Mr. Charles W. Hayes, age 84 of Potsdam, NY passed away on Friday, March 29, 2019 at the Massena Memorial Hospital. Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 2nd from 2-7pm. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, April 3rd at St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam, NY at 11am with Rev. Stephen Rocker celebrant. Burial with military honors will take place in the spring at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Colton, NY. Contributions in his memory can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley or to the Potsdam Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Ellen Katherine Hayes; sons Daniel (Gayle) Hayes of Potsdam, Edward (Carrie) Hayes of South Colton, Patrick (Cynthia) Hayes of Baldwinsville and William (Beth) Hayes of Potsdam; a daughter Debora (Ernie) Charleston; grandchildren Kristy, Edward, Amanda, Katie, Michael, Aaron, James, Carson, Jarrett, Reaghan, Greg and Whitney; 13 great grandchildren; siblings Jerry (Diane) Hayes, Joe (Jane) Hayes, Ted Hayes, Cynthia (Dean) Lamphere, Kathy (Randy) LaBar, Susan Hayes and Joanne McGill and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by a son Michael John Hayes in 1964; sisters and spouses Margaret (Erwin) Stone, Mary Jane (Lee) Lindner and a brother and spouse Timothy (Diane) Hayes and a brother in law Lyle McGill.

Mr. Charles W. Hayes was born on July 6, 1934 in Potsdam, NY to the late Henry Hayes and Ella Ellis. He was a 1952 graduate of Potsdam Central High School. He worked at the Ovalwood Dish until enlisting in the United States Army from 1954, with close cousins Sam LaShomb and Dan Hayes. He served until 1956, then served in the reserves until 1961. He then went to work for Niagara Mohawk as a meter reader, later as a traveling operator for the company.

Charlie really enjoyed spending time with his family both at his home and at their family camp. He was a Roaring Brook honorary member.

Sherrill “Sherry” D. Lashbrooks, 72, of Gouverneur passed away Monday, March 25 with her loving husband and family by her side.

Sherry was born October 21, 1946 in Gouverneur to Albert and Phila Porter Prashaw. Sherry attended Gouverneur Central Schools.

She married Wayne Lashbrooks on February 9, 1963 at the Church of Nazarene with Rev. Shaw officiating.

Sherry owned and operated Sherry’s House of Crafts.

Sherry enjoyed traveling, reading, crafts and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Wayne, a son Robert and his wife Jeannette Lashbrooks, a daughter Nicole Lashbrooks Shippee, grandchildren Kyle Lashbrooks, Miranda and David Rohe, Alec Shippee, great-grandchildren Jaxen and Mireya Rohe, a sister Roxanne Serviss and several nieces and nephews, all of Gouverneur.

Sherry is predeceased by her parents, a daughter Laura, a son-in-law William “Billy” Shippee and a sister Sandra Godfrey.

There will be a celebration of life for Sherry on Sunday, April 7, 2019 at VFW in Gouverneur at 1:00 p.m.

NORWOOD — A Mass of Christian Burial for 74-year-old John P. Margittay, a resident of 3511 County Rt. 47, Norwood, will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Visitation in Norfolk with Rev. Garry Giroux presiding. A spring burial will be held in the Hale Cemetery, Norfolk. Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood on Monday, April 1, 2019 from 3-6 p.m. John passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 29, 2019 at his home.

John is survived by his children John and Ann Margittay Jr., Norwood; Emily and Kevin Enslow, Norwood; Betsy Darabon and Robert Myers, Norwood; Brian Bernard, Weedsport and Barbara Bernard, Pompano Beach, FL. John is also survived by his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a sister, Margaret and Lawrence Connelly, Norfolk.

Born in New York City on August 29, 1944 to the late John G. and Margaret E. Orosz Margittay, John was a self-employed farmer and mechanic. He loved spending time working on the family farm and was also a very talented machinist and mechanic. John also has worked for several local business as well, which include Sheehan’s, Barrett’s, Champion Sand and Gravel and Mike Knowlton.

