Donald L. Colvin, Jr.

Donald L. Colvin, Jr., age 67, life resident of Richland, before moving to London, Ohio in 2012, passed away Thursday at home in London, Ohio. Donnie was born July 21, 1951 in Watertown, the son of Donald L. and Mabel Johnson Colvin, Sr. He graduated from Pulaski High School in 1970. Donnie was employed by Conrail in East Syracuse for 20 years, retiring due to a work-related injury.

He enjoyed volunteering, and giving and doing for others. He was dedicated to the MCV summer lunch program, feeding all kids who showed up Monday through Friday, for eight weeks in the summer over the last five years. He was a beloved friend and neighbor; member of the Madison County Vineyard, member of the MCV Men’s Group, and he played chair volleyball three times a week. Donnie was an avid Yankee fan. He also enjoyed going to yard sales. Donnie was a former member of the Richland Fire Department.

Surviving are one son, Jason Colvin (companion Sammie Noakes) of Woodstock, GA, one daughter, Andrea Colvin (companion Nathan Saddler) of Watertown, two sisters, Donna Moyer of Oswego and Edie (Dick) Joyner of Sandy Creek, two brothers, Steve (Abby) Colvin of Sandy Pond and Mark (Rhonda) Colvin of London, OH, three grandchildren, Logan, Serena, and Alyssa, and many nieces and nephews. Donnie was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 1st at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski with burial in Riverside Cemetery in Pulaski. Calling hours will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Donald C. Wetherwax

Donald C. Wetherwax, 75, of 36281 S. Main St., Antwerp, passed away April 26, 2019 following a brief illness at the Samaritan Medical Center.

Born on October 13, 1943 in Watertown, NY, son of Clifford and Helen (Gowing) Wetherwax, he graduated from Indian River High School. Following school he entered the US Air Force and was honorably discharged after serving eight years.

Don worked for the Roofers Union out of Syracuse and for Farley Roofing in Gouverneur for several years.

He enjoyed fixing lawnmowers and doing various repairs around his home and for friends and family. He was an avid NASCAR and Bruce Springsteen fan, enjoyed watching Swamp Loggers and mud bogging on TV. He and his wife used to mud bog years ago and had belonged to Team Xtreme Off-road Club. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He married Linda L. Ashley on March 1, 1975. Linda retired from Fort Drum where she was a cook for many years. She passed away January 31, 2019.

Among his survivors are his three children, Earl K. Wetherwax and his companion Ava Riley, Black River, Todd P. and Jodi Wetherwax, Philadelphia, Bobbi Jo Wetherwax and David Prashaw, Antwerp; six grandchildren, Derek, Brianna, Jeffrey, Kailee, Blake, and Jackie; two great grandchildren, Katelynn and Tanner; two brothers and their wives, William and Carol Wetherwax, Livonia, NY, Robert and Merle Wetherwax, Rodman, several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and his beloved wife he is predeceased by a brother, Richard Wetherwax.

Calling hours will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1 at the Bruce Funeral Home, 131 Maple St., Black River. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial for both Don and Linda will be held at 1 p.m. on May 10 at the Evans Mills Cemetery.

Gertrude M. Solar, 93, of Clayton passed away Saturday, April 27, 2019, at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton on Wednesday, May 1, from 4 - 7 pm. The funeral service will be held at the Clayton United Methodist Church at 11 am on Thursday, May 2, with Rev. Earl Lalone, pastor, presiding followed by burial in Clayton Cemetery.

Gertrude was born in Alexandria Bay on June 7, 1925, daughter of Ulysses G. and Margaret Ellen Giffin Riches and she graduated from Alexandria Bay High School. On September 28, 1947 she married Charles G. Solar at Alexandria Bay Methodist Church.

She had worked at the Golden Anchor as a waitress and for the Clayton Bathing Suit Factory. She then was a Chart Winder at Graphic Controls, Clayton and retired in 1988 after 17 years at the company. Gertrude was a member of the Clayton United Methodist Church. She was a charter and founding member of the Clayton Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a member of the 1000 Islands Rebecca Lodge, where she was past Noble Grand and past District Deputy. Gert enjoyed working in her flower garden and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Along with her husband of 71 years, she is survived by her two sons, William C. Solar and his significant other, Krista Kittle, Clayton and Robert G. Solar, Sr. and wife, Sandy, Lovingston, VA; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her dear friends, Leona Smith, Gouverneur, Barbara Holdridge and her family, Michigan, and Bill Metzler, Auburn. Gertrude was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Cheryl Solar, three brothers, Harold, Hartford, and James Howard Riches, and her sister, Madeline Riches.

WADDINGTON — Roy F. Patraw, 84, passed away Saturday evening, April 27, 2019 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

Friends may call Monday (today) 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam, where funeral services are tentatively scheduled for Tuesday at 10:00 AM. Burial will be held later in the spring in St. Ann’s Cemetery, St. Regis Falls.

ROY F. PATRAW

WADDINGTON- Roy F. Patraw, 84, of 10 LaGrasse Street, peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at the Canton Potsdam Hospital.

