Formerly of Canton—Dr. Harry E Howe, 96, passed away on September 12, 2018, in Lebanon, NH. Harry was born in Tunbridge, VT, on October 7, 1921, to Etta and Silvester Howe. He was raised on a dairy farm with eight siblings. He attended local elementary and high school and graduated from the University of Vermont, in May of 1943, where he had enrolled in the Advanced Officer Candidate School (ROTC). Two weeks later, he reported for active duty in the US Army at Fort Devens, MA. Shortly thereafter he arrived at Fort Benning, GA, to start Infantry Officer Candidate School (OCS). He graduated and was commissioned a second lieutenant on September 11, 1943. After additional training, he arrived in Greenock, Scotland, on June 28, 1944, and entered World War II, as an Infantry Platoon leader.

During this time, he and some of his men were captured and sent to a German POW camp. They were liberated for a short period of time, but then recaptured. He remained a POW, until the end of the war in the European theater. He was released as a POW and arrived back in the US, by boat, at Norfolk VA, on July 1, 1945. He spent the summer, helping on the home farm and resumed his relationship with Theo Orr, of Vershire, VT, who he met while attending the University of Vermont. After a short engagement, they set a wedding date for August 18, 1945. After their marriage, he resumed his tour of active duty and was discharged, in December of 1945.

Later that same month, he accepted a teaching position in Poultney, VT and the following fall, returned to the University of Vermont, on the GI Bill, to earn his Master’s Degree in Education. During this time, their first child, Gregory, was born. That fall he was hired as a high school math and science teacher in Barre, VT. After a while, it became clear, that he could not support a family on his teacher’s salary and applied for medical school, something he had thought about for a number of years.

He was admitted, to the University of Vermont Medical School, Class of 1952, and moved the family to Burlington, VT. He attended, four years of medical school, four years of surgery training, one year as an intern, and another year as a resident. During that time, he and his wife Theo, had two more children; Douglas and Fay. In July of 1957, he moved the family to Massena, NY, bought a home and started a private surgery practice.

He remained in Massena, for about a year and a half, before moving the family to Canton, NY, a small university town, to continue his surgery practice, until retirement on July 1, 1987. During their time in Canton, both Harry and Theo were very active in the community. Shortly after arriving in Canton, he became the school physician at Canton Agricultural and Technical Institute (ATI). He also had a long-term relationship with St. Lawrence University, providing trauma care and became the athletic team physician. Harry ultimately received a North Country Citation in 1977, from St. Lawrence University, a Distinguished Citizen Award from Canton College, in 1986, and was inducted into the SUNY Canton Wall of Fame, in 2013. He and Theo established a Nursing scholarship at SUNY Canton, in 1983. Theo, for many years, was a member of the Canton College Foundation Board.

Also during their time in Canton, they built, acquired, and managed residential rental properties. Those businesses continue today; over fifty years later. They were active in many local groups and organizations and very active socially.

Upon retirement, the couple moved to Louisville, NY, in 1988, where they purchased a 200 acre farm and raised registered Polled Herefords and had a large vegetable garden. They did extensive traveling around the world, and included the extended family on ski vacations to the western US and Canada, as well as several trips to the Bahamas and Virgin Islands. In 1996, they moved back to Vermont, for a second retirement, in Quechee. Some time after relocating, Harry wrote and published his memoirs and copies of the book, “A Journey From Tunbridge”, are available for loan, from the Village and Town of Canton Historian, as well as SUNY Canton. Copies were also presented to the UVM Medical School and the Historical Society of Tunbridge, VT. Again, they were very active in community affairs, as well as recreational opportunities at the Quechee Club; skiing, hiking, canoeing, golf. In 2015, they moved to Harvest Hill, a retirement home in Lebanon, NH.

Harry enjoyed many outdoor activities, as previously mentioned. He also enjoyed hunting; deer, turkeys, waterfowl, and upland game. He enjoyed fly fishing for trout. He was a member of the Stillwater Club of Canton, NY for over 20 years. Until recently, he and Theo would return to Canton every spring, to participate in their son’s maple sugar operation.

Harry was the last of his siblings, to pass. He lost his, wife of 71 years, Theo, on Dec 3, 2016. He lost a son, Douglas, in 1996. He is survived by his son Gregory, his daughter Fay, his grandchildren Graham Howe, Carrie Capella, Avery Weber, and Ian Weber; and great grand children Eloise and Harry Howe, children of Graham and his wife Liz, and Vivian Capella, daughter of Carrie and her husband Tyler Capella. Harry had a very successful and busyP life. He created and left a wonderful legacy. He provided very generous support for the UVM Medical School and SUNY Canton. He lead by example and was not afraid of hard work. His first year in retirement, on the farm in Louisville, he cut, split, and stacked 80 face cords of firewood.

