Margaret S. “Margie” McCullough, 58, of 132 E. Remington St., Black River, passed away December 26, 2018 at her home.

She was born on February 11, 1960 in El Paso, TX, daughter of Margaret Pavlas. She attended school in El Paso, TX and later met Steven McCullough while he was serving in the US Army and stationed at Fort Bliss. The couple married on March 14, 1987 and resided throughout the US and Germany while he served his career in the military. He retired in 1993 at Fort Drum and the couple continued to reside in Black River. Margie was a project manager at Minfelt Building Supply, White’s Lumber and 84 Lumber up until 2015. She also enjoyed reading, gardening and loved her animals.

Mr. McCullough was a mechanic at Watertown Springs for 24 years, retiring in 2017.

Among her survivors are husband, Steven D. McCullough, Black River, two daughters and a son in law, Daniele N. and Ron Pilkington, OH, Samantha D. McCullough, Watertown, two grandchildren, Maddie and Cole, her sister and brother in law, Judy and John Reiff, OK, her beloved St. Bernard, Bullwinkle and her black lab, Murphy.

She had two brothers Michael and David Pavlas pass before her.

Calling hours will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 2 at the Bruce Funeral Home 131 Maple St., Black River.

James H. Serabian, 70, of Ambler, PA, passed away on December 24, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. James was born in Massena, NY on October 19, 1948 to the late Hachig and Anne (D’Arienzo) Serabian. James was a Professor at Montgomery County Community College, where he taught Introduction to Education. He was most proud of being a father. He also enjoyed Astronomy, building stone walls, running his wood business, and golfing. He loved college basketball, especially during March Madness, and often described himself as a “bracketologist”. James is survived by his son Zachary T. Serabian, his loving significant other Mary Frost; his step-son Kevin Kaufman (Gina); and his 2 step-grandchildren: Lucia and Carson Kaufman; his 3 brothers: Arthur, Richard (Carol), Robert (Elise) Serabian. He was predeceased by his brother Thomas Serabian. A memorial service will be held at Blue Bell Country Club, 1800 Tournament Drive, Blue Bell, PA 19422 on Saturday, January 5th, 2019 from 1-4pm. Funeral services of Marion Smith Houmiel, age 97, of Ogdensburg, NY, will be held on Friday, December 28, 2018 at Frary Funeral Home at 1:30PM with Deacon Mark Lalonde officiating. Burial will be in Ogdensburgh Cemetery in the Spring. Calling hours will be held from 11:00 to 1:00 on Friday, December 28, 2018, at Frary Funeral Home. Mrs. Houmiel passed away on Wednesday night, December 26, 2018 at Riverledge Nursing Home surrounded by her loving family.

Marion is survived by her two sons, H. Wayne Houmiel and his wife, Barbara of Ogdensburg and Englewood, FL and Jeffrey H. Houmiel and his wife, Suzanne, of Lisbon, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She is predeceased by two brothers, Albert Smith and Walter Smith.

Marion was born on March 8, 1921, in Plattsburgh, NY, the daughter of Harlan and Julia Schryver Smith. She graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1939. Marion married Hubert, her high school sweetheart, on November 21, 1940, at Notre Dame Church with Monsignor Charbonneau officiating. He predeceased her on January 5, 1993. Marion first went to work for St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center as a secretary for Dr. Dory for six years and later became employed by ACCO International Brands for five years. Mrs. Houmiel later retired as a secretary from the New York State Department of Transportation after ten years of employment.

Marion enjoyed running Houmiel Camps with her husband Hubert and spending time with friends and family. She was an avid Yankee’s fan, a past member of the American Legion and very active with the Centennial Terrace Association.

Joan Y. (Hindery) Kirkey

Joan Y. (Hindery) Kirkey 92, passed away the evening of December 17, 2018 at the Halifax Health Hospice in Orange City, Florida with her daughters at her side.

Joan was born June 4, 1926 in Deland, Florida. She was the daughter of George L. and Regina (Codey) Hindery. She graduated from Deland High School and received her Associates Degree from Pearl River Junior College in Mississippi.

Joan met the love of her life, Raymond, at a dance in Sanford, Florida. They married January 22, 1947 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Deland Florida. At that time, they returned to Brownville, NY to start their married life.