He was a member of the NRA and currently was the superintendent of the Hale Cemetery Association. John loved to visit with his family and friends and enjoyed hunting in his free time.

Frances R. Hebert

COPENHAGEN — Frances R. Hebert, 89, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Frances was born on March 27, 1930 in Chaumont, NY, a daughter to the late Ernest and Winifred (Reff) Reasoner. She graduated from Cape Vincent Central School in 1948. She went on to work as an operator for New York Telephone from 1948 to 1952. In 1952, she became the bookkeeper for the family farm in Copenhagen.

On June 14, 1952, Frances married Sylvio A. Hebert in St. Patrick’s Church, Watertown. The couple operated a dairy farm in Copenhagen until their retirement in 1987, when they turned the business over to their son, Ronald. Sylvio passed away on October 5, 1998.

She enjoyed going to church, sewing, reading, word search, baking, mowing the lawn, but most of all she loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and she also attended a widow’s group once a month.

Frances is survived by her children, Ronald Hebert, Copenhagen; Dennis (Juli) Hebert, Copenhagen; Robert Hebert, Copenhagen; LuAnn (Jon) Ostrowski, Copenhagen; Nancy (Shawn) Randall, Cortland; five grandchildren, Hiedi (Caleb) Santamour; Jeremy Berrus; Taylor Berrus; Andrew Randall; Paige Randall; 2 step-grandchildren, Amber Coulombe; Tyler Ostowski; one great-grandchild, Levi Santamour; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is predeceased by four brothers, Kenneth Reasoner; Alan Reasoner; Herman Reasoner; Harley Reasoner; a sister, Lucille Mulzoff; a grandson, Connor in 2018.

A funeral mass will be held on April 2, 2019 at 11AM in St. Mary’s Church, Copenhagen with Father Donald Robinson officiating. The burial will take place in the spring. A reception will immediately follow the service at the Copenhagen Fire Hall.

Joyce T. Flitcroft, 91, Felts Mills, died March 30, 2019 at Samaritan Summit Village

Mrs. Flitcroft was born March 22, 1928, in Massena NY a daughter of Bernard P. Keenan and Margaret Garey Keenan.

Mrs. Flitcroft graduated from Brasher Falls High School in 1946 as valedictorian of her class, the Mercy School of nursing in 1948 and received her bachelor’s degree from Empire State College in 1977. A marriage to Wayne Corbin ended in divorce. On February 14, 1981, she married James B. Flitcroft in Watertown. Mrs. Flitcroft began her career as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital; later she was a case worker for Jefferson County Social Service and retired in 1987 as a registered nurse for JRC.

Mrs. Flitcroft was a communicant of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church and Saint Paul’s Catholic Church, Black River and belonged to Mercy Hospital School of Nursing Alumni. She enjoyed skiing, golfing, snowmobiling, camping and traveling with her husband.

Surviving besides her husband are two daughters and their husbands Karen (John) Graffi, Felts Mills, Constance Corbin (Randy Flitcroft), Raleigh, NC, three stepchildren, Bonnie (Richard) Vandyke, Lacona, Gale (Gary) Parker, Copenhagen, and Sue Johnson, Syracuse. A son Gary, a brother John “Jack” Keenan and a sister Patricia Dacey died before her.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 11 am-1pm at D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc., a funeral service will follow at the funeral home with Reverend Robert Decker officiating. Rose Oliverio, 97, formerly of Niagara Falls, NY, died March 27, 2019 at her home with family by her side.

Born in Niagara Falls, NY, Rose was a homemaker most of her adult life. Her greatest pleasure was taking care of her family and being a devoted wife and mother, and showed her love through her cooking and baking. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who made her later years full of adventure and fun.

Rose was the daughter of Frank and Angeline Sinatra. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Sam Oliverio, sister, Frances Kumm and brother, Andrea.

