Our beloved father, Pastor Earl W. Reff, 71, Pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church on Arsenal Street, stepped into the wonder of heaven on Sunday, Feb. 24th, surrounded by his loving family. He had been a patient at the Samaritan Medical Center since Feb. 13th. Family and friends are invited to gather with us to honor his life on Friday, at 11am, at the Fellowship Baptist Church with calling hours on Thursday evening from 7-9pm.

The youngest of six children, Earl was born November 28th, 1947, in Clayton, the son of Earl Franklin and Louise Harding Calhoun Reff. In his youth he attended Lyme Central School in Chaumont.

Cherished husband of 52 years, he married his sweetheart and love, Linda Corwin, on April 15th, 1967, at the Clayton Methodist Church.

Earl worked for Morrison’s Furniture for nearly 20 years before following God’s calling on his life to enter the ministry. He attended Spurgeon Baptist Bible College in Mulberry, Florida, graduating in 1995. After graduation the Lord guided his steps back to Watertown, and he became the Pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in November of 1995.

A life abundantly blessed, he was a kind and compassionate man who loved and was loved by many. He was a man who invested himself in people and shared his great faith not only through his words, but by the actions of his life. He enjoyed wood working and carving, playing his guitar, hunting, fishing and watching the birds on his back deck. He was the Dean at Moose River Baptist Youth Camp for many years, where he was always in the midst of the activities with the children and was a favorite target of the “dunking booth”. To his own children he is most remembered for making time for the little things and being available for the big things.

Surviving besides his wife Linda are three daughters, Lorrie (Philip) Weber of Lyons Falls, Lisa Cordero of Watertown, and Tammy (Robert) Stoudt of Watertown; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; five sisters, Nancy Walters of Rochester, Carol Happ of Batavia, Joyce Reed of Albion, Rosalyn Goutremont of Chaumont, and Norma Zanker of Tennessee; nieces and nephews; two Aunts, Gloria Calhoun and Clara (Polly) Reff.

Donald W. Zahn

Donald W. Zahn, 87, of Watertown, passed February 22nd while at The Grand Nursing Home in Rome, NY, where he had been a resident since December.

Calling hours will be held from 3:00 - 5:00pm Friday, March 1st, at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home in Watertown. Burial services will be conducted in the spring at the family plot in the Black River Cemetery.

He was born in Carthage, NY on October 27th, 1931, the son of Herman L Zahn and Vera Weir Zahn. He was predeceased by his older brother Herman L Zahn, Jr, and recently, by his younger sister Marcia J Smith. He is survived by his nephew, Dr. Patrick B Smith, Clay, NY. He attended and graduated from Black River High School.

Donald and his brother continued the operation of the family dairy farm started in the 30’s and 40’s by their father and always beamed with pride in highlighting their accomplishments over the decades in expanding the farm, the land and the equipment needed to produce high quality milk. He labored 7 days a week, often with late hours, but did so out of his love of the land and the business. Along with the dairy farm, they acquired an automobile scrap business in Felts Mills in the 80’s which was another source of pride as he helped many people find an end for enumerable cars, trucks and everything on wheels. He could tell you an inventory of every item in the yard, where it came from, its history, and of course, its value. In addition to all this, they decided to add a sand and gravel business and spent a decade mining their land in Rutland and Felts Mills. As time passed, as it is for many, each of these loves became someone else’s to transform. Don would recount the years of people, history and accomplishments made to friends, old and new, and this brought him much happiness.

In the end, Don succumbed to age and the affects of dementia. As any family afflicted with this disease can attest, medical and social support is helpful to the overall health of not only the patient, but of the family as well. If you have friends or family suffering with dementia or Alzheimers, reach out in any capacity you can to offer support, friendship, or just a few minutes to listen.

Winifred was born on March 14th, 1918, daughter of the late Archie and Jessie (Wynne) Bartlett in Potsdam, NY. She attended Potsdam area schools and worked on the family farm. She married Bryce Crump on November 12, 1936. Most dear to her heart, besides her son Elmer, was her nephew, Billy Durgan, to whom she raised as her own since the age of two, and her nephew Frankie Gonyea. In the 1950s, she worked at the Potsdam Club as a cook, and also did housework cleaning and sewing for people in town. She found love again and on September 12, 1966, she married Ernest “Pete” Dumont in New Hampshire. After the passing of her husband Pete, Winifred managed a motel and worked as a cook at a restaurant in Alexandria Bay for 6 years, then returned to Potsdam and worked as an elderly caretaker. In her spare time, Winifred so enjoyed crocheting, sewing, crafting, loved to cook and collect recipes. Also known as an independent, industrious, and determined woman, she managed to live by herself until the age of 98 until her health began to waiver. Thank you “Grandma Winnie” for 100 years of family stories and memories…
