Mary Bastian, 80, passed away at her home in Clayton surrounded by her family on Saturday, September 29, 2018.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton on Tuesday, October 2, from 4 – 7 PM. A prayer service will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 3, at 2:15 PM with the funeral mass directly following at St. Mary’s Church @ 3:00 PM followed by burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Mary was born on May 21, 1938 during the Great Depression. She was the daughter of Lyle and Teresa Whalen Hall who were dairy farmers in Antwerp, New York. When Mary was still young, the Government purchased their property for the expansion of Camp Drum which is now Fort Drum. The family then moved to Oxbow where they purchased another large dairy farm which was managed by the family.

Mary attended a one room school house for five years before graduating from Antwerp High. She graduated from Ithaca College in with a B.S.in Physical Education. Mary began her teaching career at Clayton Central School, now Guardino which is where she met and worked with her future husband to be, Robert Bastian Sr. On August 18, 1962 the two wed at Holy Family Church in Watertown, NY. Mary was predeceased by Robert in March of 2004.

Shortly after marrying the couple started a family and with two young children they put their teaching careers on a back burner and moved to Morrisville, NY where they purchased three businesses which they ran for several years before purchasing a large 18-hole golf resort named Marble Island just outside of Burlington VT in Winooski. In 1971 the family returned to Clayton where she resided until her death. Mary spent what little free time she had in the summer months from teaching, volunteering for special needs children and giving to her community for 25 years with the Clayton Youth Commission where she served as a coach, secretary and most importantly a mentor!

Although she taught at BOCES, Lyme, and Cape Vincent schools her career came full circle when she joined the staff at Thousand Islands High School where she eventually retired from in 1996. She coached for many years the girls’ varsity soccer, volleyball, basketball, and softball teams and has far too many championships and accolades to list but even had an entire day named for her at the school affectionately dubbed, B Day!

Mary never stood on the sidelines and coached, she was on the field like her players and spent gym class with her students playing along and teaching them by example as well. When not coaching her own team she could be found inside or even outside a skating rink where she was a hockey mom to both of her children for 20 years.

Probably Mary’s biggest passion outside of her family was golfing. She was a charter member of the Clayton Ladies Golf League and served as secretary/treasure for fifty years where she begrudgingly handed over a filing cabinet full of stats only just recently. Amazingly, she had 5 holes in one.

Mary was a devoted communicant of St. Mary’s Church, member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and past secretary. Mary was also an Auxiliary member of Colon Couch American Legion Post 821. Founder and Host of Western Night for approximately 20 years. Mary and her husband Bob took the Sr. Girl Scouts to the World’s Fair in 1964 in Flushing NY. Mary served as a girl scout leader but also was the cookie mother for many years as well. She enjoyed volunteering at the T. I. Museum and the Handweaving Museum and playing all kinds of card games, especially Bridge, mahjong and poker. She was a member of the NYSUT Union and NYS Retired Teacher’s Assoc.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Donata E. Williams and husband, Lt. Col. Gary P., Spring Hill, FL; son, Robert D. Bastian, Jr., Clayton; three grandchildren Alexandra E. Buduson, Clayton, and Colleen T. Natali, Spring Hill, FL, Isabella E Bastian, Manlius; two siblings, James E. Hall and wife, Jean, Watertown, Frederick E. Hall and wife, Elma, Antwerp; one sister in law, Belva Hall, Carthage. And several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Along with her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Terese Stevenson, brother, Lawrence W. Hall, one niece, two nephews and three great nephews.

The family will be hosting all friends and family at O’Brien’s Restaurant immediately following the graveside service on Wednesday.

Donations in Mary’s name may be made to either Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St. or SPCA of Jefferson County, 25056 Water St., both in Watertown, NY 13601. Online condolences to her family may be posted at www.cummingsfuneral.com.

Alice A. Allen

NORWOOD-- ALICE A. ALLEN (VALYO, DOLECKI) -- I was born in Canton, NY on December 6, 1922. My Mom and Pop were: Mina Allen (Fisk) and Rufus Allen. Mina had 17 children, (God Bless her soul). She probably still holds the record for having (5) sets of twins. I grew up dirt-poor. After the Pyrites, N.Y. Plant closed, dad lost his job and I could not wait to leave the farm life. I was the only one of my siblings who graduated from high-school, and I have always been proud of that. Maybe that is why I pushed my four children to better themselves. I am so very proud of my children who had continued their education and held good jobs. Look at my grandchildren -- Gosh, they are all highly educated. James has always said, “Mom, you broke all the chains, including ignorance and you were a women’s right advocate before the term was even popular.. (maybe I did do something well).

