arcadi’s Restaurant/Bar for 35 years with her husband; and was a Rural Letter Carrier in St. Regis Falls for many years. She was a member of the Rural Letter Carrier‘s Association, McCavanaugh Pond Club and the St Regis Falls Sportsmen’s Club. Madge was a kind, generous person, with unmatched devotion to being a homemaker and had an unending love for her family.

Surviving Madge are her children; Darleen and Lee Roscoe of Dickinson Center, Harry Arcadi of St. Regis Falls, Donna Boulds of St. Regis Falls, Frederick Arcadi of Syracuse, Peter J. and Susan Arcadi of St. Regis Falls and Frank V. and Mary Arcadi of St. Regis Falls, 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 2 great great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter, her parents, sisters: Florence Bennet, Shirley Trim, and Mayfred Phelps, brothers: Earl, Clifford, and Herbert Mashtare, Donald, and Dewey Hewitt, daughter-in-law, Janice Arcadi and son-in-law, Lawrence Boulds.

Private services will be held at the convenience of her family.

Marion V. Exelby, age 85, passed away on June 11, 2017 in Jacksonville, FL.

Marion was born on September 19, 1931 in Lisbon, NY, the daughter of the late Robert and Laura Black. Marion spent the majority of her life as a housewife and raising her four children. She also worked as a greeter and a fitting room attendant at Walmart in Jacksonville, FL and Charlotte, NC. She completed her career working at Kmart in Watertown, NY. On February 24, 1951, Marion married Lloyd Exelby in Saranac Lake. Marion and Lloyd were longtime residents of Jefferson County until they moved to Florida to be closer to their daughters in 2010.

Marion is survived by her loving husband, Lloyd, Jacksonville, FL; four children, Debbie (Keith) Kelly, Jacksonville, FL; Sandy Exelby, Jacksonville, FL; Bill (Trudy) Exelby, Roxboro, NC; and Dale (Kathy) Exelby, Theresa, NY. She also leaves behind two granddaughters: Stacy and Brittany, nine grandsons: William, Chris, John, Nick, Cody, Chad, Bill, Justin, David and several great grandchildren.

Marion will be remembered for being a wonderful, loving, wife, mom and grandma. She will be forever missed.

Audrey Miles

Audrey Joyce Miles, 86, of Sandy Creek passed away June 13, 2017 after a long illness, with her children by her side. Joyce was born in Queens, NY to James Hopkin (born in Glasgow, Scotland) and Eileen Vollick (born in Wiarton, Ontario). Her mother was the first licensed female pilot in Canada. Joyce loved adventure too. At age 76 she went sky diving!

After high school and a brief career in NYC, Joyce attended SUNY Oswego to become a teacher. There she met her husband of 55 years, Denver Miles of Sandy Creek. (He passed in 2007.) They settled in Lacona and raised four children: James Miles of Fayetteville, Denise Yerdon (Stuart) of Lacona, Randy Miles (Donna) of Oswego, and Martha Lawrence of Sandy Creek.

Joyce taught 4-6th grades in the Sandy Creek School District for 34 years. She was very active in the school community, and was instrumental in faculty socializing events. Many students had the privilege of having her as a teacher, including her four children.

In addition to enjoying their cottage on Sandy Pond, the family loved to travel across the USA and Canada in their pick-up truck camper. They even went to Alaska and came back with two Husky puppies! They also cherished their many trips to Stowe, VT and Hilton Head, SC.

In 1971 Joyce and Denver bought the old church at the corner of Routes 3 and 15. Joyce turned it into the well-known and loved country store, The Church Mouse. She truly enjoyed her time there, visiting with both new and return customers, many of whom became her friends.

Joyce was very active in her community. She donated blood through the American Red Cross routinely for over 40 years, and also volunteered with NOCA for many years. Recently, she was very involved with the Coterie Club, and the Sandy Creek/Lacona History Center.

And of course, Joyce loved the company of her 4 children, 10 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. Her home was the center of family holidays, Sunday dinners and special occasions for many years. All who knew her loved her spark, warmth, and sense of humor. Joyce was a very kind and generous person. She loved people and loved to have a good time.

Besides Joyce’s immediate family, surviving her are: her sister Eileen Jean Barnes (John) of Bayside, NY and their children, Aunt Audrey Hopkin (age 99) of Charlottesville, VA, and numerous cousins in the United States and Canada.

Joyce loved her many pets over the years, especially her last dog, a yellow lab, Wertha (14). In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Joyce may be made to: United Friends of Homeless Animals, 432 Centerville Rd., Richland, NY 13144. A Celebration of Life service and reception will be held at Sandy Pond later this summer.

Shirley M. Traynor

Shirley Marie Traynor passed away comfortably at her home in Long Lake, surrounded by her loving family, on June 22, 2017 following a brief illness.