Joan worked for New York Telephone Company for many years.

She raised, showed and field trialed German Shorthaired Pointer with her husband. She enjoyed going to bingo, and the casinos. She also enjoyed cruises and traveling across the country on the train.

Joan is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Patricia and William Mousaw of Watertown NY and Cecile and Robert Scofield of Colonie NY. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Steven (Marisa) Scofield, Elizabeth (Carmen) DiPiazza, Sarah Belland, Peter (Krystal) Scofield, Megan (Sean) Magrum, Rachel Scofield, Douglas (Christie) Mousaw and Brenna (Joshua) Schneider. She is also survived by 16 great-grandchildren, her sister Mary Ann Carter, and beloved nieces and nephews.

Joan was predeceased by her husband Raymond D. Kirkey, her parents, her brothers George, Lucian, Robert and Joseph Hindery and her nephews, Steven and Sidney Hindery.

A funeral mass was held on December 20, 2018 at St. Ann’s Church in DeBary Florida and she was buried December 21, 2018 at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.

Stephen P Bergmann

Stephen P Bergmann,64,formerly of Croghan and most recently of Prescott, AZ, went to be with the Lord on Dec.20,2018. He was born on Aug.3,1954,in Canton, NY, the son of Bernard and Lena Bergmann. He graduated from Beaver River Central School in 1972 and from Hope College, MI, in 1976, with a BA in Psychology, Geology, and Religious Studies. In 1994 he earned his MA in Special Education from the University of Arizona, Tucson.

Steve was a medical social worker. He visited disabled persons in their homes and provided Life Care Planning, counseling, referrals, and information on community resources. Steve had a big heart and was kind. He was loved by his clients and all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Shelley, of 19 years, two step-children, a brother, Bernie III, of Chicago, a sister, Phyllis (Andy) Noftsier, of Castorland, NY, a brother-in-law, John Hornbach, of Florida, two step-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Bernard and Lena Bergmann, a sister, Nancy L Hornbach, a sister-in-law, Linda S Bergmann, a niece and a nephew.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Elizabeth S. “Bette” Ingerson, 87, passed away at her home in Clayton on Thursday morning, December 27, 2018.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton on Sunday, December 30, from 2 - 5 PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church on Monday, December 31, at 11 AM with Rev. Arthur J. LaBaff, pastor, presiding. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the spring in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Bette was born in Perch River, town of Pamelia on October 27, 1931, daughter of the late Kenneth and Marie Phillips Sanford. She was a graduate of LaFargeville High School and attended the Watertown School of Commerce.

On May 13, 1953 she married the love of her lifetime, Richard L. Ingerson in Rosiere. Together they enjoyed golfing, playing in leagues at the C-Way Golf Course, raising their children and spending time with great friends in the community. “Ours was something special”, no greater love story was ever told, one for the ages ----Richard passed on June 6, 1971.

Bette dedicated her life to her children and their families. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church where she also taught religious education; Bette also worked summers at the Thousand Islands Inn.

Bette’s legacy will live on in her two daughters and their husbands, Toni M. and Paul Ingenito, Springfield, VA and Tina M. and Thomas Schuth, Spencerport; six grandchildren and two great granddaughters, Paul and Amanda Ingenito and their two daughters, Adrianna and Isla (who was born on the day of her great grandmother’s passing), Brandon and Aline Ingenito, Richia Ingenito, and Shane, Erik, and Cassandra Schuth; five siblings and their spouses, Donald and Sally Sanford, Alexandria Bay, Shirley and Charlie Melara, Watertown, Gwendolyn and Dennis Kirkby, LaFargeville, Thomas and Christine Sanford, Watertown, and Suzanne and Noel Longton, LaFargeville; three sisters-in-law, Beverly Sanford, Dexter, Martha Sanford, Chaumont, and Mary Lou and Christopher Muggleton, Clayton; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her two brothers, Richard and Kenneth Sanford, died before her.

Joan M. Kilbourn

LYONS FALLS - Joan M. Kilbourn, 80, of Lyons Falls, died Monday morning, December 24, 2018 at Lewis County General Hospital comfort room under the care of her family and Lewis County Hospice.

