Lawson M. Virkler

LOWVILLE -Lawson M. Virkler, 88, of 7615 Easton Street, Lowville died on March 20, 2018 at the Lewis County Residential Care Facility where he had been a resident for a short time. Mr. Virkler, a life long resident of Lowville, was a retired funeral director.

Born December 5, 1929 in Watertown he was the son of Maurice N. and Florice Floyd Virkler. He graduated from Lowville Academy in 1948. Mr. Virkler attended Hobart College and graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalming. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy. At the time of his discharge in 1954 he was a Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class.

Following discharge from the Navy and upon the death of his father, Mr. Virkler became President of the Virkler Funeral Home, Inc., a firm that was originally founded by his father in 1926. Mr. Virkler held that position for 27 years until his retirement in 1981 at which time the business was sold. After retirement Mr. Virkler was an Assessor for the Town of Lowville from 1983 to 1993.

Mr. Virkler was a member of the Lowville Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and as a Trustee. He also served as a board member for several organizations including the former Community Purchasing Corporation, Friends of Lewis County Hospice and the Constable Hall Association. He belonged to the Lowville Masonic Lodge #134 of F&AM, the Lowville Elks Lodge, the Lowville American Legion and the Lowville Kiwanis Club.

Mr. Virkler married Carol Brown on June 22, 1974 at the Lowville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John K. Sharp officiating. He is survived by his wife Carol, a son Timothy L., his wife Mariko and their son William of Watertown; a sister Carolyn Brink of Ft. Myers Florida; a nephew Ricard Brink of Hillsbourough, NJ and niece Diana Cassi of Ft. Collins, CO and a cousin, Gretchen Heinritz, of Appleton, WI.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed boating on the St. Lawrence River and its tributaries as well as spending summers with his family at their camp on Brantingham Lake. He fondly enjoyed and remembered traveling together with his son along the Silk Road in China and Northern Pakistan in addition to visiting Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore. Mr. Virkler loved reading and history, a passion which was imparted on his son and grandson.

Calling hours will be held on Friday March 23rd from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. at the Sundquist Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Saturday March 24th at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Laurie Sponaugle, officiating. Burial will be made in the family plot at the Lowville Rural cemetery. The family has suggested memorials be directed the Lewis County Hospital Foundation, 7785 North State Street, Lowville, NY 13367.

Beryl G. Weaver

Beryl G. Weaver, 82, Dexter, went home to be with the Lord Jesus on March 20, 2018 at Samaritan Keep Home, where she had been a patient since December, 2017.

She was born August 5, 1935 in Dekalb Junction, the daughter to Rev. Herschel H. and Valentine Bohall Hutt. Beryl was a graduate of Watertown High School, Watertown School of Commerce and attended Roberts Wesleyan College where she met her husband to be. She married J. Virgil Weaver on June 8, 1957 in Syracuse where her father was pastor of the Syracuse Free Methodist Church.

She worked as a secretary for many offices in the Watertown area, NY Air Brake, Garn’s Supply and Samaritan Keep Home. She retired in 1992 as a secretary at First Presbyterian Church, Watertown.

Beryl was a member of Life Church of the Nazarene and formerly of the First Free Methodist Church, which closed in 2002. She also served in several leadership positions and committees in the churches, including Bible Study Leader, Sunday School Teacher and Steward. She with her husband served as youth directors for 20 years at the Free Methodist Church. Beryl was a part of establishing the Christian Women’s Club in Watertown, known now as Women’s Connection. She chaired the evening division of the beginning group.

For more than 25 years she had a ministry making hand-made greeting cards for family and friends. She made more than 10,000 cards. Since 1999, she was a rubber stamping demonstrator for Stampin’ Up, regularly teaching rubber stamping classes.

Beryl enjoyed her family, friends, her church, making greeting cards, reading and knitting. She was always serving and thinking of others.

