GOUVERNEUR – Richard W. Moore, age 79, of Gouverneur, passed away on Monday, February 4, 2019 at the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg.

Calling hours will be held at French Funeral Home in Gouverneur on Monday, February 11, 2019 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. with a Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star services at 7:00 p.m. His funeral service will be on Tuesday, February 12th at 11:00 a.m. at the Gouverneur Methodist Church Brown’s Chapel with Rev. Beth Quick officiating. Burial will follow in the Hailesboro Cemetery.

Richard was born on April 25, 1939 in Gouverneur to the late William F. and Dora A. (Bowhall) Moore. He graduated from the Gouverneur Central School in 1958 and worked as the Senior Stores Clerk II for the New York State Department of Transportation in Watertown from 1974 until his retirement on April 26, 2001.

Richard was a member of the Gouverneur First United Methodist Church where he was a Lay Leader and certified Lay Speaker. He was an active member of the Masons, serving many different positions including Grand Patriarch, and a member of the Oddfellows and Kendrew Grange.

Richard is survived by many cousins and his cats, enjoyed family history, and seemed to be related or connected to everyone.

His is predeceased by his parents and his step-mother, Evelyn Moore, who he was very close to.

Nicole M Weston, 48, passed away on Thursday, January 31st. The funeral will be held at 4pm Wednesday, February 6th at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Watertown. Calling hours will be 2-4pm Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ms. Weston was born December 2nd, 1970 in Watertown NY, a daughter of Christine Hamlin, and Edward Weston, Sr. She attended Watertown schools, and worked in the nursing field all her adult life. She was currently a medical assistant student at SUNY Jefferson and was expected to graduate early this year.

Nicole enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and Sunday beach trips with her family during the summer. She was a member of New Life Church (where she was recently baptized), and an avid animal lover and advocate. Nicole enjoyed being the life of the party, and making everybody laugh and smile. She also took great joy in helping not just her family, but everyone she came into contact with.

Nicole is survived by her father: Edward Weston Sr., her aunt: Judy Sorrel (who was a mother figure in her life), her companion: Daniel Spencer, and his son Billy Spencer; her daughter: Tara (fiancé Mackenson) Favry; her son: Anthony (fiancé Nicole) Weston; her daughter, Brittany Mallette, and her son Jeremy (fiancée Ivan) Weston. She is also survived by the children she raised as her own: Tia (Dwayne) Meeks, Tiffani Merrifield, and Dominick Jefferson.

In addition, she is survived by 11 grandchildren: Ariana, Austin, Ameir, Caylee, Bentley, Vinny Love, Mikey, Ayden, Kaydence, Chloe, and Kendal, as well as two grandchildren on the way; her siblings: Michelle Booth, Jessica Weston, Charles, and Jennifer Weston, Joshua Hamlin, Edward Weston II, Keisha Hamlin; and her cousin Heather Weston (who she considered a sister); several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as her God son, Zakkary Weston.

Nicole is predeceased by her mother, Christine Hamlin, her maternal grandparents, Richard and Mary Hamlin, her paternal grandparents, Melvin and Marion Busto-Weston, and her granddaughter, Tavanasia Nelson.

Eva R. Millard

LOWVILLE - Eva R. Millard, 96, of the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility and formerly of Bostwick Street died on Sunday evening, February 3, 2019 with her family at her side.

Mrs. Millard was born on May 18, 1922 in town Of Montague the daughter of the late Harry and Mary (Sesock) Repak. Eva attended Rectors Corners country school and graduated from Lowville Free Academy in 1939. She married Foster W. Millard on August 24, 1941 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Rev. George L. Murray officiating. Eva and Foster made their home on Bostwick Street. He died on March 27, 2007.

Eva worked at Porter Cable in Syracuse and later Easy Washer in the 1940’s as a bookkeeper. She continued her clerical work and went to work at Lowville Veneer in the 1950’s. She joined her husband at the family business, Millard’s Farm Equipment on Bostwick Street in 1959. She helped with moving the business in 1966 to the “Y” in Lowville and later helped her sons when they purchased the business.

