Clara Rose “Clare” Bresee

NORFOLK— Funeral Services for 75 year old Clara Rose “Clare” Bresee, a resident of 2 South Street, Norfolk, will be held Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 12 noon at the United Methodist Church in Norfolk with Rev. Carl Chamberlain presiding. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norfolk on Friday from 4-7 p.m. Mrs. Bresee passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Clare is survived by her husband of 56 years, Lloyd “Red” Bresee, Norfolk; her two sons, Mike and Kate Bresee, St. Augustine, FL and Steve and Tammy Bresee, Grand Island, NY; a brother, Charles Bellinger, Massena and two sisters, Luella Bellinger, Massena and Muriel Bellinger, Norwood as well as several nieces and nephews. Clare was pre-deceased by two sisters, Iris Newtown and Katherine Herne.

Born in Gloversville, NY on February 10, 1942 to the late Earl and Elsie McLain Bellinger, Clare graduated from High School and married Lloyd “Red” Bresee on November 11, 1961. Clare was a devoted homemaker and community leader, managing Millers Pharmacy in Norfolk for many years, Clare was one of the first volunteers to work for Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley, volunteering for over 20 years and was instrumental in starting the Norfolk Methodist Church’s Meals on Wheels and the Whistle Stop Thrift Shop. Clare was a communicant of the Norfolk United Methodist Church and loved cooking, spending time with family and friends and just helping others out. Memorial Donations in Clare’s memory can be made to the Norfolk United Methodist Church, Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley or to any under privileged children or seniors organization. WANAKENA – Sandra “Sandy” K. Conklin, age 70, of Wanakena, passed away on November 26, 2017.

Sandy was born on January 20, 1947 in Star Lake to Pauline (McBroom) Hamele and the late Keith Hamele. She graduated from the Clifton-Fine Central School and earned her Associate Degree from Morrisville College.

Sandy loved her Wanakena community and took great pride in making it better for everyone. She was an involved member of the Wanakena Historical Association, the Wanakena Cemetery Association, vastly helped with the rebuilding of the Wanakena Footbridge and was a member and former Treasurer of the Western Adirondack Presbyterian Church. She was the site manager of the Food Program for the St. Lawrence County Office of the Aging. Sandy also adored her grandkids and loved spending time with them.

Her survivors include her mother, Pauline “Polly” Hamele; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dawn and Gregg Simon, Becky and Jeff Partridge; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Dick and Jeanne Hamele, and Donald Hamele; five grandchildren, Zachary, Jacob, Meredith, Michael and Nicole; a niece, M.J. Hamele; and cousins, Darryl, Ann and Mary.

Sandy is predeceased by her father, Keith Hamele and a cousin, Debbie.

Claire M. Farrell, 90, formerly of Clayton passed away Thursday, November 30, 2017, at Samaritan Summit Village, Watertown.

Claire Marie Farrell was born in Watertown, NY to Linus and Beatrice LaClair Green on November 19, 1927.

She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Francis Farrell; her 7 children and their spouses: Eileen Farrell and Sylvester Zienkiewicz, Brian Farrell, Dan Farrell, Patrick Farrell, Neale and Mary Farrell, Michael and Dana Farrell, and Tara and John Donohue; and her grandchildren: Meghan and Zak Sharif, Jonathan Farrell, Brennen Farrell, Siobhan Donohue and Ciara Donohue. Claire was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Sue Farrell.

Claire was an avid reader and spent many years volunteering at the Clayton library She loved to garden and took great pride in her beautiful annual flower gardens each year.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton on Sunday, December 3, from 2 - 4PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, December 4, at 11AM at St. Mary’s Church with Rev. Arthur J. LaBaff, pastor, presiding and burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Francis “Chisky” Perry Sr.

Francis “Chisky” Perry Sr., 83, peacefully returned to his heavenly home on December 1, 2017, surrounded by his loving family, following a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.

Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, December 3, 2017 from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at the Phillips Memorial Home in Massena. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 4, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Sacred Heart Church in Massena. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Massena.