She is survived by her husband, J. Virgil Weaver, her children, Martin (Maureen) Weaver, Carthage, NY; Melinda (Mike) Hagan, Newport News, VA; Timothy (Bonnie) Weaver, Helena, MT; 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings Harry Hutt, Tampa, Fla; Esther Robson, Gerry, NY; Nellie Mason, Clinton, NY and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents Beryl was predeceased by her sisters, Edna Prouty and Dorothy Wynn.

A memorial service will be held at the Life Church of the Nazarene, at a date and time to be announced.

Gary R. Leddy

Gary R. Leddy, 68, of Holkins Rd., died Monday March 19, 2018 at home.

Born on June 23, 1949 in Watertown, NY, he was a son of James R. and Helen B. Souva Leddy. He graduated from Indian River Central School in 1966.

He entered the US Navy in 1967, serving in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1970.

Gary married Judith A. Lyndacker on December 5, 1975 at the First Presbyterian Church, Lowville, NY. She died on June 5, 1993.

He was a longtime engineer at Northland Electric, Watertown, NY, and retired in 2010 when the plant closed.

Gary was an active member, representative of the executive committee and Past Commander of the Philadelphia American Legion Post No. 798. He was also an altar boy at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was a member Tom Sawyer’s Boys Club.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his parents, James and Helen Leddy, Philadelphia, NY; a son and daughter-in-law, Derek and Brenda Leddy, Philadelphia, NY; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Shannon and Scott Shaw, Croghan, NY and Tamera and Jason Hicks, Antwerp, NY; six grandchildren, Joseph Davis, India Leddy, Seth Shaw, Shaun Shaw, Amiah Hicks and Chase Hicks; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Kathleen and Richard Pike, Phoenix, NY and Rosalie and David Wadsworth, Richfield Springs, NY; a brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Sue Leddy, Philadelphia, NY; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services will be 12:30 pm Friday, March 23, 2018 at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, NY with Rev. Christopher Looby, officiating. Family and friends will gather at the Philadelphia American Legion immediately following services. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Antwerp, NY at a later date.

Calling hours will be 4-7 pm Thursday, March 22, 2018 at the funeral home.

William H. Crawford

William H. Crawford, age 78, resident of Pulaski and Altmar passed away Tuesday at the home of his daughter in Chaumont Bay. William was born April 25, 1939 in Niagara Falls, the son of William and Vera Cooper Crawford. He worked at Felix Schoeller Paper and Miller Brewery. He spent ten years in Arizona before moving back to NY in 1995.

Surviving are two sons, William H. (Janelle) Crawford III of Richlands, NC, and Jody Crawford of Sandy Creek, three daughters, Suzanne (Tom) Oderkirk of Orwell, Tammy (Mark) Shelmidine of Boylston, and Cheryl (Mark) Wilson of Chaumont Bay, three sisters, Florence Alexander of Vermont, Joan Rossman of Cicero, and Alvina Broadhurst of Mexico, grandchildren, Brian Crawford, Kayden Crawford, Keegan Crawford, Kylie Moses, Tristin Crawford, Thomas Oderkirk, Timothy Oderkirk, Jessica Blauvelt, Tricia LeBeau, Mindy Licciardello, Samantha Johnson, Richard LeBeau, Mark Shelmedine II, Dallas Crossman, Savanna Wilson, Matthew Gamel, Hannah Gamel, Darius Gamel, Shelbi-Jo Snyder and Francesca Gamel, and many great-grandchildren

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 25th at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street Pulaski with burial at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday prior to the funeral.

Nancy D. Wolfford

Nancy D. Wolfford of LaFargeville passed away Monday, March 19th at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, New York. Nancy was 78 years old.

A burial of Nancy’s ashes will take place at a Virginia cemetery following a cremation at Brookside Cemetery in Watertown, New York.