Roy was born on January 25, 1935 in St. Regis Falls, son of the late Wendell and Harriett Peck Patraw. He attended schools in St. Regis Falls and also studied at Canton ATC. He married Elaine M. Dow on June 29, 1957 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Norwood.

Roy began working at Clarkson University in 1954, retiring as Supervisor of the Heating Plant in 1995, due to health issues. He also worked at St. Lawrence NYSAR for seven years, and for a short time at the Waddington Hepburn Library. He enjoyed energy, studying it and figuring it out. Roy was also very artistic, and enjoyed painting, but he really enjoyed talking and visiting with others.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; and one son, Craig A. Patraw of Hermon; his brother Eugene Patraw of York, PA; two sister-in-law’s, Dorothy and Gerald Gonyou, and Muriel Testani; a brother-in-law, Gerald and Madeline Dow; and several nieces and nephews.

Roy was predeceased by two sons in infancy, Michael Joseph Patraw and Bruce John Patraw; four siblings and their spouses, Elois and Lawrence Sanford, William Patraw, Edna and Harry Price, and Helen and Gerald Palmer, along with several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam, Monday 2-4 and 7-9 PM, where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10:00 AM, with Rev. Douglas Lucia officiating. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family at St. Anne’s Cemetery in St. Regis Fallls.

Donations may be made in Roy’s memory to the Waddington Resource Center or the Waddington Rescue Squad.

Madelyn Virginia “Ginny” Brooks Stowell

Gouverneur - Madelyn Virginia “Ginny” Brooks Stowell, 94, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2019 at Riverledge Nursing Home in Ogdensburg.

Ginny was born in Morristown on June 12, 1924, the daughter of John and Edith (Lowery) Brooks of Brier Hill.

She married her husband Herbert Stowell on April 20, 1946 in Gouverneur with Rev. Crawford officiating and Herb’s brother Charles Stowell standing up with them along with Ginny’s best friend Alma Markwick Rumble. They were married for 71 years, living in Gouverneur from 1946 until 2017 when they moved together to Riverledge Nursing Home. Herb passed away on September 12, 2017.

Ginny graduated from a one room schoolhouse in Brier Hill in 1941 and from St. Lawrence State Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. During her nursing school internship, she worked one year at Belview Hospital of Nursing in NYC and Vanderbilt School of Nursing in Nashville, TN, specializing in psychology. In her third year of nursing, she joined the army nursing corps, as they needed nurses for WW II but she had to graduate first. The war ended before she graduated, and she did not have to go to Europe.

Ginny became charge nurse of the medical floor at Van Duzee Hospital in Gouverneur and when E.J. Noble Hospital opened up in1951, she was named the floor charge nurse there. In 1952, when the first epidemic of polio struck, Ginny was the only nurse who knew how to operate the Iron Lung. She had positions as charge nurse for the OB floor and surgical floor. Ginny worked private duty nursing, and had worked at the private practices of Dr. Ernest Adler for 26 years and Dr. Abdul Jalalzai. She served as East Side School nurse before retiring at age 65.

Ginny was to meet Herb, when he was discharged home from WW II, at a lunch with his mother, Marion Stowell, who was a cook at the Van Duzee Hospital, but Herb skipped out. However, the next night, Ginny and her friend Alma, saw him at the Park View Hotel in Gouverneur and she introduced herself. Herb always said, “he never stood a chance”, and they married 2 weeks later.

The couple have 2 children, Bonnie Simmons, Thomas and Sandy Stowell, all of Gouverneur, 4 grandchildren Jason Simmons, Kris, Adam, and Tyler Stowell, 9 great grandchildren,1 great, great grandchild, nieces and nephews. Ginny is predeceased by her husband Herb, her parents, and her brothers John R. and Robert Brooks.

Lifetime members of the Gouverneur First Baptist Church and Gouverneur First Presbyterian Church, they spent their lifetimes in service to their church and the church family. They spent many years “doing all things as a family” or they didn’t do it at all. They enjoyed years of racing cars, boats, and go-karts, traveling on motorcycles, owned camps at Pleasant Lake and Hickory Lake, and enjoyed it all with their friends and families in work and play while being of help to anyone who needed it.

There will be no funeral services per their wishes and private burial will be in Hailesboro Cemetery with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Memorial donations in their memory may be made to the Gouverneur Vol. Fire Department, Gouverneur Vol. Rescue Squad, or Gouverneur First Presbyterian Church.

Lowell W. Groulx

Graveside services for Lowell W. Groulx, age 74 from Ogdensburg will be held at 10:00am on Saturday (May 11, 2019) at Notre Dame Cemetery with Rev. Justin Thomas officiating. There will be a celebration of his life to follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Lowell passed away on Thursday (April 25, 2019) at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center.

Surviving is his sister Joyce Chevrier; a brother Carl “Fred” Groulx; special friends Lee Jones and Gary Baker all of Ogdensburg; along with several nieces and nephews.

His parents John & Mildred (Klock) Groulx; two brothers Amos & Charles “Leo” Groulx; a sister Elizabeth Panfil; a nephew Ronald “Tuffy” Chevrier and a niece Tami Beaulieu predeceased him.