Chisky was born to the late Salvadore and Mary (Marando) Perry, proud Italian immigrants, on November 28, 1934. He graduated from Massena High School in 1953, where he was a star football player and wrestler. He was a member of the 1951 and 1952 Massena High School Hall of Fame Football Team. From 1954 until 1957 he proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

In 1959 he married Marian Beaudoin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Massena, NY. Together they had 6 children. Marian went to the Lord March 3, 1993. On April 1,1995 he married Marie Chuisano from Brooklyn NY. He was a faithful member of St. Mary’s and later Sacred Heart Catholic Church along with his wife Marie. He was a member of the American Legion Post #79.

Francis was employed by General Motors for 32 years as a Journeyman Machine Repairman and a proud member of the UAW Local 465 where he served as a Skilled Trades Committeeman. His love of learning also helped him become a NYS Certified Master Mechanic from Brockport University.

Chisky was blessed with a large and loving family. Together with Marian, he helped raise his children with patience, discipline and humility. He taught his children faith in God, the value of family, honesty, and hard work. He was a kind and generous man and loved by all who knew him.

In addition to his devotion to his family, his love of the outdoors was incredible. He taught this love of nature to his children and grandchildren through the many camping trips they took as a family. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He had a great love for hunting at Slush Pond, Barnum Pond, Jenkins Mountain and Southern Tier, not just with his brothers and hunting buddies, but with his son and best friend Frank Jr. He took several trips to St Ann Du Lac in Canada for Trout fishing. He was also a great bowler, and enjoyed his league bowling well into his 70’s. Then there was golfing. He loved to golf with his brothers, his son, sons in law and as time went on, his grandsons. Chisky loved playing cards, with his brothers, his wife, his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Marie; his children, Debra (Cristen) Harlander, Camden NY, Rosaline (Keith) Smith, Odenton MD, Frances (Allen) Oakes, Chittenango NY, Francis (Gretchen) Perry Jr, Virginia Beach, VA and Tammy (Jim) Hewitt, Fayetteville NY; 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Micky, Clovis CA, Ella, and Maryjane, Massena NY, his brother, Victor (Ollie) Perry, John (Yvette) Perry also of Massena; his sisters in law, Marge Perry, Georgette Perry, Carol Perry, Debbie Perry and brother in law Dominic Trimboli. He also has many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Francis was predeceased by his wife of 33 years, Marian, his son Edmond, his brothers Salvatore, Joseph, Anthony and Robert; his sisters Rosaline, Annie, and Betty.

Sally Ann Hadley

Sally Ann Hadley, 82, of 24009 Pennock Road, died Thursday, November 30, 2017 at the home of her daughter where she has resided for two years.

Sally was born on June 19, 1935 in Glenfield, the daughter of the late Hubert and Grace (Wordell) Sweitzer. She graduated from West Carthage High School in 1953. She married Gerald H. Hadley on October 16, 1954 at the Woolworth Memorial Methodist Church in Great Bend with Rev. Robert E. Wright officiating. Gerald, a former employee of the Crown Zellerbach Corp. died on December 7, 2002. Sally was a homemaker and she bowled for several years.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands: Linda and Kevin Thomas of Great Bend and Becky and Mark Grau of Carthage, 2 Granddaughters; Jerilyn Steria and Pamela Black, one sister: Nancy Fahsel of Florida, a brother: Dale Sweitzer of Central Square and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by two daughters Jerilynn Rae and Krista Joy Hadley.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, December 4 at Maple Hill Cemetery, Rutland with Rev. Tracy Cook officiating. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.

Theodore Goolden

Theodore “Ted” Goolden, 89, passed away peacefully at home, 149 Simms Rd. under the care of Hospice. Per his wishes, there were no services following cremation.

Ted was born April 14, 1928, the son of Grace and Marvin Goolden. He attended school in Canton School district and owned and operated “Goolden’s Plumbing and Heating” business.

Ted is survived by his wife Beverly and son Darin. He is also survived by sisters Jackie Innes-Brown and Betty Mattice, daughter in law Pat and many grandchildren.