She is survived by her daughters Pat (Bill) Karis and Andrea (Ken) Virtuoso. Also her grandchildren and great-grandchildren Jacqueline Karis, Lauren (Joe) Motzko and sons Sammy, Johnny, and Sully, and Billy Karis (Jan Buonanno) and son Freddy, and Erica (Matt) Gerber and son Owen.

A Christian mass at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church and burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, both in Niagara Falls, NY, will be held at a later date.

Charlotte A. Raymond

Charlotte A. Raymond, 76, of County Rte 62, Watertown passed away March 27, 2019 at the Hospice at Ellis Farm, Watertown.

Charlotte was born February 25, 1943 in Mayfield, Kentucky the daughter of Schuyler and Racine Alexander Colwell. She graduated from Sackets Harbor High School.

She worked as a housekeeper until she married William F. Raymond on July 2, 1966 at the United Presbyterian Church in Sackets Harbor.

After her marriage she helped her husband with wood crafting and small gas engine repairs and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. William passed away May 22, 2010.

She is survived by three sisters: Sandra R. Colwell and Nancy J. Colwell of Sulphur Springs and Beverly J. Wright of Clearwater, Florida. Sister-in-law Muriel Bickom of Brewerton and brother-in-law Lyle Raymond of Groton also survive, as well as her nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday April 5th at the United Presbyterian Church in Sackets Harbor at 10:30 am with Rev. Leon “Toby” Schilling officiating. Burial will be in Sulphur Springs Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours will be Thursday from 6-8 PM at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter. Donations may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County or Meals on Wheels.

Jane H. Munson, 90 formerly of Dexter, passed away Saturday morning at Carthage Rehab and Nursing Facility.

Jane was born March 25, 1929 in Cortland, NY the daughter of Daniel C. and Minerva M. Smith Hall. She graduated from Watertown High School and also did extension courses at SUNY Potsdam.

She married Reginald G. Munson on June 12, 1948 at Emmanuel Congregational Church in Watertown. The couple lived in Watertown and summered on Pillar Point and retired there.

Jane worked as Library Assistant at Ohio Street School. She was a member of Dexter United Methodist Church, Past President of PTA at Ohio Street School, a Relay for Life member and on the Board of Elections for Jefferson County and Home Bureau.

She is survived by sons Stephen and Sherri Munson of Watertown, Scott Munson of Syracuse, daughter Susan Munson and her husband Roy Fulkerson of Watertown. Grandchildren include: Patrick, Zoel, Jessica, Emilie, Scott, Chris, Whitney, David, Tera, Michelle, Grant, Ashley, Sean, Brittany, Randy, and Angela. Several great-grandchildren and a brother, Daniel and Pat Hall of Brownville, and nieces and nephews also survive.

She was predeceased by her husband Reginald on April 3, 1998 and her daughter Sandra Schnorr.

Funeral services will be Saturday April 6th at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter at 4:00 pm with Pastor Jim Hayes officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Dexter Cemetery. LYONS FALLS — Phillip J. Baxter, 60, of Seymour Ave. passed away at his home on Saturday morning, March 30, 2019 under the loving care of his family and Lewis County Hospice.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service. Burial will be held privately by the family in Penny Settlement Cemetery, Lyonsdale. Phillip is survived by his mother, Laurine Baxter of Lyons Falls; four siblings, Patricia Cole of North Clarendon, VT, Henry Baxter Jr. (Laurie) of Lyons Falls, Elizabeth (Kenneth) Mooney of Port Leyden, Paul (Melissa) Baxter of Port Leyden; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and several cousins. He is predeceased by his father, Henry H. Baxter; and a brother Steven Baxter.

