Jack R. Hammond

Jack Ronald Hammond, 81 of Sandy Creek, passed away peacefully Monday March 19, 2018 at the home of his daughter Denise.

Jack was born March 3, 1937 in Wayland, NY to Raymond and Helen (Brunswick) Hammond. He graduated from Batavia High School and served in the United States Army from 1955-58 and was called again during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a self-employed antique dealer for many years. He married Shirley Fantom in 1960, she passed February 8, 2012. Jack was a member of the Sandy Pond Sportsman’s Club and enjoyed hunting, traveling and his family who he loved dearly.

Surviving are his daughter Denise Conzone; his son Jack Hammond Jr.; grandchildren Shane Conzone, Jack Hammond, III and Nicole Nalle; a brother Joe (Justine); a sister Marilyn; nieces and nephews Kathryn (Scott) Coldren, Stephanie Hammond, Nathan (Katharine) Hammond, Phil Epstein, Kristopher Day, Kenneth Day and Martha.

Calling Hours will be Saturday March 24, 2018 from 1-3pm with the Funeral Service immediately following at 3pm at Summerville Funeral Home. A reception will follow the service at the Lacona VFW and a Celebration of Life is planned for June 9, 2018 at 1pm at the Sandy Pond Sportsman’s Club.

Donations may be made in his honor to either the Sandy Pond Sportsman’s Club or the Oswego County Fair Association.

The family wishes to extend a special Thank You to Mary Wallis and Wayne Salisbury for their friendship and companionship during Jack’s last years.


Lucy Gaff Janis

Lucy Gaff Janis, 98, formerly of Sandy Creek, died March 16, 2018, at Samaritan Summit Village, Watertown.

Lucy is survived by her children, Michael Janis, Marsha Rowe, Michele Bellinger, Mary Ellen Beebe, Wanda Zegers, Ann Futch, and daughter-in-law, Trudy Stacks. Lucy’s husband, Mike, passed away in 1992. She was also predeceased by her son, LaDan Stacks, a sister, Eris Hulsey, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition, Lucy is survived by 28 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers of Samaritan Summit Village, many of whom became very dear to Lucy over the years, especially her roommate, Chris Hill. Lucy was much loved and will be greatly missed.

Donald Vernon Sykes, 73, of Baldwinsville went to be with his heavenly father on Monday, March 26, 2018. Donald was born in Gouverneur, NY on October 11, 1944 to the late Milton “John” and Edna (Hurley) Sykes. He grew up in the Fine, NY area and attended Clifton-Fine Central in Star Lake. After graduating in 1963, he enlisted in the Air Force as a nuclear weapons specialist then in 1966 he graduated from the joint-service Explosive Ordinance Disposal School in Indian Head, MD. He saw overseas duty in Germany, Taiwan, Korea, Quebec, and Alaska as well as stateside service in MA, NY, NM, MI and WA. He retired in 1990 as a CMSgt. He then worked for several years at a senior apt. complex in Keeseville, NY before moving to Baldwinsville. He enjoyed hunting and serving his Lord. He served not only his church, but also the Upstate NY District Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by his wife Irene whom he married in 1969 in Frankfurt, Germany. His daughter Tonya (Darryl) of Baldwinsville; his five grandchildren; Hanna, Emmie, Adianna, Mirijam, and Noah; his brother Claude (Christine) of Baldwinsville; a sister Judy (Phillip) Maybee of Ortonville, MI; half-sister Carol Ciulla of Ronhonkoma, NY; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Saturday, March 31st from 10 to 11:30 am followed by a service at 11:30 am at Christ Community Church, 3644 Warners Road, Syracuse. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Fine, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Upstate NY District Church of the Nazarene, P.O. Box 258, Clay, NY 13041. This donation will support missions in the area that were important to Don.

Shirley Ann Holland

Funeral services for Shirley Ann Holland, age 62 of the Stowe Road, Ogdensburg will be held on Monday (April 2, 2018) at 2:00pm at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home with Rev. Donna Fichette officiating. Burial will be at a later date at the Hailesboro Cemetery in Gouverneur.

Calling hours will be held also on Monday from 11:00am until the time of the service. Ms. Holland passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday (March 28th).