Nancy was born August 20, 1939. She was the daughter of Henry and Dorothy (Hodges) Dowling. On April 30, 1966, Nancy was married to John Wolfford. John and Nancy’s marriage resulted in five beloved children. Nancy prided herself in being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Nancy graduated from high school in Manheim, Germany. She worked as a secretary for the Virginia Beach Police Department and LaFargeville Central School, retiring from both establishments. Nancy worked at LaFargeville Central from 1991-2001. Nancy’s interests included reading extensively, crocheting, playing Farmville on Facebook, cooking, and teaching others to cook.

Surviving are her children: Hamp (Jenny) Wolfford of Ohio; Bill (Jen) Wolfford of Florida; Kat (Dan) Haro of New York; John (Beth) Wolfford of Indiana; Dorothy Wolfford (companion David Hyde) of New York; eleven grandchildren: Andy, Alexis, Sarah, Ashley, Robert, Jerrod, Jenna, Connor, Ben, Gunnar, and Cameron; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a sister, Gene Rimer of Virginia; a brother-in-law, David Wolfford and sister-in-law Bobbie Wolfford also of Virginia.

Lillian S. Williams

Alexandria Bay – Lillian S. Williams, 96, passed away early Tuesday morning at St. Joseph’s Home in Ogdensburg, where she had been a patient since November of 2017.

Lillian was born on October 13, 1921 in Auburn, Maine, the daughter of Harry and Rose Yerkes Gurwitz. She graduated from OFA in Ogdensburg, NY. She married James A. Williams on October 8, 1946 in Ogdensburg, NY. Mr. Williams passed away in June of 1977.

Lillian worked for many years as an Operator for New York Telephone in Ogdensburg and then Alexandria Bay. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, was an avid bowler and enjoyed playing BINGO.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou Williams, Alexandria Bay, her sons, Bob “Beefer” (Andree) Williams, Alexandria Bay; John (Dianne) Williams, Bedford, TX; Michael Williams, South Bend, IN; Larry (Carol) Williams, Wilkinson, IN; Tom “Augie” (Debbi) Williams, Milford, MI; and Gary “Critter” (Donna Hutton) Williams, Alexandria Bay; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Estelle Friedland, Naples, FL. A brother, Daniel Gurwitz pre-deceased her.

Calling hours will be held from 5-8 at Costello Funeral Home on Friday, March 24th. A funeral mass will be at 11:00 am on Saturday at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church with Father Doug Comstock officiating. Burial will follow at Barnes Settlement Cemetery.

Helen E. Daley

Helen E Daley, 79 of Sandy Creek passed away March 17, 2018 at University Hospital in Syracuse.

Helen was born September 6, 1938 in Rochester, NY to John and Amelia (Carter) Kane.

She worked for many years as a home health aide with Oswego County Department of Health. She had also worked at Valhaven Home in Pulaski and Mannsville and Tops Grocery Store for a time. Helen also volunteered at the Trash and Treasure Shop in Pulaski. She was an active member of the Eastern Star for over 40 years.

Surviving are two sons Ron Daley and Martin Daley, Jr. and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Martin.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday April 28, 2018 at 1:00pm at the Summerville Funeral Home. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sandy Creek.

Robert F. Caulkins

Robert F. Caulkins, 79, of 915 Ives St., Watertown, passed away March 16, 2018 at Hospice of Jefferson County at the Ellis Farm where he had been a resident.

He was born on February 16, 1939 in Adams Center, the son of Lyle F. and Marjorie (Snell) Caulkins.

He married Ginger J. Rogers on February 6, 1971 at the First Baptist Church in Watertown.

Bob was a retired member of NYS Teamsters who drove tractor trailer for various local trucking companies, including 22 years with Seaway Motor Express. He also enjoyed carpentry and had been a heavy equipment operator.

Bob and his wife enjoyed dining out, and attending concerts especially at the Turning Stone Resort Casino.