As a young man he worked at McAdam Cheese Plant for 10 years and also Eddy’s Supermarket for Bob & Frank O’Donoghue.

Lowell was proud to share the monument dedicated to the late Charles Groulx located in Groulx Park in Ogdensburg, who died during WWI while stationed in France in 1918.

Lowell’s mother was a founding member of the St. Lawrence NYSARC where he served over 40 years. He was often recognized as employee of the month, and prior to his retirement at age 71, he was formally recognized as employee of the year in 2015 for outstanding performance, productivity and dedicated service.

Lowell could often be seen at the Ogdensburg Fire Department, where the local firemen treated him with respect and made him feel like a valued member of the community, for more than 60 years.

Lee Jones was also one of his often talked about friends that made sure he got to the antique shows. His prized possessions are the numerous trophies he has earned while displaying the 1954 Schwinn over the past 65 years at various events. He frequently self-proclaimed he was the “Schwinn Man” and proudly announced he still had the first Schwinn purchased by his parents when he was 9 years old to anyone who would listen. Lowell was a good friend to all that knew him, and will be missed by the Ogdensburg community.

Yvette Fafard Rose, 84, of Watertown passed away Sunday morning, April 28, 2019 under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.

Yvette was born in Sainte-Elisabeth de Warwick, Quebec, Canada on March 27, 1935. She was the middle child of ten born to Napoleon and Lucienne Fafard.

She is survived by her two daughters, Nathalie J. Rose and Nicole M. Rose.

In keeping with her final requests, there will be no services. Arrangements are entrusted with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown.

Veronica H. Chambers, 85, passed away Monday afternoon, April 29, 2019, at Lewis County Residential Facility where she had resided since July 2017.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Watertown on Friday, May 3, from 4 - 7 PM. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 4, at 3 PM at West Lowville Cemetery with Bruce Chartland presiding.

Veronica was born in Copenhagen on March 21, 1934, daughter of Frederic and Lena Franklin Chadil and she attended local schools. On December 18, 1951 she married John C. Chambers in the parsonage of Lowville Methodist Church with Rev. Anderson officiating. He passed on September 13, 2009. She enjoyed being a homemaker, crocheting, and embroidery and was known as the “coupon queen”.

She is survived by her son, Gary R. Chambers, Copenhagen; two daughters, Rhonda J. Chambers, Copenhagen and Cindy L. (Johnny) Santiago, Central Square; two daughters-in-law, Susan K. Chambers, Theresa and Lorrie A. Chambers, Carthage; 9 grandchildren, Nichole (Mark) Hoffman, Dale (Kande) Papin, Jr., John Chambers, Krystin (Adam Powell) Chambers, David (Angie) Jones, Ed (Beth) Jones, Clayton (Donna) Chambers, Matt (Santana Knaul) Santiago, and Travis Santiago; 22 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren; sister, Myrtle Kelly and husband, Bob, Short Track, NY; 2 sisters-in-law and 1 brother-in-law, Elizabeth Bennet, Doris (Art) Haggerty, and Duane Waterman; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Along with her husband, John, Veronica was predeceased by two sons, David J. Chambers, October 9, 2009 and Bruce L. Chambers, June 12, 2010, granddaughter, Heather Chambers, June 1973, four brothers and five sisters.

Janet Marie (Robbins) Wagar

Janet Marie (Robbins) Wagar, 75, from Tuscarora, N.Y. passed away 12/27/18 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Janet was born 6/8/43 in Adams, N.Y., daughter of Lawrence and Leona (Fleming) Robbins. She graduated from General Brown School in 1962.

Janet married Donald Wagar from Dexter on 12/29/62. They moved to the Rochester area and finally settled in Tuscarora where they lived for 43 years.

Surviving her besides her husband Donald are two sons; Kevin from Tuscarora and Jeff (Tammy) from Lost Creek, West Virginia. There are seven grandchildren, Klay (Amber Foehner), Kelsey (Jessie) Goodman, Kole, Justin, Joshua (Kelley Patterson), Melissa (Nate) Dimas and Nicole Souter. She has four great grandchildren: Wesley, Waylan, Layne and Riley.

Janet is also survived by her twin brother James Robbins from Dexter; brothers Terry from Depauville and Gerry from Dexter. Sisters Marilyn (Dennis) Regan from Avon, N.Y., Marlene Dunaway and Maureen Brimmer from Dexter and Rosemary Robbins (George Marshall) from Watertown. A brother Merle predeceased her in 1967 as well as her parents in 1996 and 2012.

Janet was a temporary post mistress in Tuscarora, operated a general store with a diner and performed home care duties for numerous people in the area.

She enjoyed bingo, gardening, canning, quilting and many craft projects. She also enjoyed Syracuse University Basketball and NASCAR racing.

Although her final years were difficult with medical issues, it was her humor, wit, and compassion that will be remembered. Those who loved and knew her miss her very much.

A family and friend gathering will be held at the Dexter Legion on May 4th from 1:00PM – 4:00PM.