Born on September 30, 1931 in Adams, NY she was the eldest of five children born to Ross and Marie (McIntosh) Wagner. She graduated from Adams Central School in 1949 as Valedictorian. She received her BA at SUNY Albany and her Master’s in Education from SUNY Plattsburgh.

She taught for over 30 years at several schools including Brasher Falls, Schroon Lake, Edwards, Newcomb and Long Lake Central School.

Shirley was married to James Traynor from June 28, 1958 until June 25, 1990 and Lewis Wright from October 26, 1998 to June 25, 2006. Both husband’s predeceased her.

Survivors include several children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one brother, one sister and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley was also predeceased by one son, one daughter, one brother and one sister.

Shirley was active in her church, St. Henry’s, and many volunteer organizations including Hospice. She donated faithfully to several charities and was involved in packaging Christmas boxes for children overseas, supporting an Indian nation of children.

She particularly loved reading, knitting, jigsaw puzzles and socializing with her girlfriends.

In keeping with Shirley’s wishes, there are no calling hours scheduled.

A memorial service will be conducted at a date and time to be announced.

Rose M. Shearman

Rose Marie Shearman, 86, passed away Saturday, June 24th at Hospice at Ellis Farm, Watertown where she has resided since April. Rose was born March 29, 1931 in Theresa, the daughter of Harry and Ruth Meeks Cox. She graduated from the LaFargeville Central School in 1948, Watertown School of Commerce and Jefferson Community College. In 1949, Rose began her career working for Mayor Henry Hudson. Further employments were Merrill Bigness & Taylor, Attorneys-at-Law, the Hon. George G. Inglehart, Watertown City Court Judge, and left in 1968. In 1968-1970, she was employed at Bomax, 1970-1973, Wager Construction, 1973-1976, Gould, Inc. 1973-1976, and the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office as a Confidential Secretary 1976-1991. In 1991, she retired from the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. She was a long-time active member of the National Secretary’s Association.

Rose married Vernon Staie in 1951. That marriage ended in divorce. She re-married Robert Shearman, who passed away in 1972.

Rose enjoyed camping, reading, knitting and crocheting, music and her beloved dogs. She loved spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by a son, Dennis (Debbie) Staie of Theresa; son-in-law, Terry Towe of Morristown; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Joseph) King of Watertown, and Erik Staie and his companion, Amber Polk of Theresa, and Adam Staie; four great grandchildren, Katelynn Goyette of Watertown, Aleigh and Carly Staie of LaFargeville, and Athan King of Watertown. Also surviving is her long-time companion, Joseph Edus of Brownville.

She is predeceased by her husband, Robert Shearman and a son, Richard Staie, who passed away on 7/6/2016.

Calling hours will be on Friday, June 30th at 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with a memorial service at Noon. Immediately following memorial, burial will be at the Grove Cemetery in LaFargeville. Waddington: Sally J. Whalen of Tiernan Rd. passed away Saturday afternoon, (June 24, 2017) at her home surrounded by her loving family and Hospice. Arrangements are entrusted to the Phillips Memorial Home in Waddington.

Ivan R. Fowler, 78, of Adams, died Thursday June 22, 2017 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm Thursday June 29 at the Lorraine Methodist Church, with Pastor Dewey Stewart, pastor of the Watertown Baptist Temple, officiating. Burial will be at a later time.

Calling hours will be 6-8 pm Wednesday June 28 at the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams.

Born February 27, 1939 in Rodman, son of Floyd J. and Genevieve I. (Powers) Fowler, he graduated from Mannsville Manor High School.

Ivan owned and operated his own farm for several years, as well as a bar in Adams and in Lorraine. He also worked for the Jefferson County Highway Department, the Adams Empire Livestock Cattle Sale Barn, was the Lorraine Highway Superintendent from 1972-1974, and the Town of Lorraine Highway Department until his retirement.

He married Joan Overton on August 26, 1961. The marriage ended in divorce.

He later married Colleen Whiting of Adams on July 17, 1993 in the Sandy Creek United Methodist Church. Following their marriage the couple lived in Lorraine and later moved to Adams Center.

Surviving besides his wife Colleen, are four sons, Steven (Nancy), Lorraine, Chris (companion Eva Marshall), Zephyr Hills, FL, Ivan Jay and Nason, both of Adams; three daughters Mindy Fowler (companion Corey Carney), Mya Fowler and Ivy Carey, all of Adams; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; four brothers Floyd (Tom), Robert (Phyllis), Perry and Karl (Pamela) Fowler; and one sister Irene Erickson; and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by a son Bryan Fowler who died in 2015, a sister Barbara Audibert and a brother Clarence Hammond.

Ivan was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved being in the woods. He cut firewood, woodworking, enjoyed going to auctions and collecting treasures, loved to garden, especially raising potatoes.

Mostly though he enjoyed being around his family and attending church.