Mrs. Kilbourn was born August 24, 1938 in Lowville the daughter of the late Clifford L. and Frances M. (Bourcy) Peebles. She graduated from Lowville Academy and Central School. Joan married Charles W. Kilbourn on March 4, 1957 at Church of Holy Cross in Dover, DE with Rev. John M. Donahue officiating. She was a home care giver for over 30 years. Charles died on January 28, 1997.

She was a member of Forest Presbyterian Church. Joan was an accomplished organist and played at the Forest Presbyterian Church for more than 30 years as well as many other area churches. She gave the gift of music to many students over the years. Joan will be missed by many.

She is survived by her four children, Charles “Mike” (Esther) Kilbourn of Lyons Falls; Kathleen M. (Thomas) Bartlett of Champion; Lynn M. Kilbourn and Ann M. Fenton, both of Lyons Falls; three grandchildren, Kristi Stanford, Gary and Rachel Fenton all of Lyons Falls; her sister Janet Peebles of Georgia.

Her services will be private with Rev. Naomi Kelly officiating. Spring burial will be in Lowville Rural Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Lewis County Hospice and the Lewis County General Hospital 2nd Floor, East Wing nurses for the wonderful and compassionate care of Joan in her final days.

Elmer E. Perry

Elmer E. Perry, 86, Ellisburg, passed away Thursday afternoon, December 27th with his family at his side.

The funeral will be 11 am Monday, December 31st at the Ellisburg United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Strader officiating. Spring burial with military honors will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Town of Henderson. Calling hours will be Sunday, December 30th from 2 pm – 4 pm and 6 pm – 8 pm at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville.

Mr. Perry is survived by his children Debbie (Wayne) Gillette, Black River, Vicky Lent, Clayton, Lou Ann (Michael) Gleason, Ellisburg, Eldon (Debbie) Perry, Watertown, Donna Jo (Albert) Dowker, Adams, Tim (Terry) Perry, Sackets Harbor; 22 grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren; 3 brothers William, Marion, Jr. and Jerry, all of Tennessee; many nieces and nephews. 4 brothers, Vernon, Rolin, Allen and Eldon predeceased him.

Elmer was born in Athens, TN on April 15, 1932, a son to Marion H. and Louisa Bohannon Perry. He left high school before graduating to serve during the Korean War from 1950 – 1952 and was attached to the 101st Airborne Division. Following his honorable discharge, he continued his military service with the Army Reserves with the 479th Engineering Battalion in Watertown. He was honorably discharge from the reserves in May of 1990 after 21 years of service. Elmer received his general education diploma from Belleville Henderson Central School under the “Operation Restoration” program established for Korean War Veterans who left school early to serve, graduating and participating in the ceremonies with the high School class of 2016.

He married Stella Card October 27th, 1951 at Asbury Methodist Church in Watertown. Mrs. Perry, affectionately know as “Mimi”, passed away December 30th, 2009.

Mr. Perry was a member of the Carpenters and Glaziers Union, Local 278, Watertown as a glazier, installer and fabricator for Pittsburg Paint and Glass, Paragon Glass and Northern Glass, all of Watertown, retiring in April of 2006. He was known at Northern Glass as the “wise old owl” for his ability to solve and troubleshoot problems that arose on the job.

Elmer attended the Ellisburg Methodist Church and was a member of the Adams VFW and the Don Rounds American Legion Post. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, traveling, hunting, fishing and camping. Mr. and Mrs. Perry were members of the East Coast Resorts Travel Group for many years.

WATERTOWN-David John Parry, 76 of Vanduzee street passed away under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County Wednesday December 26th, 2018, surrounded by family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cleveland Funeral Home, Watertown.

David was born on October 8th, 1942 to David H. Parry. David worked as a bread deliverer for Spaziani Bakery in Watertown, NY. David also enjoyed watching car racing, and the New York Yankees.

David is predeceased by his father and his aunt Margaret Parry.

A funeral service will be held at Cleveland Funeral Home in Watertown, NY at 11am on Friday January 25th, 2018. A burial will immediately follow at Brookside Cemetery.

Erwin A. Selleck of Heuvelton, passed away on December 22, 2018 in Sebastian, FL at the age of 79.

