George Pobedinsky passed away on February 14, 2019. He was born in the South Bronx in 1951 to the late George Pobedinsky and Ludmilla Bogdanova Pobedinsky.

He earned a BFA from Syracuse University, and worked for Onondaga County Parks for many years creating displays and murals. He also portrayed characters such as Hans the Cooper at the Salt Museum and the New York State Fair, and Père Noel at Ste. Marie among the Iroquois. He taught himself to be a cooper, making barrels and buckets using methods from the 1850’s salt industry in Syracuse.

He was an artist from his earliest years, specializing in printmaking, oil, acrylic and water color as well as wood and ceramic sculpture. His work has been featured in publications in the US, UK and Germany, and he has had several shows in New York City, Syracuse and the Hudson Valley. Some of his recent work can be seen online at the Saatchi Gallery/Pictify (https://www.saatchiart.com/georgepobedinsky).

He was a wonderful cook; his family and friends have been trying for years to sleuth out all the ingredients in the amazing dishes he prepared. He made eggplant parmesan for Thanksgiving every year and nobody missed the turkey. He loved gardening, growing roses, fruit trees and tons of vegetables.

He was a kind, loving and compassionate man, strong enough to build everything from bookcases and children’s toys to house additions, but gentle and comforting to anyone who needed his help. He volunteered his skills and talents to his churches, and created wonderful floats for Saint Patrick’s Day parades in Syracuse.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Sutton Pobedinsky; his children, Margaret Pobedinsky of Alexandria, VA, and John and Joni Pobedinsky of Buffalo; his brother Alexander Pobedinsky of Syracuse; his first wife and mother of his children, Marilyn Beckley of Syracuse; his granddaughters Mila and Nadine Pobedinsky; his aunt Helen Andreyewsky of Peekskill, and

many nieces, nephews and cousins. George was predeceased by his parents and his brother Valentin Pobedinsky.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 20th at Sacred Heart Church, 26 Still Road, Monroe, NY. Interment will follow in Novo-Diveevo Russian Orthodox Cemetery in Nanuet.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Orange Regional Medical Center 4 South, Palliative Care, and Hospice, who took care of all of us in George’s last weeks.