Among his survivors are his beloved wife of 47 years, Ginger J. Caulkins, their son, Robert L. Caulkins and two grandsons, Michael and Matthew. He is also survived by his four children, Cheryl (Donald) Dwyer, James (Marla) Brown, Debra Sue (Neil) Hamilton, and David Caulkins, along with several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Besides his parents he is predeceased by a son, Mark Caulkins, who died from leukemia as a young child.

Arrangements are with the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown. Per his request, the body was cremated. Visitation will be held from 3:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 24th, at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, 117 N. Massey St., Watertown, New York, followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

GLENFIELD- Edward J. Ford, 89, of Pine Grove Road, Glenfield, passed away at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, on Wednesday, March 21, 2018.

In keeping with Ed’s wishes, the funeral will be Sunday, March 25, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville, with Rev. Bruce Chapman officiating. Spring burial will be in Beaches Bridge Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. He is also survived by his late wife, Agnes’, family; Raymond and Elaine Worthington, David and Judy Worthington, Carol Worthington, Shirley Worthington, Margaret Worthington, and Norma Worthington. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Agnes, who died on December 14, 2014; a brother, Leon Ford; two sisters, Laura Graves and Ola Costello; and a special nephew, Richard T. Graves. He is also predeceased by Agnes’ brothers.

Ed was born on December 31, 1928 in Watson, NY, a son of the late Louis and Lula Shaw Ford. On April 3, 1964, he married Agnes H. Worthington at First Methodist Church in Lowville, with Rev. Roberts Mallabar officiating. Ed worked as a lineman for Gould Paper, Lyons Falls from 1945-1954 and then had four years of electrical school and worked as an electrician for IBEW Local 910, Watertown, then for E.D. Youngs, Watertown, until his retirement. He was a life member of B.P.O.E. #1605, Lowville Lodge and a member of Ball Rock Hunting Club, and Glen-Greig Fish and Game Club. He was an avid fisherman and golfer.

Mrs. Letha J. Chase

SANFORDVILLE – After a brief illness, Mrs. Letha J. Chase, 81, of Old Market Road, passed away early Thursday morning, March 22, 2018 at her home with her family by her side.

Letha was born February 20, 1937 in Potsdam, the daughter of the late Harold W. and Lena Doris (Munson) Mitchell. She attended Stockholm Rural Schools before graduating from Potsdam High School. On October 20, 1954, she married Allan R. Chase at the West Stockholm United Methodist Church.

Letha worked for a time at MH Fishman’s Department Store before starting her family. She devoted her life to raising her family and cherished the time she was able to spend with them as her home was the central hub for many family gatherings. She will fondly be remembered for her bread making, raising chickens, her love of flowers, knitting and crocheting. She also enjoyed collecting many knick-knacks especially salt and pepper shakers, lighthouses, and calendars.

Letha is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Allan; her children and their spouses, Kenneth and Jill Chase of Colton; Ellen Marie and Peter Weaver of Lake Pleasant, New York; Thomas and Sharon Chase of Norwood; and Steven Chase of Stockholm; her grandsons, Derek, Joseph, Michael, and Justin; and her great grandchildren, Tyler, Brody, Ella, Zayden, Tanner, and Tyeson. She is also survived by her sisters, Doris Hunt of Sanfordville; Kay and Ed Ramsay of West Potsdam; and Ann MacAdam of Sacramento, California; her brothers, Kenneth and Tracy Mitchell of Waddington; Mark and Kathleen Mitchell of Halifax, Massachusetts; and Ronald and Geraldine Mitchell of Canton; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Betty Cox and Carolyn Mitchell; and two brothers, Lawrence W. and James K. Mitchell.

At her request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. A celebration of her life will be held at a time to be announced.

Mrs. Alice June (Kinne) LaParr

Harrisville, NY: Mrs. Alice June (Kinne) LaParr, 85, passed away peacefully, in the comfort of her home on Thursday, March 22, 2018 while surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Hospice of Lewis County.