Surviving is her longtime companion Marc Barney of Ogdensburg; a son Herbert Collins of Salt Lake City, UT; two daughters JoAnne Collins of Biloxi, MS and Jodi (Douglas) Haggerty of Lowville; siblings Junior Holland of Ogdensburg, Tony Holland of Florida and Gary Holland of Ogdensburg; two sisters Tina Warren of Norfolk and Marlene Fluno of Greenville, SC; grandchildren Kyle Fisher, Keith Collins, Christy Mims, Makala Mims, Tayler Haggerty, Gregory Haggerty and Cody Haggerty; two special dogs Sandy & Ellie, along with several nieces nephews & cousins.

An infant sister Juanita Holland and three brothers Frank, Larry & William Holland predeceased her.

Shirley was born on March 29, 1955 in Gouverneur, a daughter of the late William & Marian Holland Sr., and graduated from Gouverneur High School. A previous marriage ended, but again found love with her longtime companion Marc Barney.

During her career she worked as a home healthcare aid for 20 years prior to moving to Arkansas where she operated a small diner with her son. In 2001 she met Marc Barney and have spent the last 18 years as owner/operators of the S & M Trucking Company.

Shirley enjoyed traveling, collecting knick knacks, solar ornaments and shopping at the Salvation Army & Dollar Stores. She loved her children and grandchildren, and was devoted and hard working.

Irene V. Wilson

Irene V. Wilson, 73, of Brownville passed away at her home on Thursday, March 29, 2018.

Irene was born in Poland on August 6, 1944, daughter of Stefan and Anna Powlski Varakuta. Her family fled Poland when Irene was just 5 years old and came to the United States. She attended high school in Massena and graduated from SUNY Cortland where she received her Masters Degree in education. A marriage to Roy E. Wilson ended in divorce.

She began her career as a reading specialist and second grade teacher in Clinton, NY. While there, she was a member of the Junior League of Utica, helping underprivileged children. In 1985, she and her two children relocated to Watertown where she served as principal at Knickerbocker Elementary School, Ohio Street School and North Elementary School. She retired in 2014 after 36 years in education.

There was nothing more important to Irene than her family and making an impact on the lives of the many students she encountered. Irene was very civic minded and served on numerous boards, councils and organizations throughout her career and in retirement. An avid reader, Irene was an advocate for Watertown Education Association Little Libraries.

She is survived by her two children, Shelby L. Morgia and husband, John E., Black River and Steven R. Wilson, Holly Springs, NC; two grandchildren, Bailey A. Wilkinson and Kendall McDaniel; two brothers, Alex Varakuta and long time companion, Sandra Noyes, Massena and Russell Varakuta, London, England; one niece, Nicola Varakuta, and one nephew, Tristan Varakuta.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown on Tuesday, April 3rd, from 4 - 7PM. There will be no funeral service and burial will be at the convenience of her family.

Jane M. Graham

It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Jane M. Graham, 90, of 531 S. Massey Street, Watertown from her earthly life to her heavenly home to join our dear father, “Papa”. She left this world on Good Friday, March 30, 2018, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Jane was born December 18, 1927 in Cape Vincent, NY, the daughter of the late Aloysius M. and Elizabeth M. Docteur Reff. She graduated in 1944 from Cape Vincent Central School.

She was married to James F. Graham, son of the late John and Elizabeth O’Neill Graham, on May 21, 1949 at St. Vincent DePaul Church, Rosiere, NY with Rev. Walter P. Charbonneau officiating. Mr. Graham died on May 10, 1996.

Jane graduated in 1948 as a Registered Nurse from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. While raising her nine children, she worked at Ryan’s Nursing Home and Mercy Hospital until retiring in April 1990.

Mrs. Graham was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church and a member of their Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a Girl Scout Leader and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Dexter & Brownville Senior Citizens Organization, the St. Patrick’s Dart Baseball Team, and the Mercy Hospital Alumni Association.

Surviving are eight children, Michael J. and wife, Gail, Webster, Julie E. Goad and husband, Marshall, Belleair Bluffs, FL, Mark J. and wife, Judy, Standish, ME, Michele A. Graham-Randall and husband, Michael, Oswego, Joel F. and wife, Karen, Jamesville, James P. Graham and Lisa Worden, Watertown, Jill M. Dittler and husband, Eric, Cicero, and Jay E. and wife, Michelle, Watertown and her daughter-in-law Carol Graham, Camillus, NY. “Meme” is also survived by twenty-two grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins.