Eva was a talented artist, and she enjoyed oil painting, her real joy was spending time with her family and cooking for them.

She is survived by her three children, Laurie and John Turck of Croghan; Al Millard and Mark and Kathy Millard all of Lowville; her 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren; her three sisters, Madeline Pitcher of Watertown; Katherine Bernat and Irene Lehman both of Lowville; her brother, John and Josephine Repak of Lowville; several nieces and nephews.

Eva is predeceased by her five sisters, Mary Doviak, Helen Toth, Anna Petrus, Alice Chambers, Martha McDonald, her two brothers, Nicholas and Anthony Repak.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. at the Sundquist Funeral Home with Rev. David Herrmann officiating. Spring burial will be in Martinsburg Cemetery.

CARTHAGE – Joseph Edward Elliott, 61, of Wrape Rd., passed away on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at his home, under the loving care of his family and Jefferson County Hospice.

Joseph was born on September 26, 1957 in Ogdensburg, New York, a son of the late Joseph Daniel and Marcella Ann (Keeler) Elliott.

In 1977 he met Crystal Elaine Runkles. The two married in 1984.

He retired as a mechanic from American Wood Splitters, and enjoyed working on cars, fishing and drinking with friends.

Joseph is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Crystal; four children, Beau (Kristi) Elliott of Munns Corners; Susan (Richard) Howland of Carthage; Joseph (companion, Ashley Roenfeldt) Elliott of West Carthage; and Clayton (companion, Amber Wheeler) Elliott of Sandy Creek; six siblings, Debra Windover of Carthage; Jean (Dennis) O’Dett of Carthage; Merry-Jo (Vern) Hubbard of Carthage; Lori (Robert) Major of Carthage; Connie Elliott of Carthage; and Sandra Elliott of Carthage; an aunt, Barbara Shatraw of Copenhagen; 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way.

He is predeceased by two brothers who passed during adolescence, Daniel and Gary Elliott, and a sister, Mary Margaret.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 from 1-4 PM at Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage. A funeral service will immediately follow in the funeral home Chapel at 4:00 PM with Father Donald Robinson officiating. Burial will be held in the Spring at New St. James Catholic Cemetery, Carthage.

Edward S. Hirch, age 53 of Watertown passed away suddenly at the Samaritan Medical Center ER Sunday evening.

Edward was born July 29, 1965 in Ridgewood, NY the son of Herbert and Ellen Cobari Hirch. He graduated from General Brown Central School and attended JCC for Hospitality.

He married Lucinda A. Burlingame on July 23, 2005 in Watertown.

Edward worked for several years at Price Chopper in Watertown and recently was a cook at IHOP in Watertown. He enjoyed traveling, watching movies and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife Lucinda, his mother Ellen Hirch of Dexter and three sisters: Ellen Harrell and Scott Mitchell of Limerick, Patty and Randall Bischoff of Watertown and Julia and Mark VanSchaick of Clayton. He also has nieces, nephews and cousins surviving.

A funeral mass is tentively scheduled for Thursday 11:00 am at Immaculate Conception Church of Brownville. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter. Max Herman Levenson

Max Herman Levenson, 98, of Pikesville, Maryland died Feb. 2, 2019.

Born in Watertown on Nov. 5, 1920, he was the son of Samuel and Anna Levenson. He was salutatorian of the Watertown High School Class of 1938. After serving in the 30th Infantry Division, U.S. Army, during World War II, he moved to Baltimore, where he worked as an Internal Revenue Service agent until 1957. Mr. Levenson, who earned a law degree from the University of Baltimore in 1960, was employed as a manager in the tax department of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (later CSX Corp.) until his retirement in 1986.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Annette Sybil Levenson, who died in 2006, and his siblings, Bernard, Celia, Dorothy and Sadie. He is survived by his sons, Dr. Steven A. Levenson of Towson, MD, Edward J. Levenson of Pikesville, Gordon M. Levenson and his wife Ruth of Baltimore; and nieces and nephews.