Alice was born December 12, 1932, the daughter of the late Elmer J. and Mary Jane (McCarthy) Kinne. She attended Watertown Area Schools and on June 25, 1949 she married Charles F. LaParr at the Church of the Redeemer in Watertown with Rev. Denny, officiating. The couple moved to Star Lake and finally to Harrisville, where they raised their seven children.

Alice worked for J. J. Newberry’s and BaJolly’s General Store in Watertown. Later she worked cleaning local businesses in Harrisville, as a cook/waitress for Kilbourn’s Hotel and for Scanlon’s Bakery, retiring in September 1994 after 12 years. Through the years, Alice enjoyed hunting, fishing, collecting rare coins, crossword puzzles and crime & detective shows. Alice also enjoyed watching her brother Bill play in the Black River Fiddlers and going to the local diner for coffee with friends. She was a member of the Owl Mountain Hunting Club with her family. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother to her large family. She had a big heart and a gentle spirit and could always make you smile.

Alice is survived by six children; Denis (Nan) LaParr, Mary (Phillip) Schmitt, Dale (Tina Kohl) LaParr, Denise (Jay) Seymour, all of Harrisville; Susan (Roger) Pierce of Carthage, Brenda (Bruce) Phillips of Leesburg, FL; daughter –in-law, Joanne LaParr of Harrisville and a brother, Bill Kinne of Brownville. Also surviving are three sister-in-law’s, Rose (Sam) Scudera of Watertown; Helen Delong of Carthage and Aleeta Crane of Newton Falls, 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her husband, Charles; two sons, Duane (Buck) LaParr and Darren William LaParr, a sister, Evelyn Randall, two brothers, John (Jack) and Charles Kinne, a great-grandson Michael Pierce, and an Aunt Edna McCarthy, whom helped raise her.

She loved us all!!

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday March 28, 2018 at the Harrisville Fire Hall from 10:00 am until the time of her funeral service at 12:30 pm, immediately followed by a luncheon at the fire hall. Burial in later spring will take place in the Harrisville Community Cemetery.

Harold William Pickering

STAR LAKE – Harold William Pickering, Sr., age 91, of Star Lake, passed away on March 20, 2018 at his son’s winter home in Florida.

His funeral Mass will be held at St. Hubert’s Catholic Church in Star Lake on Monday, June 4, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Fine. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with French Family Funeral Home.

Harold was born on October 1, 1926 in Massena to the late Leo and Agnes (Hart) Pickering. He attended the Gouverneur High School and served in the United States Navy from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946. He served on the USS Arkansas in both Theaters of WWII.

He married Dorothy “Dot” Ely on December 27, 1946 at the Herkimer First Baptist Church. Dorothy passed away on April 9, 2014. Harold worked for the Newton Falls Paper Mill for 45 years, retiring as a Coating Platform Operator.

Harold was a member of the American Legion Post 1539, St. Hubert’s Parish, and the Newton Falls Rod-N-Gun Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards.

His survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jack Faulkner of Pinellas Park, FL; his son and daughter-in-law, Harold Jr. and Nancy Pickering of Star Lake; and 2 sisters, Ethel Kinney and June Murphy. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Christina Pomerville, Harold “Billy” III, Brande DeFilippis, Shannon Paaga and Jack Faulkner and 10 great-grandchildren, Jacqueline Pomerville, Eden Faulkner, Tyler Ferris, Liam Paaga, Alexis Pomerville, Kyle and Kaden Pickering, and Bella, Lola and Seth DeFilippis.

Mr. Pickering is predeceased by 4 sisters, Margaret Cassell, Esther Farnsworth, Hazel Brickey and Beatrice Link; and his brother, Robert Pickering.

Sara E. (Sally) Weldon

Sara E. (Sally) Weldon, age 92, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at the Brookdale Home in Jensen Beach, Florida.