Jane was preceded in death by her son, John M. Graham, December 22, 2016, sister, Eulalia Burke, and brother, Noel Reff.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 2, from 4 - 7PM at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown. A prayer service will be held on Tuesday, April 3, at the funeral home at 9:15AM followed by the funeral mass celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church at 10AM. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Glenwood Cemetery.

Jane enjoyed spending time with her husband, Jimmy, at their summer home on Sherwin Bay, Pillar Point. They spent numerous winters together in Florida as well as doing some traveling. Meme worked hard as a nurse and a mother of nine, never asking for much in return, and always finding time for a good laugh with her beloved husband, family, and friends. Most recently Meme enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, playing cards, using her Ipad and watching game shows. The time she spent with her family, however, was the most important to her. She treasured the time she had with her family and they valued the time they had with her. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends, We will especially miss her laugh.

Tina M. Thompson

Tina M. Thompson, Watertown, passed away at her residence Wednesday, March 28th surrounded by her family and under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County. She was 56 years old.

Born September 25, 1961 in Lowville, Tina was a daughter of Francis “Bill” and Edith (Congdon) Sheehan. She graduated from Copenhagen Central with the class of 1979.

In her early career Tina worked at Hotel Davenport in Copenhagen and as a cook at Pete’s Restaurant. For the last 28 years however she was employed as a caregiver at JRC.

On April 19, 1980 she married Tim L. Thompson at St. Mary’s Church in Copenhagen.

Tina enjoyed her family, baking cakes, camping, and her cats.

Surviving besides her mother, Edith, and husband, Tim, is her son: Dustin S. Thompson of Watertown; and 5 siblings: Carol A. and George Harris of West Carthage, Nancy L. and Gary Wilton of Florida, Wanda G. and Gary Snyder of Copenhagen, Francis “Al” and Shiela Sheehan of Copenhagen, Bruce P. Sheehan of Copenhagen. Also surviving are 14 nieces & nephews, and 9 great-nieces & nephews.

There are no public services scheduled at this time. A graveside service in Brookside Cemetery will be held at a date and time convenient to her family.

Thomas H. McCartin

Thomas H. McCartin, 53 of Watertown and formerly of Brownville passed away Friday evening at Samaritan Medical Center.

Thomas was born April 27, 1964 in Watertown the son of Hubert and June Rockwood McCartin. He attended General Brown High School. At the age of 13, he was in a snowmobile accident which caused him to become disabled.

He is survived by his mother June McCartin of Brownville; two sisters: Kimberly McCartin of Calera, Alabama and Kelli LaClair of Theresa, NY. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday April 3rd at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter at 6 PM. Calling hours will be from 4-6 PM prior to the service. Peter Michael Uhlein

Rochester: Peter Michael Uhlein passed away peacefully on March 29th, after a long, courageous battle with lung cancer. He was a fighter until the end. Through the highs and lows, Peter never complained; always up for an intimate gathering of friends & family. He especially loved his pool time and gardens.

Peter was blessed with access to unbelievable care. A new trial could provide another six months. A year become two, two years became four. We are especially proud of his contribution to trial research, being just the second person to enroll in his most recent treatment.

Peter was born in Watertown, October of 1965. He is the son of the late John and Sally Uhlein. He graduated from Berkshire School and went on to earn his Bachelors at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and his MBA at St. John Fisher. Peter grew up in a loving house, filled with five siblings, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and family friends.

Peter is survived by his husband, Jon Schick; sons, Christopher and Alexander; his favorite nap mates, Duke and Sol; brothers, Jay (Watertown) and Jeffrey (Colorado); sisters, Kathy Killary (Tennessee) and Kristin Uhlein Tufo (Florida), mother-in-law, Nancy Schick. He is predeceased by his brother, John

The memorial service for Randy L. Rielly will be Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in the chapel of TLC Funeral Home, Inc. There will be a calling hour from 4 - 5 p.m. prior to the memorial service. Mr. Rielly died at University Hospital in Syracuse, on March 29, 2018. He was 68.

He was born in Adams Center, NY the son of the late Herbert and Lois Hodder Rielly. He attended school in Adams Center and Sackets Harbor. Mr. Rielly enlisted in the United States Army in April 1969 until April 1971. He married Vesta Bates on November 7, 1970.