Patricia A. Nuffer

WATERTOWN - Patricia A. Nuffer, 70, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 31, 2019. She resided at Samaritan Keep Home for the last few years, where she was well cared for by the loving staff.

Pat was born March 22, 1948 to Joseph and Lillian (Palmerton) Zollo. She married Donald Nuffer on September 15, 1967 in Phoenix, NY and the couple resided in Adams, NY for most of their married life.

She had several jobs in her life including bartending and homemaking, but her favorite was caring for and spoiling her grandchildren. She loved playing cards and going to bingo. Pat and her sister Linda were regulars to playing pitch and Friday night bingo. She was well known for her fun and caring attitude and will be missed by many.

She is survived by her husband Donald D. Nuffer of Watertown; brother, Mark (Sandy) Zollo, Charlotte NC; son, Charles (Joy) Nuffer, Rodman, NY; two daughters, Tammy Taylor (fiancé Mark Stroisch) Eagle River, Alaska; Ann Clement, Adams, NY; seven grandchildren, Michelle McNeely, Kyle Taylor, Travis Nuffer, Joshua Nuffer, Benjamin Nuffer, Brandon Clement, and Brooke Clement; and two great grandchildren, Riley McNeely and Orin McNeely.

She was predeceased by her sister, Linda Larkin who passed away on March 17, 2018.

There will be a celebration of Pat’s life on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Life Church of the Nazarene, 535 Thompson Blvd, Watertown, NY 13601, with the Reverend Robert Tharp presiding. There will be a luncheon at the church to immediately follow the service. All are welcome.

Steffenhagen, a former resident of 35 Riverside Drive, Canton, will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the Madrid Hotel, 1896 St Hwy 345, in Madrid, NY. All are welcome to join the family for a luncheon. Mr. Steffenhagen passed away Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, VT. Larry is survived by his former companion, Linda Bonnewell; their son together, Larry J. Steffenhagen and wife April Lauzon and grandchildren Donovan and Amelia Lauzon; his former daughter-in-law Amanda Steffenhagen and grandchildren Greysen and Josephine Steffenhagen; his daughter Donna and husband John Stuck and grandchildren Alex, Mason and Addison; his daughter Kimberly Bonnewell and grandchildren Isis Bonnewell and Nicholas O’Dell; former wife Linda Schleyer and adopted daughter Laurie Steffenhagen; and his companion V.V. Lasalle and sons Christopher and Joshua Woodruff. He is also survived by his four brothers Gary, Lenny “Buster”, Alfred, and Raymond Steffenhagen, his sister Evelyn Williams, a past companion, Janetee Taylor, Violet’s brother Bill and Renee Lashelle, along with the Fregoe family and many nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his brother Thomas Steffenhagen and adopted daughter Karen Steffenhagen.

Larry was born in Rochester, NY on July 10, 1945, along with his twin brother Gary, to the late Charles and Olive Joselyn Steffenhagen. After graduating high school, he was a professional mover for 27 years with the Neptune Worldwide Moving company in Rochester. He drove truck for many years until he was forced to retire due to health issues. Larry had a love for music, bowling, baseball, football and fishing. He was a lifelong dedicated fan of the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Browns. He lived most of his life in Rochester, NY but in 1998, Larry and his son moved to Norwood where he gained even more friends and family. He often enjoyed hanging at Hometown Café visiting with family, friends and waiting for his grandkids to show up for ice cream. Larry was a man with a huge heart and will be greatly missed by many. Eva Duppert Shambo

Constableville- Eva Duppert Shambo, 81, died on Monday, February 4, 2019 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Utica, N.Y. after many health struggles.

She was with her loving family at the time of her death. Born in Lowville, N.Y. on March 30, 1937, the daughter of Wendelin and Catherine Bernholz Duppert, she was raised by her aunt, Lorena Bernholz following her parents’ death. A lifelong resident of Constableville, she graduated from Constableville High School in 1954 and went on to graduate in 1955 with an Office dministration degree from Central City Business Institute in Syracuse.