Sally was born on April 13, 1925, in Watertown, New York, the daughter of Alvin C. Wallace and Mildred Denny Wallace. She graduated from Watertown High School in 1943 and Syracuse University in 1948. Prior to her marriage, she was employed as a caseworker with the Children’s Division of the Jefferson County Welfare Department.

Sally married Richard T. Weldon on February 17, 1951, at Sacred Heart Church. After residing in Brownville, New York, and Darien, Connecticut, they made their home for 30 years at 321 TenEyck Street, Watertown, and enjoyed the family cottage in Chaumont during the summer months. In 1988, they purchased their home in Naples, Florida, where they resided for 18 years. Sally and her husband then resided in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and in 2006, moved to Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Sally was a volunteer at the Samaritan Keep Home for 20 years, and was later head of volunteers. She was also on the board of the Jefferson County Historical Society for many years, and was on the board of the House of the Good Samaritan - Samaritan Keep Auxiliary. She and her husband were members of Ives Hill Country Club, the Crescent Yacht Club and the Black River Valley Club for more than 30 years. She attended St. Patrick’s Church in Watertown with her family for more than 40 years.

Sally enjoyed reading, Bridge, decorating her homes, antiques, and most of all, her family. She was a kind and generous person. Sally is survived by four children and six grandchildren: Attorney Lisa Weldon, Watertown, and her daughter Marisa; Attorney Mark (Lisbeth) Weldon, Eatontown, New Jersey, and his daughters Carly and Melanie; Jonathan Weldon, West Roxbury, Massachusetts; and Alexandra (Ralph) Scott, Port St. Lucie, and her children Taylor and Victoria Soderquist and Olivia Scott.

Sally was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Richard T. Weldon, her son Scott, her sister Phyllis Wallace and her brother John Wallace.

There will be no funeral or calling hours. A memorial service is tentatively planned for July in Watertown. Burial will be in the spring in Brookside Cemetery.

Rosauro L. Espejo, 64, of Huntington St, Watertown, passed away Thursday, March 22, at home surrounded by his family.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Cleveland Funeral Home, Watertown.

He was born August 30, 1953 in Paniqui, Tarlac, Philippines the son of Carlos and Aurea Lavitoria Espejo.

Mr. Espejo joined the army in 1983 serving until his retirement in 2003. He then became a Range Control Inspector working on Ft. Drum until his retirement in 2015.

Mr. Espejo married Magdalena Estacio on November 20 in Benquet City, Philippines. He was a founding member and first president of the Filipino-American Association of Northern NY, he loved gardening and doing car repair and home improvements, he especially loved his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Surviving besides his wife, Magdalena, is his mother, Aurea Espejo; four children, Chickitita and her husband Adrian Manalo, Sacramento, CA, Rosauro Espejo Jr, Tennessee, KY, Diana Espejo and her fiancé Rich Reganilli, Viet Nam, and Jay Pee Espejo, Watertown; seven siblings, Netito Espejo, Jacksonville, Fl, Sixto Espejo, Jacksonville, FL, Jack Espejo, Queens, NY, Filipina DeLeon, Queens, NY, Raul Espejo, Daly City, CA, Girlie Virgino, Queens, NY, and Ramon Espejo, Queens, NY; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and three close friends, June Plandes, Paul Solar, and Luis Boyet Luce.

A Funeral mass will be said Tuesday, March 27 at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 129 Winthrop St, Watertown, with the Rev Michael Giblonski officiating. Calling hours will be Saturday, March 24, 2-7 PM, Sunday March 25, 2-7 PM, and Monday march 26, 2-7 PM at Cleveland Funeral Home, 404 Sherman St, Watertown.

Military honors will be held Monday at 4:00 PM at the Cleveland Funeral Home.

Battalion Chief David M. Lachenauer, 61, of 28343 Lotts Grove, Three Mile Bay, passed away peacefully at his home overlooking Lake Ontario on March 23, 2018 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County and surrounded by his loving family and dearest friends.