Mr. Rielly was a mechanic for Watertown Spring and Alignment for many years until he retired three years ago.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his name to the American Cancer Society. He is survived by his wife Vesta, his three children Todd and Kim Rielly of Alpharetta, GA, Jill Keruskie of Adams, and Mrs. Jeffrey and Jennifer Jock of Adams. Also surviving are his brother and two sisters Raymond Rielly of Plattsburgh, NY, Roberta Parker of Sackets Harbor, and Rosemary Patchen of Savannah, NY, and his nine grandchildren Sydney Jock, Michael Rielly, Lauren Rielly, Morgan Keruskie, Stephen Rielly, Mallory Jock, Mathew Keruskie, Nichole Rielly, Ethan Jock, and Katelyn Rielly.

Predeceased are his six brothers Rex, Richard, Ronald, Robert, Ralph and Roy Rielly, and his four sisters Rena Croom, Rita Patchen, Ruth and Ruby Rielly. Arrangements are with TLC Funeral Home.

Patricia C. Adams

HENDERSON – Patricia C. Adams, 79, of Rays Bay Road, died on Thursday morning, March 29, 2018 at home, under the loving care of her family and Jefferson County Hospice.

Patricia was born on December 28, 1938, a daughter of the late Reginald and June (Thomas) Carroll. She was a volunteer at the Jefferson County SPCA for 13 years. She also enjoyed gardening.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years, Fred; seven siblings, Bill (Paula) Carroll of Malone, NY; John Carroll of Florida; Anita Davis of Madrid, NY; Mary (Wayne) Osterhoudt of Pennsylvania; Joe (Teresa) Carroll of Fulton, NY; Jerry (Carmel) Carroll of Adams Center; Joan Tremont of North Carolina; Barb (Terry) Rendell of Adams Center, NY; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents, June and Reginald Carroll, as well as a brother, Charles Carroll.

Donations in Pat’s memory can be made to the Jefferson County SPCA, 25056 Water St., Watertown NY 13601, a cause that was very near and dear to her heart.

Arrangements are being handled by the Northridge Cremation Chapel of the Lundy Funeral Home. No public services will be held; a celebration of her life will be held in July.

Brad F. Wilber

MASSENA—Funeral Services for 47 year old Brad F. Wilber, a resident of Grant Street, Massena, and formerly of Norfolk, will be held at the Buck Funeral Home in Norfolk in Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dan Paladin presiding. Burial will be held in the Bixby Cemetery in Norfolk in the springtime. Mr. Wilber passed away unexpectedly Thursday evening at the Massena Memorial Hospital after he was stricken at work. Brad is survived by his two beloved daughters, Brooke Ann and Chontelle; his loving mother, Velma Wilber, Massena; his father, Wayne Wilber as well as his extended family and friends.

Born in Potsdam, NY to Wayne and Velma Osier Wilber, Brad graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School in 1988 and became a chef. He loved spending time in the kitchen and creating new and wonderful dishes. He was currently working for Vino Vidi Vici in Massena and was previously employed by The Village Inn, Violi’s and the Coaches Corner, all of Massena. In his spare time, Brad enjoyed plants, video gaming and going fishing. He truly loved to cook and spend time with his family. Rose “Rosie” Beutel

WATERTOWN – Rose “Rosie” Beutel, 81, of 17950 County Route 63, passed away on Friday evening, March 23, 2018 at the Hospice of Jefferson County Residence, where she had been a patient for one day.

Rosie, daughter of the late Frank and Dorothy Molnar, was born on September 18, 1936 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She moved to Worth as a child with her family. On October 26, 1954 she married William R. Beutel. The couple had six children together and ran the Massey Street Junkyard and Garage from 1967 until 1985 when Mr. Beutel passed away.

Mrs. Beutel owned and operated Rosie’s Restaurant on outer Bradley Street in the 1990’s. In addition, she worked at the Jefferson County Home, Bomax, and as a home health aide.

She enjoyed spending time at her Florida property and was very fond of animals.

Rosie is survived by her companion, Stanley Grabowski; three daughters, Ann M. Beutel and Hans “Chuck” Luck of Carthage; Susan Beutel and Michael Hutchinson of Lorraine; Corina and William Nemier of Pierrepont Manor; a daughter-in-law, Theresa Hutchins; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rosie is predeceased by her daughter, Loretta Snyder and two sons, Thomas and Kevin Beutel.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 1:30 PM at the American Legion Don Rounds Post # 586, Adams, NY 13605.