Phillip was born on September 6, 1958 in Munich, Germany, a son of the late Henry H. Baxter and Laurine Clair Baxter and graduated from South Lewis Central School in 1976. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1976-1980 in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and New London, CT. After his service, he worked for various construction companies over the years. Most recently, he worked for Lunco of Carthage and North South Connection of Boonville. He enjoyed crossword puzzle books and collecting small pencil sharpeners. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

William Raymond Burns, Jr.

William Raymond Burns, Jr., 80, of Watertown, N. Y. passed away Friday, March 29, 2019, at Samaritan Medical Center with his wife of 56 years, JoAnn, at his side.

Born on September 21, 1938 in Buffalo, N. Y., Bill was the only child of William R. Burns, Sr. and Mary Campbell Burns. The family moved to Newton Falls, N. Y. where Bill graduated from Clifton - Fine High School in 1956. He graduated in 1960 from Oswego State with a BS degree in industrial arts education. It was at Oswego where he met his wife, JoAnn Marguerite Porecco of Utica, N. Y. Bill and JoAnn were married at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Utica on August 25, 1962. They moved to Watertown where Bill was an industrial arts teacher and driver ed instructor at General Brown School District from 1962 - 1969. In 1965 he earned his MS degree in education from Oswego State. From 1969 - 1994 he taught industrial arts and technology at Case Jr. High School for the Watertown City School District until his retirement. JoAnn also taught first grade for the Watertown District until her retirement two years after Bill.

The couple spent nearly 20 years during winter months in Sarasota, Florida. Bill enjoyed golfing in Northern New York during the summer months with golfing buddies and socializing over coffee with friends. Bill was a devout parishioner of Holy Family Church, a devoted husband and an avid Notre Dame sports fan. Like his favorite college team, Bill was a “Fighting Irishman” who privately and courageously battled metastatic cancer for the last several years of his life.

Bill is survived by his wife and JoAnn’s late sister Donna’s husband, Charles Meade of Florida, formerly of Syracuse. Others surviving him are long time friends Doug and Cherie Danforth of Clayton and their extended family.

There will be no calling hours but a funeral mass will be held at Holy Family Church in Watertown with Father Steven Murray officiating on Saturday, April 13, 2019, at 11:00 am. Arrangements are entrusted to Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown. A private burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Dewitt, N. Y. will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of William R. Burns, Jr. may be given to the Sisters of the Precious Blood at 400 Pratt St., Watertown, N. Y. 13601. Douglas A. Welbourn, Sr.

Douglas A. Welbourn, Sr., Watertown, passed away Thursday, March 28th at his residence. He was 67 years old.

Born January 23, 1952 in Watertown, Douglas was a son to Floyd T. and Mary F. (Hudson) Welbourn. He was educated in the Watertown School District. Following his education, he enlisted with the United States Marine Corps serving in Vietnam. He was discharged in October of 1970.

Douglas worked as a cab driver at several local cab companies. He was also previously employed by Jefferson County and Chapin Living Waters.

Douglas was a member of Watertown’s First Baptist Church.

He is survived by his children: Douglas A. Jr. of Adams, Tarah and Mark Eastman of Adams, Megan and Robert Durst of Virginia, Alissa and Justin Waite of Adams; and his siblings: Mary A. and Terry Macadam, William and Darlene Welbourn. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 2 nieces, and 2 great-nephews.

Besides his parents, Douglas is predeceased by a son, Samuel, and his step-father, Chauncey Lambert.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of his family. Burial will follow the service in Brookside Cemetery.

Ruth E. Reynolds

Gouverneur - Ruth E. Reynolds, 89, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at her home under the care of family and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.

A graveside service will be held in the Spring in Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Ruth was born in Gouverneur on July 28, 1929, the daughter of Everett and Bessie (Stone) Peck.

She graduated from Gouverneur High School and attended the Watertown School of Commerce.

Ruth married Welby N. Reynolds on June 16, 1951 in Gouverneur.