Ted is predeceased by his son Gary and daughter Kathy. He is also predeceased by a sister Alice and brothers Judson, Merrill, Vern, Darrell, Ronnie and Lloyd.

Ted was always an avid golfer and hunter.

Helen E. Liola, 94, of 943 State St., died peacefully Thursday, November 30, 2017 at her daughter’s home where she has resided since 2001.

Helen was born on August 21, 1923 in Carthage, the daughter of the late Antonio and Tomasina (DiLaura) Cocuzzoli. She was a 1940 graduate of Augustinian Academy. She married John P. Liola on June 16, 1945 at St. James Church in Carthage with Rev. Egan officiating. John died on May 7, 2001. Helen operated Tony’s Restaurant in Carthage together with her family from 1933 until 1996. Her grandson continues in the family tradition today by operating Liola’s Pizzeria in Carthage.

Helen was a lifelong Yankees fan and loved watching sports, especially Syracuse basketball and old movies.

She is survived by one daughter and her husband: Maryann and Malcolm Wetmore of Carthage, two grandchildren; Jacolyn Wetmore of Annapolis, MD and Jay Wetmore of Carthage, several nieces and nephews and her beloved pets, Godiva and Giada. She is predeceased by her brother, Dewey Cocuzzoli and a sister, Elvina Keller.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, December 5 at St. James Catholic Church with Rev. Donald A. Robinson, Pastor officiating. Entombment will be in St. James Cemetery, Carthage. Visitation will be held privately by the family. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home.

Edna A. Rice, 100, formerly of Theresa, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at Samaritan Summit Village, Watertown.

Edna was born on Wellesley Island September 26, 1917, daughter of William H. and Hattie M. Sovey Gould. She attended Clayton schools. On October 12, 1940 she married Leland P. Rice in the parsonage of Natural Bridge Methodist Church with Rev. Albert Walker officiating. Leland died September 18, 1992.

Edna is survived by her daughter, Marjorie A. Barker, Adams; two sons and their wives, Gordon L. and Elizabeth, Powhatan, VA and Daniel W. and Michelle, Redwood; four grandchildren, three foster grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Along with her husband, Leland, Edna was predeceased by her five brothers, Charlie, Harry, Frederick, Floyd, and Gerald Gould, and her two sisters, Hazel Sheley and Gladys Eckert.

She was a self-employed hairdresser in Theresa for 25 years, living in Theresa from 1950 to 2001. She then lived in Evans Mills and Adams before moving into Summit. Edna was a very active member of Depauville Order of the Easter Star and served as its Matron on two separate occasions. At the age of 80, she learned to swim.

Graveside services in St. Lawrence Cemetery, town of Cape Vincent, will be held at a time and date to be announced in the spring of 2018. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton.

Alan W. Vail passed away on November 29, 2017, at the age of 71. He was born in Binghamton, NY, spent 20 years living full-time in Cape Vincent, N.Y. and moved to Vero Beach, Florida in 2016. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Jack and Alice Vail as well as a brother, Steve. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Jennifer (Lauder), his children, Ingrid Stubbs, Scott Lauder Strazik (Jennifer Schannault) and Russell Vail (Michelle), 8 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and his beloved Cockapoo, JC. Survivors also include siblings Jack D. Vail, Walter W. Vail and Susan (Vail) Swope.

He attended Binghamton (Central) High School and then graduated from Laurel Crest Prep school. He studied business at the University of Denver and graduated with a BSBA from Southampton College.

Following college, he worked at Garrett Buchanan Paper Company in Philadelphia, then became a General Manager at Seneca Paper Co. in Binghamton, prior to taking on the role of V.P. of Sales and Marketing at Officenter, Inc. He then “switched gears” to become a Financial Advisor and franchise owner at Ameriprise Financial, for 15 years.

Alan had a passion for learning, was an avid reader and always showed a keen interest in not only the business world, but in sports and in all people in general. His sense of humor and warmth endeared him to all who knew him. He loved boating on the St. Lawrence River as well as sailing in the Caribbean. He never tired of traveling to as many places as possible and when at home was happiest when he was working on “projects,” including completely remodeling and reconstructing their 1820 home in his “spare” time. He was never bored!

