Lowville – (Alice) Jane Baer Hadlow, 99, died peacefully at her home of 52 yrs in the early hours of Friday, September 7, 2018, surrounded by loving family and wonderful caregivers - affectionately dubbed, “Team Hadlow”.

Mrs. Hadlow was born May 13, 1919 in Minneapolis, MN. The daughter of the late Clarence Eugene Baer and Frances Mabel (Whalley) Baer. Her birth was eventful due to the fact that she and her fraternal twin sister were each born in one of the Twin Cities while their mother was enroute, via train to Seattle, WA.

She and her family enjoyed the outdoors, often taking wilderness camping trips together. That encouraged her involvement with the Girl Scouts of America, acting as both unit leader and waterfront leader for the summer scout camp. In later years, this passion led to her receiving the award of Eagle Scout, becoming a troop leader and eventually Neighborhood Chairman while living in the Baldwinsville, NY area.

After graduating from Cornell University in 1941 with a degree in Food Management, she met and later married, George Alfred Hadlow, Jr on June 20th, 1942 in Oswego, NY. He was soon deployed to join the US Army forces in WWII. When he returned from his tour of duty, they settled down and began their family.

They enjoyed raising their five children, traveling together and finally settling in their present home in Lowville. There were many summers spent sailing together on the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario.

Jane was also a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lowville serving as secretary to the Council of Churches for many years. She and George faithfully attended church, as this was a strong influence in their lives.

Once her family was grown, she utilized her background training in food preparation management and became Head Dietician at Lewis County General Hospital. After several years, she retired and continued enjoying her life with George as well as being involved with grandchildren and then engaging with her great grandchildren. She had a continuing interest in learning and kept up with all that was happening in the world. One of her favorite pastimes was watching football, golf and baseball and rooting for her favorite teams.

Surviving her are her husband, George, of 76 years; their four daughters, Susanne (Roman) Hrycun of Rhinebeck, NY; Ellen Goodrich of Naperville, IL; Frances (Rick) Collins of Williamsburg, VA; and Janis Hadlow of Cameron, NC; 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; as well as her youngest brother, Donald Baer of Kent, WA.

She was predeceased by her son, David William Hadlow; twin sister, Jean Baer Hallock; as well as brothers, Jack Baer and David Baer.

She was a modest person, never wanting to be the center of attention. However, she influenced so many people over her life without truly knowing it.

A memorial service will be held on a later date at the discretion of the family. She will be honored on Sunday, Sept 9, 2018 by the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Lowville during the 10:00 AM service. Any donations may be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in memory of David Hadlow.

Fr. Charlie left the following words to express his appreciation for his days on this earth: (Rev.) Charles M. Major, having successfully completed his allotted time on spaceship earth, has gone on to more profound realms. His accomplishments were modest, his enthusiasms were varied, his devotion as a pastor was warm, profound and personal; his mistakes were many, his offenses were garden variety—not an original sinner but practiced in imperfection.

Leaving NASA in 1967, David was employed by Cornell Laboratories in Buffalo, NY and there continued his further education. He earned a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering and then a PHD in Plasma Physics from SUNY Buffalo. During this time, he also worked as a professor at Buffalo State while starting his own company.

Realizing his calling was in research and development he went to work for Perk & Elmer in Salem, MA until his first retirement in 2001. Just because he felt the need for a refresher course in mathematics, he earned a a second Masters Degree in Mathematics. Also during this time they had been building a home at beloved Sylvia Lake for retirement. Retirement was short lived as he decided to consult in research and development for Smith and Nephew Endoscopy Division in MA. He commuted from Gouverneur to MA until his second retirement in 2005.

David was a member of IEEE(an engineering society) as well as as active in physics societies. He was also a member of The First United Methodist Church of Gouverneur and a former member of the Lions Club of Gouverneur.

Longtime hobbies included fishing, hiking the Adirondack trails as well as becoming a very accomplished photographer. But one of his most important goals in life was educating young people in the value of mathematics in their lives; and this fact can be attested to by his sons, nephews and grandchildren as well as students of Gouverneur, Harrisville and Edwards where he was a substitute teacher after his second retirement.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Gouverneur, Hospice House of 408 West Alexander Ave in Greenwood, SC 29646(www.hospicepiedmont.org.) or Alzheimer’s Association of Central NY.