Lena N. Case

Lena N. Case, 80, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away Wednesday morning March 28, 2018 at Novant Medical Health Center, Winston-Salem, NC.

Born on June 24, 1937 in the town of Alexandria, NY, she was a daughter of George J. and Esther M. Robinson Norton. In 1955 she graduated from Theresa High School and from the House of the Good Samaritan School of Nursing in 1958.

Lena married Frederick E. Case on July 31, 1958 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, Watertown, NY, with the Rev. Benoit C. Dostie, officiating.

She was a registered nurse at the former Mercy Hospital and later Genesis Nursing Home, Watertown, NY, retiring in 1999, after 35 years of service.

Lena enjoyed crocheting and reading. Since retiring the couple has resided in Winston-Salem, NC.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Frederick; three sons, Matthew J. Case, Penn Yan, NY, Mark W. Case and Eric S. Case, both of Winston-Salem, NC; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Cindy and Jeffrey Martin, Winston-Salem, NC, Tina and Robert LaMarche II, Dexter, NY; three granddaughters; three great-grandsons; one sister, Isla Proven, Depauville, NY.

Her parents, four brothers, Kenneth Norton, Harold Norton, Paul Norton, William Norton, four sisters, Betty Jean Proven, Vera Norton, Ruth Lester and Iva Storie all died previously.

POTSDAM – Mr. W. Nye Smith, 96, a longtime resident of Lawrence Avenue, peacefully passed away Thursday morning, March 29, 2018 at the McClure Miller Respite Home in Colchester, Vermont with his daughter, Robilee by his side. Calling hours will be held at the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam with funeral services to be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Potsdam in May at a time to be announced. John K. Dixon

John K. Dixon, Jr, 84, of Hendersonville, NC, peacefully passed away on March 28, 2018 to be with his Heavenly Father and beloved wife, Priscilla. At the time of his death he was being lovingly cared for at Elizabeth House, a Hospice care facility in Flat Rock, NC.

John was born on May 5, 1933 in Adams Center, NY, to John Kenneth and Morna (Murray) Dixon. As a 1951 graduate of Adams Center High School, he joined the United States Marine Corps and honorably and actively served his country from 1951-1954. He was a proud veteran, having served in the Korean War with the 1st Marine Division. John was a sergeant with the 2nd Marine Division at the time of his discharge. While in the service John married his childhood sweetheart, Priscilla Nan Ryor, in Rodman, NY. Upon discharge, the Dixon’s moved to Adams Center where he worked for Carl E. Fassett, learning the trade of meat cutting under the GI Bill. From 1956-1962 John worked as a city patrolman for the Watertown Police Department. In 1962, John and Priscilla purchased and operated a grocery store in Copenhagen. Their store remained in business for 27 years. After deciding to close his business, and until his retirement, John worked for Bouyea Fassett’s Bakery as a manager of their two Watertown stores. Although John worked long, often hard, hours throughout his lifetime, the one thing that always remained constant was the love for his family.

After retirement, the Dixon’s moved to Hendersonville, NC to enjoy the more temperate climate. They returned to Northern NY for many summers to enjoy friends, family, and the family cottage on Hyde Lake. John, an avid outdoorsman, had a love of hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed playing softball, tennis and had exceptional skills in playing table tennis. His family will miss the joyful times shared around the ping-pong table with him. John was a past President of Riverside Cemetery in Copenhagen and also of Copenhagen Christian Radio, a charter member of the Copenhagen Civic Corporation, and had been an active member of the United Church of Copenhagen.

John is survived by his daughter, Laurinda D. Stockwell, of Norwood, NY, his son, Kevin J. Dixon and wife, Laura, of West Winfield, NY, and granddaughter, Gabrielle Dixon. He is also survived by his sister, Candace (Jack) Elmer of Adams Center, NY, brother-in-law Lawrence Roberts, Cherryville, NC, cousins, and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by Priscilla, his wife of 63 years, his parents, his sister Kathy (Lawrence) Roberts and an infant brother, Gerald.

Family visitation will take place beginning at 5:00 p.m. on April 5, 2018 at Naples Baptist Church, Naples, NC. A memorial service will follow at 6:00 p.m. In the spring, a celebration service will be held at the United Church of Copenhagen with internment of both Mr. and Mrs. Dixon to follow at the Riverside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN. 38105.