Her husband passed away just 6 weeks ago and now they are together again. Throughout their last years, Welby and Ruth were fortunate to have their daughter Susie and a special care giver Robyn, so they could remain at home.

Ruth was employed by Senator Paul Graves after graduation until her marriage, and the couple then purchased their farm just outside of Gouverneur on Old Route 58 North. She and Welby raised their family on the farm until it was sold to their son Matthew in 1987.

The couple enjoyed riding motorcycles and taking the family downhill skiing. Ruth also enjoyed riding her bicycle, running, gardening, and was known as an excellent seamstress and for quilt making.

Ruth enjoyed her grandchildren as they would congregate at the farm on weekends and have extended stays during the Summer months. She was a loving Mom and Grandmother, known for a great attitude, good hugs and a nurturing spirit. The grandkids might highlight the many trips to the Dollar Store with Grandma the red sports car.

She is survived by her six children Scott Reynolds of Gulfport, FL, Joel Welby and Kay Reynolds of Williston, VT, Susan Sorrell of Columbia, SC, Randy and Beth Reynolds of Sheldon, VT, Gregg and Nancy (Tovey) Reynolds of Williston, VT, Matthew Reynolds of Gouverneur, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ruth is also survived by her sister Marjorie Hughes of Brownville and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, her parents, and her brothers Richard Peck and Kenley Peck.

Daniel J. Junker

Daniel J. Junker, 60, of Waipahu, Hawaii and formerly of Falmouth, Mass., died unexpectedly at his home on March 28, 2019. He was born December 11, 1958, in Burlington, VT, the son of Audrey J (Lonergan) & the late Joseph Junker. As his father was in the Air Force, the family moved often before settling in Falmouth. Danny was a long-time resident of Falmouth, MA and moved to Hawaii in 2012. He attended Norwich University before graduating from Bridgewater State University where he earned a B.S. in Geology.

Danny was a life-long fisherman and owned and operated a fishing business called Cool Running Charters in Falmouth. He is survived by his mother, Audrey J. Tobin of Canton, NY; two sisters, Holly Junker Green and Marie Junker Cotellessa, both of Canton and a niece Azela Green also of Canton. A graveside service will be held in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Falmouth on Friday, April 26 at 11:00 AM. This will be followed by a time of fellowship. Leta C. Bolton, 98, Watertown, NY – Leta C. Bolton passed away in the care of Hospice on Saturday, March 30, 2019 with her family by her side.

Leta was born October 18, 1920 in Watertown, NY, the daughter of Roy and Florence House Washburn. She graduated from Evans Mills High School in 1937 and Potsdam Normal School in 1941.Leta taught in the Calcium Elementary School from 1941 to 1944.

Leta married Stephen C. Bolton in Watertown on September 24, 1944 in Hope Presbyterian Church. Upon her marriage she devoted her time to her children, Bolton’s Pharmacy and the care of her mother. She was active in the Girl Scouts and Hope Presbyterian Church where she served in the Sunday School, Junior Church, Day School, the choir and worked as a Deacon.

Leta was predeceased by her husband Stephen, brother Harold A.Washburn, and son-in-law Gary Ross.

She is survived by four children, Cheryl L. Ross of Black River, Ardis M. Seifried (William), Stephen B. Bolton (Yvonne Reff) and Nola C. Bolton, of Watertown.

Also seven grandchildren, Brenda Levine (Jason), Barbara Rogers (Peter), Kelly Naumiec (Richard), Katie Ross (Joe Craig), Jennifer DeForest (Craig), Zach Bolton (Nicole), Adam Bolton (Awo Sena).

A memorial service at Hope Presbyterian Church at 11 am on May 11th. A committal service will follow in Brookside Cemetery.

MASSENA - Charles H. Mossow, 84, of 186 Horton Road, passed away early Monday morning, April 1, 2019 at Massena Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.

Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena on Wednesday 3-7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Massena. Burial will be held later in the spring in Calvary Cemetery.