Although the last 5 years have been a struggle for Alan physically, he still loved life and his family and friends…and they loved him. He will be sorely and lovingly missed.

A “celebration of life” will be held this summer in the Thousand Islands. Edith Boni Timmerman, 85, went home to Heavenly Father on November 22, 2017, in St. George, Utah. She was born September 8, 1932, in Pinckney, New York, to Thomas Benjamin Boni and Anna Hughes Boni. Edie was known for her devotion to her family, her contagious smile, and her sparkling blue eyes.

Her first marriage in 1950 to Cecil Fred Reed ended in divorce. She married Ronald Reed Timmerman, the love of her life, on September 2, 1972, in Calcium, New York. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Washington, D. C., Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on April 8, 1978. Edie was a convert to the LDS church in 1977 and was a very active member. She served in many capacities, including Stake Relief Society President. She enjoyed researching her family history. Edie kept a daily journal for 34 years, and from her journals, family history, and contributions from family members, she published with her husband, Ron, a family history titled Baby Born. She and Ron served a mission for the church from 1990 to 1991 in the Texas Houston East Mission. She always loved serving others and was always watching out for the less fortunate.

Edie graduated from Copenhagen Central School in 1950. She was a varsity cheerleader all four years of high school. She played varsity sports and lettered. Born during the Great Depression, she was always frugal. Being raised on a farm, she was no stranger to hard work, and as a young girl she developed a great work ethic. She was a school bus driver for the South Jefferson Central School District in Adams, New York, for 11 years. She was a volunteer at Dixie Regional Hospital in St. George, Utah. Edie loved to quilt, sew, read, play the piano, dance, play bridge, and entertain; additionally, she made a scrapbook for each one of her seven children and 26 grandchildren. She also loved to play her clarinet and sing in the LDS ward choir. Edie loved people, especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was famous for her one-liners and practical jokes. Edie loved exercise, aerobics, and line dancing; she taught yoga at the St. George Senior Center for a time. Even though she was blessed with a large family, she never forgot an anniversary or birthday. At Christmas, each family member received a special gift. Edie is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Ron Timmerman, and her seven children: Cynthia Reed Allen (Charles) of Fort Ann, NY; Penny Reed Murphy, of Ogdensburg, NY; Rick Reed (Melanie) of Watertown, NY; Rusty Reed of Missoula, MT; Randy Reed (Mercy) of West Valley City, UT; Laura Reed Wilson, of Black River, NY; and Anna Lisa Reed Jackson (Brett) of West Haven, UT. She had 26 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren who remember her for the love she shared and her family reunions at Sackets Harbor, New York, on Henderson Harbor. Each one of her grandchildren correctly believed they were her favorite. She was predeceased by her three brothers: Robert, Edward, and Charles Boni; three sisters: Helen Boni Brown, Gladys Boni Gardner, and Julia Boni Flanagan; a grandson, great-granddaughter, and granddaughter. Funeral services will be held on December 9, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., at the Watertown LDS chapel, 20020 County RT. 65 Ives St. Rd. in Watertown, New York. Friends and family may call at the chapel from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be at the South Rutland Cemetery, South Rutland, New York. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Missionary Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

DEPAUVILLE — Mrs. Etta Lee Radley, 88, died Wednesday, Nov. 29th, at Carthage Area Hospital. She resided at Country Manor Nursing Home in Carthage since 2014.

Etta Lee was born August 28th, 1929, in North Carolina, the daughter of William and Florence Outz Barker Sr.

She attended Belleville schools, and graduated from the Clayton Central School.

On September 7th, 1947, she married Donald Radley at Asbury Methodist Church in Watertown. Mr. Radley died August 23rd, 2010, at age 85.

Etta Lee was a bookkeeper for Watertown Agway, retiring after many years in 1990.

She loved crocheting and needle point.