Eva married the love of her life, Donald Shambo, on September 3, 1955 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Constableville.

For 36 years, Eva worked at a job she loved as first a postal clerk and then as Postmaster of the Constableville Post Office, retiring in 1984. She enjoyed time spent with her family and friends, baking, sewing, knitting and canning. For several years, Eva and Don enjoyed taking the four grandchildren camping each summer in Lake George.

Eva’s pride in her small village of “C-ville” was unsurpassed. She, along with June Scheidelman and Jim Northam, founded the C-villairs Community Marching Band in 1963 where she directed as well as played trumpet for many years. Eva stayed involved with the band through this summer’s alumni performance. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Church Alter and Rosary Society in Constableville, the 6913 VFW Ladies Auxilary in Lowville, a member/volunteer of the Constable Hall Historical Society and a volunteer with the Constableville Fire Department’s many events. She was known for her leadership, compassion and sense of humor as well as a valued member of the community.

Eva is survived by her beloved husband, Donald, of 63 years and by her devoted children, Cynthia (Joe) Dowd of Wynantskill, N.Y., Susan (Randy) Conway of Turin, N.Y., Donna (Jeff) Robinson of New Hartford, N.Y. and John (Rita) Shambo of Bridgewater, M.A. ; four cherished grandchildren, Derek Conway, Jacob Conway, Kaitlin Dowd and Connor Dowd. She was also survived by her sister Ann Colleen of Danville, I.L. and James Duppert of Constableville, as well as several nieces and nephews. Eva was predeceased by her sisters Margaret Petrovitz and Barbara Narrow.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Lawrence Marullo, on Friday at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Constableville. Immediately following the services, relatives and friends are invited to attend a luncheon at the church hall. Food donations are greatly appreciated. Albert ‘Al’ Joseph Melisko

Albert ‘Al’ Joseph Melisko, 90, of Chester, Maryland, formerly of Gouverneur, New York, passed away

peacefully on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at home, under the care of his family and Hospice.

Al was born on January 11, 1929, in Deferiet, NY where he attended school and lived in Gouverneur and Wanakena most of his life.

Al was a Korean War Veteran with the U.S. Army and served 13 months proudly in the 179th Infantry

Regiment, Company K where he earned the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1952. Al was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal w/1 Bronze Service Star, Combat Infantry Badge, and UN Service Medal.

Al worked in the mines for 36 years at Balmat, retiring from Zinc Corporation of America in 1992.

Al enjoyed building home projects, bowling, and keeping his mind sharp. He spent time at the VFW and American Legion. Al was rarely seen without his Korean War Veteran ball cap. He was an avid collector of bi-centennial ‘drummer boy’ quarters and no advertising ink pen was safe if left unattended. Al was a connoisseur of cheap beer and a master of completing 1,000-piece puzzles.

Al was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 6338 and the America Legion Post 0065 in Gouverneur. He

was greatly honored to participate in military honors at the annual Memorial Day and Veterans Day

ceremonies.

Al is predeceased by his wife Betty of 33 years, father Stephen Melisko, mother Helen Gurgus Melisko, sisters Helen and Agnes, and brothers Stephen, Jr., Robert, and Donald. He is survived by his brother Edward, five children, seven grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

William Williams Jr. aka Junior aka Thumper

Hailesboro - William Williams Jr. aka Junior aka Thumper passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at his home.

A celebration of life will be hosted in Junior’s honor at the Gouverneur Vol. Fire Department on Sunday, February 17th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Funeral arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Junior was born on June 10, 1969 in Sharon, CT, the son of William and Ruth Ellen Conlin Williams.

He graduated from Gouverneur High School and worked at CIVES Steel Corporation for nearly 30 years.

Thumper had served in the Gouverneur Vol. Fire Department and Gouverneur Vol. Rescue Squad for several years. He enjoyed working on old cars, watching local stock car racing, and attending car shows, never missing the Syracuse Nationals. Thumper also enjoyed time spent in the woods hunting, hitting the dance floor, and spending time with his family, especially his mother and son.