He was predeceased by his father Arthur, mother Viola Lincoln and brother Robert. He is survived by wife Rebecca, daughter Sonya, son Clay, grandson Aaron, three step-children Clifton Jr., Christina and Cavin Cook, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A marriage to Carolyn Rottman ended in divorce.

Erwin was born in Watertown, NY and graduated from Potsdam High School. He then attended Clarkson University where he earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in the field of Physics. He first taught physics at Peru State College in Nebraska and then taught at SUNY Canton for over 40 years. He was a founding member of the Grasse River Players theatre group and still participated in murder mysteries.

After retirement he volunteered at the St. Lawrence Historical Association. He and his wife had an antiques business.

A springtime burial and memorial service will be held at Adath Israel Cemetery in Massena, NY.

Eleanor F. Griffith

ELMDALE — Eleanor F. Griffith, 101, passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at her home, surrounded by her family.

A graveside service will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur in the spring with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Eleanor was born on March 1, 1917 in Gouverneur, the daughter of John and Iva Dashnaw Stammer.

She married John R. Griffith on July 9, 1937 in Watertown.

Upon graduation from high school, Eleanor received nurses training in Watertown and New York City and is an alumni of the House of the Good Samaritan. She worked many years as a registered nurse at Kinney Nursing Home and provided home health care in the Gouverneur area. Eleanor also kept busy assisting John on the family farm in Elmdale and raising her family.

Eleanor was a member of the Gouverneur First Presbyterian Church, E.J. Noble Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, and was an avid Yankees fan. She enjoyed playing solitaire on her iPad, crossword puzzles, reading, keeping a daily diary since she was in high school and traveling abroad with family members and to Florida during the winter with her cousin until just a few years ago. Eleanor also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, feeding the birds and spending time with her family.

Eleanor is survived by her two sons George Griffith and his companion Barb Laidlaw of Elmdale, John Griffith and his wife Ginger of Florida, a daughter-in-law Lillith Griffith of Fowler, 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 4 great, great grandchildren. She is also survived by her 2 sisters-in-law Shirley Stammer of Toledo, Ohio, Elsie Griffith of Elmdale, several nieces and nephews, and her special neighbor and care provider Connie LaBow who took great care of her. Eleanor is predeceased by her husband John who passed away in November 1984, her parents, 2 sons James Griffith and Tom Griffith, her daughter-in-law Nancy Griffith, and her brother John Stammer.

LOWVILLE- Lewis C. “Louie” Goutermout, 62, town of Harrisburg, died Saturday morning, December 29, 2018 at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center of Utica.

Louie was born on September 7, 1956 in Watertown the son of the late Carl H. and Cecil (Roof) Goutermout. He graduated from Lowville Academy and Central School and joined the U.S. Air Force and retired as a Senior Master Sergeant. After retirement he moved from Oklahoma back to Tug Hill. He married Deborah A. Wheeler on July 19, 2009 at the home of her parents, Allyn and Charlotte Wheeler with John B. Woods III, Justice of the Peace officiating. Lewis worked for the town of Montague for a short time when he moved back. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed hunting and riding motorcycles.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie, his children, Michael D. (Tina) Drelick of Lowville; Sarah R. Goutermout of Alabama; Megan Goutermout and Travis Goutermout both of Texas; several grandchildren; his step-children, Jessica Baker, Angela Amos, and Amber Eisel; his sisters, Wilma (Ed) Clemons of Barnes Corners; Laura (Forrest) James of Fillmore; his brother Scott C. (Dorothy) Goutermout of Lowville; his sisters-in-law, Linda (Ken) Watson Schwartz of Watertown; Mary Ann Watson of Dry Creek, LA; his father and mother-in law, Allyn (Charlotte) Wheeler of Copenhagen; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Lewis is predeceased by his brothers, Stephen D. and Weldon “Joe” Watson.

His memorial service will be at the Sundquist Funeral Home on Friday, January 4, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Keith Hardy officiating. Calling hours for family and friends will be prior to the service from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted following the service.

Arvilla L. Lafountain

CARTHAGE – Arvilla L. Lafountain, 84, formally of Alexandria St., passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at Carthage Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare.