Chief Lachenauer was one of many First Responders to the World Trade Center on September 11th where he helped work The Pile for three days before returning home. He was there during the worst, risking his life in hopes of saving others. Sadly, Chief Lachenauer’s reward for these heroic efforts was to contract cancer which he has battled for more than a year.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 26 at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, 117 N. Massey St., Watertown.

The Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 27 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in the spring.

He was born on June 27, 1956, in Watertown, son of George and Helen (Gartland) Lachenauer. From an early age he worked for the Watertown Daily Times and continued into his early adulthood. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1975 and as a proponent of lifelong learning earned an associates degree from Corning Community College in 2000 and graduated from Executive Fire Officer School in Maryland.

Following high school, David was a driver for Anchor Motor Freight on Wesley Island. On April 29, 1985 David joined the City of Watertown Fire Department and became a firefighter. He would go on to be promoted to Fire Captain and retired on March 5, 2018 as Battalion Chief. He was the former Treasurer and Union President of Local 191, Vice Chairman of the Local Emergency Planning Committee, as well as being instrumental in bringing Hazmat equipment and training to our local area.

He was the former Chief of Three Mile Bay Fire Department and member for many years as well as an EMT for Three Mile Bay and Dexter Ambulance Squads.

He worked for Atlantic Inland in Watertown as a building inspector and was a Code Enforcement Officer throughout the north country for many years.

He was an avid deer and duck hunter, loved boating and fishing, reading about history, and most of all spending time with his grandchildren.

Among his survivors are his wife, Cindy L. Lachenauer, his four children and their spouses, Jason R. and Heather West, Clayville, NY, Sarah M. and Steven Burke, Ithaca, Jamie L. and Michael Jesmer, Watertown, Laura M. Lachenauer and her fiancé A.J. Durham, Adams, four grandchildren, Tyler, Brienna, Garrett and Liam, three brothers and their wives, Charles and Karen Lachenauer, Gloversville, NY, Edward and Sheryl Lachenauer, Three Mile Bay, Michael and Christine Lachenauer, Chaumont, many nieces and nephews.

MASSENA — Mrs. Sharon L. Meldrum, 76, a longtime resident of Chase Street and Liberty Ave, peacefully passed away Saturday morning, March 24, 2018 at Massena Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

She had recently been under the loving care of the Highland Nursing Home.

Friends may call Tuesday 4-7:00 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held on Wednesday at at time to be announced. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Calvary Cemetery.

George H. Barney Jr.

George H. Barney, Jr., 90, of County Rte. 75, Adams passed away Wednesday, March 14th at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Mike Morgan, where he had been staying the past ten months.

A private graveside service will be held for family at a later time. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Town of Henderson, New York. There are no calling hours. Contributions may be made to www.tidelandshospice.org.

George was born March 7, 1928 in the Town of Henderson, a son to George and Alta Barney. He attended Union Academy of Belleville School. After school, he worked different farming jobs and at a local freight house. Following a stint in the United States Army, he took over the family farm. He was a self-employed farmer for many years.

George married Betty Mae Reidell on July 15, 1950. In his retirement years, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, making bread with his bread machine, and building his own golf course and mazes for his grandchildren. He also enjoyed traveling with Betty throughout the United States to include Hawaii, the Grand Canyon, and Death Valley. The couple was married close to 64 years before George was predeceased by his wife on April 30, 2014.

George is survived by two daughters, Rose Marie McDermott, Watertown, NY and Debra (Mike) Morgan, Surfside Beach, SC. Five grandchildren, Jarrod (Whitney) and Marisa McDermott, Joshua and Joel Knowles, Lissa (Todd) Eckert. Two great granddaughters, Delilah Knowles and Lucy Belle Eckert, and two step great grandchildren, Aubrie and Landyn.

George was predeceased by his two siblings, Harriet and Charlie.