Junior is survived by his son Cody Williams of Hailesboro, his mother Ruth Williams of Gouverneur, his many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is predeceased by his father William.

Emilio Melendez “Poppie”

WATERTOWN – Emilio Melendez “Poppie”, 94, passed away on Monday, February 4, 2019 at Samaritan Medical Center.

He had been a resident at Samaritan Summit Village for several years.

Emilio was born on April 5, 1924 in Puerto Rico, the son of Claudio and Rosa (Maria) Melendez. He graduated from high school in 1950 and went on to work as a laborer for the United States Army.

On August 30, 1944 he married Alicia Santana in Puerto Rico.

He will be remembered as a friendly, fun-loving person who was very generous and loved giving back to others. He was an animal person who loved his pets very much. He also enjoyed listening to music and watching movies.

He was a former member of the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Carthage.

He is survived by a son, Emilio A. (Ruth) Melendez of Evans Mills as well as two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Ann.

A graveside service will be held in the Spring at St. James Cemetery.

Massena: Tammy Lee Holliday, passed away at her family home, surrounded by her loving and devoted family on Sunday (February 3, 2019) after a long courageous battle. Tammy was 56 years old.

Tammy is survived by her Husband Richard, and their two children, son Cody and Liz Holliday of Chapel Hill, NC, and daughter Allison Holliday and companion Maique Roque of Malone, NY along with her grandchildren Kinsley and Piper Holliday. She is also survived by her siblings, Mary Jo O’Geen of Massena, NY, Darlene and Kent Yancik of Tempe, AZ, Loralee Marsh of Durham, NC, and her mother Mary Jeanne Richards of Massena, NY, along with nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and her baby boy ”Blitz” the dog.

Tammy was predeceased by her father Jerry Richards in 2003, a brother-in-law, Anthony “Tony” O’Geen IV in 2018 and a Ryan Yancik in infancy.

Tammy was born to Jerry and Mary Jeanne (Laneuville) Richards on June 3, 1962 in Massena, NY. She attended Massena schools and graduated from Massena Central High School in 1980. Tammy continued her education by obtaining her Associates degree from Canton ATC in Mechanical Technology. And shortly after, started her career at ALCOA in the machine shop dept. in 1984. She retired after 30 years of service as a maintenance machinist in 2014. She was married to her loving husband Richard Holliday in Massena at St. Joseph’s Church on July 23, 1983.

Tammy was also a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church, Massena and belonged to the “Read between the Wines Book Club”, 25 year Club at ALCOA, and participated as a driving force when it came to the construction of the ALCOA floats used in Massena Parades for years.

She enjoyed camping, kayaking and boating on the St. Lawrence River. Boating other favorite pastimes included playing cards with her family, working on puzzles with her mother, refinishing antiques she had found on her many outings and her greatest joy of all is spending time with her grandchildren.

Friends and family are welcome to call the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena on Friday February 8, 2019 from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

A funeral Mass will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday February 9, 2019 at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Mark Reilly officiating. A graveside burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

CHAUMONT- Marshall Marshall of County Route 125 passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019 under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County. Arrangements have been entrusted to Becker-Cleveland Funeral Home, Chaumont.

Marshall was born on March 9, 1950 to Ray and Kathryn (Adams) Marshall in Watertown, NY.

Marshall dedicated his time to family and his life’s work to Education. His most satisfying professional accomplishments were associated with his position as Superintendent of Pulaski Academy & Central Schools. His commitment to impacting the lives of others spilled over into every aspect of his life. He enjoyed sailing, traveling, and doing home improvements. His hallmark was not just his name, but also his booming, quick laugh.

Important community service organizations that he played an active role in were Rural Migrant Ministries, Pulaski Economic Development Task Force, and the Town of Lyme Planning Board.

Marshall is survived by his mother, his wife DeEtte (Root) Marshall, his daughter Katrina (Rick) Homer of Cleveland, OH, and his son Eric (Lisa) Marshall of Glen Park, NY.

Marshall is predeceased by his father.