Arvilla was born on April 8, 1934, the daughter of the late Fredrick Joseph and Josephine Elizabeth (Wager) Schloeder. She attended Carthage High School and after working in many area restaurants, went on to become a chef for her own establishment, the Castorland Hotel.

She married James F. Blackwell in 1953, which ended in divorce, and remarried to Harold Lafountain, an Air Force veteran, in 1968 in Great Bend, New York. Separated for many years, Harold passed away on February 20, 2014.

Arvilla loved to knit, crochet, and bake; she was known to have the best pies – especially lemon meringue and coconut cream -- in all of Jefferson County. She was a collector of blown glass and other treasures dear to her heart. She was a collector of strays, family members and military, whom she gave a roof over their heads and a meal in their bellies, especially during the holidays.

She is survived by her children, Leonard Blackwell (sp. Sheryl), Durham, NC; James (Skip) Blackwell (ex sp. Mary), Wendell, NC; Carl Blackwell (sp. Marsha), Pugwash, Nova Scotia; Fredrica (Rikki) Barkley (sp. Kathy dec.), Watertown, NY; ten grandchildren (Jessica, Adam, Riley, Samantha, Branden, Jimmy, Joe, John, Billy, and Henry) and 17 great-grandchildren.

Arvilla is predeceased by her daughter, Tricia Lafountain; her sister, Patricia Curry, Canton, GA; her brother, John Schloeder, Black River, NY; and her great- grandson Damien, Carthage, NY.

Calling Hours will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2019 from 1-4 PM at Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State Street, Carthage. A funeral service will immediately follow at 4 PM in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Wayne Arnold officiating. A burial will take place in the spring at Sunnyside Cemetery, Great Bend.

Nicole Lee Endres, 46 of Olmstead Dr. Watertown passed away at her home Sunday evening.

Nicole was born July 29, 1972 in Watertown the daughter of Frank and Barbara Kirkey Ames. She attended General Brown High School.

She worked as General Manager of Burger King for several years before having to retire due to illness.

A marriage ended in divorce.

She is survived by a daughter Michaela Endres, her mother Barbara Ames of Dexter, brothers: Peter and Carol Ames of Dannsville, NY, Christopher and Sheila Ames of Garner, NC, Eric and Jennifer Ames of Dexter, stepchildren: Brook Endres, Andrea Andres and Adrian Andres. She also had nine nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday January 3rd at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter at 8:00 PM with Rev. Sally Buyea of Dexter United Methodist Church officiating. The funeral service for Marjorie J. Shepard, of 6740 Lighthouse Rd. Henderson, will be Saturday, at (time) at the Henderson Methodist Church. Calling hours will be Friday from (time) at TLC Funeral Home, Inc. Internment will be in Rodman Cemetery in the spring.

She was born April 11, 1937 in Rodman, New York the daughter of Glenn I. Arloine Patterson Smith. She graduated in 1955 from Adams Center School.

She married Riley Shepard on May 4, 1957 in Watertown, New York. Mr. Shepard died April 21, 2001.

She worked for Northland Electric in Watertown as a salvage operator for 30 years. Majorie was a member of the Eastern Star and also volunteered to decorate the Henderson Methodist Church for Christmas and other holiday celebrations where she was a member. Mrs. Shepard volunteered for the Care and Share Program and the prayer group at her church She was very devoted to her children, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. She also enjoyed flower gardening and enjoyed Bluegrass Music. Mrs. Shepard will be fondly remembered for her many acts of kindness towards those in need and truly was a generous and giving person.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her name to St. Jude’s Cancer Research or to the Henderson Methodist Church.

Surviving are her two sons and two daughter in laws Riley and Carol Shepard of Watertown and George and Margo Shepard of Henderson, her three daughters and two sons in law Eldonna Ruddock of Michigan Center, MI, Mrs. Earl (Elizabeth) Lalone of Clayton, and Mrs. Richard (Lori) Flagg of Woodville, NY, her companion Fred Miller of Adams, her three brothers and three sister in laws Richard and Delores Smith of Piney Flats, TN, Jerry and Paulette Bray of Elizabethtown, TN, and Bernard and Toni Bray of Central, SC. She is also survived by her sister and her companion Marlene Cutler and John Skripnik of Spartanburg, SC, and her 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Two brothers William Smith and Glen Smith died before her.