While attending high school I worked as a nanny, so I could live away from the farm. I was able to achieve a letter in archery from Massena High School, while keeping up with school and work. After High school I worked in the Ogdensburg, N.Y. Hospital for the mentally ill. (I would not recommend that job to anyone). I went to NYC and there I met my future husband, Michael Bernard Valyo. He was charming, quiet and had fancy cars. Michael and I had four wonderful children. Shortly after the youngest was born, I moved back up state to be near my sisters; Bertha, Frances, Regina, and my parents, who now lived in Louisville, N.Y.. In 1956 Michael bought us a home at 85 North Main St. Norwood, NY. We all loved that home and I still do. I worked at the old “Sunset Lodge.” (now - “The Lobster House”) as a waitress. Financially life got better when I started working at the post office.

In 1962, I moved to Vermont with 3 of my children while Michael lived with his father in Rochester, NY. In one year I was able to obtain a nursing degree at Fannie School of Nursing and a divorce. (back then you had to live out of state for a year to get a divorce). We then moved to Massena, NY.

While visiting my daughter Alice, in Long Island, NY, I met John Dolecki. John, a big strapping fellow who worked for the Post Office and was a WWII, Marine Veteran and hero. He worked and lived with shrapnel in his legs and never complained. After John and I married, we moved around NY state until we finally settled in Florida. I had a great life with John until he passed away. I stayed in Florida for a few years. After the hurricane hit, James painted my home (perky peach). I moved to North Carolina about six years ago and stayed my son Michael for a year. It was wonderful, but I needed some female company. So, I moved in with my son Jeffery and his wife Maggie. They lived in the same town as Michael, so I was able to continue seeing him. Jeff is amazing, he has MS and confined to a wheel chair and still mows the lawn and works hard at what he can do. My daughter, Alice wanted me to live in Las Vegas with her and hubby Jim, but I wanted to be closer to my grandchildren and it was just too far away. I have always appreciated offers from Alice, James and his wife Linda (too cold in NH). I thank god, Maggie was taking care of me especially the last couple of years as my health went down quickly. She was working full time and still found the time to pick up Jeff and me for doctor’s appointments. The only advice I would give to my great-grandchildren would be: education is the most important thing you can acquire and it does not stop with a formal degree. Keep learning all your life.

I am survived by my children Michael, Valyo, James and Linda Valyo, Alice Vandermeer, Jeffery and Maggie Valyo. My grandchildren: Michael, John, Kristen, Marc, Shane, Woody, Melissa and Andrew. My great -grandchildren: Ryland, Taylor, Faith, Luke, Noah, Blake, Zach, Marrion and Allison. I am very grateful for a full and happy life and I especially loved my children. Please take a moment to visit our family park bench at the Norwood Fountain. God Bless you all, please be good to one another. A Funeral Mass will be held at St Andrew’s Catholic Church in Norwood on Friday October 5, 2018 at 11 am, with interment to follow in the Calvary Cemetery in Norwood. Memories and condolences may be shared online at www.buckfuneralhome.com . The Buck Funeral Home in Norwood is serving my family.

Survived by her son Charles (Aleisia) Ashlaw; daughters Jo-Anne (James) Dishaw and LaRonda Ashlaw; grandchildren Jesserlyn Ashlaw, Derrick Dishaw, Adam Ashlaw, Joshua Ashlaw, a great grandson Gavin Dishaw and a great granddaughter Zoey Ashlaw.

Yvonne was born on January 2, 1948 in Potsdam, NY to Bert Jones and Estella Simonds. She was a graduate of Parishville-Hopkinton Central School. Yvonne worked for years for St. Lawrence County as the Nutrition Manager for the Office of the Aging in Canton, NY; retiring from there in 2009. Prior to her retirement she worked at St. Lawrence University and also was the owner and operator of the Edge of Town Restaurant for 9 years.

She spent her life selflessly caring for others. Countless foster girls over 28 years felt her capacity for loving and giving. At her restaurant she would feed those who could not pay and brighten everyone’s day. When she delivered meals to the elderly she stayed and talked to them and made sure they were healthy and smiling before she left them. When she managed the nutrition site she did special things for the elderly people she fed. She would make homemade soup and tell them to bring a bowl on Friday and send them soup for the weekend. She would knit them all slippers, dish clothes and scarfs.

Her family never doubted her love for them. She always put them before herself. She taught them compassion, work ethic and love of family.

She did all of this in good spirit and smiling despite many hurdles, hard times, heart breaks and illnesses. She was an inspiration to all of those whose lives she touched.