Surviving are two children, Mike of Depauville, and Carol Dufresne of Browns Corners; one son in law, Philip Zang of Richland; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a brother Thomas of Watertown; nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Linda Zang, a son in law Arthur Dufresne, and two brothers, Arthur and William, all died before her.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, December 5th, from 2-4pm and 7-9pm, at the T.R. Jetty Funeral Home in Clayton. The funeral will be held 11am Wednesday, December 6th, at the Funeral Home with Reverend Don Briant officiating.

Burial will be held at a later date in the Depauville Cemetery.

Francis M. Lobdell

Francis M. “Mahlon” Lobdell, 94, of Canton, passed away on November 30, 2017 while in the comfort of his home, while surrounded by his family and under the care of St. Lawrence Valley Hospice. Born October 10, 1923 in DeKalb Junction, he was the son of the late Richard and Anna (O’Horo) Lobdell. He graduated from Canton High School in June of 1942. Mr. Lobdell served his country in the US ARMY in England, France, Holland and Belgium from February 1942 until December 1945 during WWII.

On March 2nd, 1946 he married Doris L. Thornton. Mr. Lobdell worked at the paper mill in Sissonville, Witherbee and Whalen and at the Canton Post Office, retiring from the Postal Service on 1979. He also worked at the VFW and American Legion for years.

Mr. Lobdell belonged to the Disabled American Veterans 164, American Legion 19 of Ogdensburg, the Potsdam Elks Lodge 2074, Canton VFW Post 1234 and the Massena Amvets Post 4, all of which were lifetime memberships.

Francis is survived by his wife of 71 years, Doris; five daughters, Patricia (Jake) Jacobi of GA; Joan Lobdell of Canton; Donna (Dennis) Manchester of Massena; Carol (John) Stevens of Potsdam and Karen (Michael) Bulsiewicz of NJ; five sons, Jack Lobdell of Canton; Paul Lobdell of Vermont; George Lobdell of Canton; Raymond Lobdell of Canton and Peter Lobdell and fiancé Amy of Canton; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

He is predeceased by a son, Michael in 1968, a daughter, Mary Ellen in 1947, a brother Richard Lobdell, two sisters, Barbara Barnett and Martha Mallette and by two grandchildren.

In accordance with his wishes, his body has been graciously donated to Upstate Medical University. Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley; 6805 US Hwy 11; Potsdam, New York 13676 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Beulah L. Fernandes, 90, formerly of Adams and Brownville, died November 30, 2017, at the home of her daughter Ruth Allen, in Lawton, OK where she had lived since 2005.

There will be a funeral mass at Saint Cecilia’s Church, Adams, at 10:30 am on Wednesday December 6, with Rev. Martin Cline officiating. Burial will follow in the Saint Cecilia’s Cemetery, Henderson.

Arrangements are with the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams.

Born July 2, 1927 in Worth, daughter of John and Bessie (Weaver) O’Connor, she graduated from Adams Center High School.

She worked at M.H. Fishman Department Store in Watertown, Saint Cecilia’s Catholic Church Rectory, Adams and as a housekeeper at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Rectory, Brownville. She was also companion to Mrs. Clover Boldt Baird in Alexandria Bay for several years before retiring.

A marriage to Charles Fernandes of Copenhagen on January 28, 1951 later ended in divorce.

Surviving are three sons Charles (Jane) Fernandes, Adams, NY; Ronald Fernandes, FL, Thomas (Barbara) Fernandes, Prospect, NY; two daughters Catherine (Lynn) Nuffer, Castorland, NY; Ruth (Blake) Allen, Lawton, OK; fourteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; two sisters Carrie Kenney, Henderson, Patricia Ashford, FL; and many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by a daughter Diane Fernandes who died in 2012; five brothers Thomas, Donald, David, James and William O’Connor; and six sisters Gladys Bill, Alice Johansen, Edna Thibodeau, Mary O’Connor, Bernice Russell and Gertrude Hinman.

Beulah was a Communicant of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Brownville, and a former Communicant of Saint Cecilia’s Church and OES, Adams Center, the Busy B G’s, Brownville.

She enjoyed flower gardening.