Memorial contributions may be made in Harry’s honor; a tax deductible donation may be made to “SUNY Canton College Foundation Office” c/o the Dr. Harry E. Howe Endowed Scholarship and mailed to: The SUNY Canton College Foundation, 34 Cornell Drive, Canton, NY 13617. The scholarship is given yearly to a student in the nursing program. Gregory Howe has agreed to match all donations. A celebration of life service, will be held at Harvest Hill, Alice Peck Day Drive, Lebanon, NH, on October 20, 2018, at 1:30 PM.

Maria L. West

Maria L. West passed away on Saturday, September 22nd in Rockford, IL surrounded by her loving family. The former Maria Frechette grew up in Sackets Harbor NY, was 56 years old and died of complications related to cancer treatment. She was the daughter of Eldon and Emelia Frechette. She is survived by her husband, three children and six grandchildren, her parents, five brothers (Vinny, Mark, Danny, Dave and Matt) and many nieces and nephews.

Maria was born in Toronto Canada in the fall of 1962. She attended Sackets schools and graduated from Immaculate Heart Central in 1980. She also graduated from Jefferson Community College and Nazareth University in Rochester NY, where she received a degree in Elementary Education and Sociology. She received her Masters from Albany State, in NY, with a degree in behavior management.

Maria had a rewarding and diverse work career. She worked as a special education teacher in New York, New Hampshire and Indiana. She opened and ran her own Nursery School ( A Sound Start ) and worked as The Parent Services Coordinator at the New York State School for the Deaf in Rome, NY. While working as a Special Education Teacher in Indiana, Maria recognized a need that was not being met when it came to educating children with Autism. Maria was instrumental in creating a program at the Brownsburg School Corp. (A suburb of Indianapolis) specifically for children with Autism called the Bridge Program. Later Maria’s skills were put to use within Brownsburg as a “Special Education Consultant” working with Teachers and Administrators to create the most effective learning environment for all of Brownsburg’s Special Needs students. Maria was a gifted educator, parent advocate and problem solver who always put the needs of her students first. She accepted people where they were and worked with them to make things better. She never saw limitations but only potential in everyone she interacted with. Maria’s most important role however was that of wife, mother and Nani, daughter and sister.

Maria was married to Rick West at Sacred Heart Church in Watertown NY in August, 1987 and then settled together in Nashua New Hampshire until Maria became pregnant with their first child, Amelia (Lebanon, Indiana). They then relocated back to New York in order to be closer to family and welcomed Amelia upon her birth to their first home in Utica, NY. Maria decided to put teaching on hold to raise their children and soon brought their second daughter Andreana into the world. Andreana introduced us to deafness, which only fed Maria’s natural desire to educate herself first so she could then educate others. During the learning process Maria came across another opportunity to enrichen our lives and soon adopted a two year old deaf boy. Tyler joined his two sisters and the journey continued. Maria saw a gap in pre-school education for the deaf, which is why she started her Nursery School, open to hearing and deaf. What a gift it was that Maria understood education, sign language and what it was like to be the mother of three little ones. This soon led the family to relocate to Rome NY and Maria accepted the position of parent coordinator at N.Y.S.S.D. Our Family and many others were positively affected by Maria’s ability to see a need and fill it. During this time period Maria and her Family were recognized as “Family of the Year” in Oneida County, NY. Rewards of this type, although an honor, is not what motivated Maria. She kept family first, always, which included being an amazing nurturing wife, mother, daughter, sister, sister in-law, daughter-in-law, aunt, God-mother as she recognized every birthday, anniversary and special moment with something heart felt. The family then moved to the west side of Indianapolis, where at first she was not looking for a job but when she enrolled her children in school, they saw that she was a Special Education teacher and Maria left that day in her shorts and t-shirt with a job offer. Amelia blessed us with three lovely and lively grandchildren Oscar (Ozzy age 11), Daisy (9) and Tula (7). Tyler has yet to find the love of his life and lives in Indianapolis. Andreanna married Lance Weldgen (Walworth, WI) and they continued to bless Maria with three beautiful granddaughters, Melody (4), Maple (2) and Luna (4 months). Maria will continue to be their Guardian Angel….always.

Maria will be missed by so many but anyone who knew Maria had their lives positively changed in some way. Maria’s selflessness had no limits. She lived a full rich life and always felt blessed. Although Maria is no longer here with us on Earth, she lives on in the minds and hearts of the lives that she has touched.

Maria was a member of St Rita’s Catholic Church in Rockford, IL.

A celebration of her life will be held October 6th from 10:00AM to 12:00PM at the “Church @ Main”, 1500 E Main Street Brownsburg. It will be a short service followed by a small reception.

In addition a funeral mass will be held October 20th at 1:00PM at Saint Andrews Catholic Church, corner of East Main and Woosley streets, Sackets Harbor NY. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the American Cancer Society or the Autism Society of Indiana.
