pPotsdam: Eileen Rose Tully McAvoy, 91, of Mayfield Drive, Potsdam passed away on Friday Sept. 2, 2016 at the River Hospital in Alexandria Bay, NY surrounded by her loving family. Friends and family may call the Phillips Memorial Home in Madrid from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. on Friday Sept. 9, 2016. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Held 10:00 A.M. at St. John the Baptist Church, Madrid with Msgr. C. John McAvoy officiating, Msgr. Harry Snow co-officiating with Deacon Dan McGrath. Burial to follow in the Parish Cemetery immediately following the services./ppEileen was born on March 26, 1925 in Newark, NJ the daughter of the late Thomas and Helena (Falter) Tully. She attended Martland Hospital School of Nursing in Newark, NJ. At the start of her career as a Registered Nurse, she worked Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York, NY./ppEileen and Neil J. McAvoy were married on October 16, 1948 in Caldwell, NJ. Eileen lived in Madrid until 2011, when she moved to the Mayfield Apartments in Potsdam./ppA mother of six children, she returned to work some years later as the office nurse for Dr. Samuel Livingston in Madrid. She also worked as a floor nurse one day a week at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, until her retirement in 1996./ppEileen is predeceased by her husband, Neil J. McAvoy, a daughter, Mary Ellen James, and a brother Thomas L. Tully./ppEileen is survived by of her children and their spouses, Thomas (Jeanine) McAvoy, of Black River, NY, Jill (David) Gottlieb of Harrisburg, PA, Lee Ann (Paul) of Rochester, NY, Debra (Brian) Grayson of Marion, NY and Michelle (Carl) Giovognoli of Archbald, PA. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren; Megan, Melissa, Christina, Kathleen, Julia, Rachel, Emma, Courtney, Neil, Emily, and Lily, eight great-grandchildren; Chase, Ashley, Jacob, Trevor, Taylor, Trenton, Evelyn, and Ellie along with her beloved brother in-law, Msgr. C. John McAvoy and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. /ppEileen’s most cherished times were those spent with her family. Eileen was a lifetime and very active member of St. John the Baptist Church, in Madrid. She served as a member of the Altar Rosary Society and was an associate member of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart. She also had a lifelong commitment to the Girl Scouts of America and to her community. /ppShe found great spiritual enrichment attending the Annual Catholic Charismatic Conference held in the Diocese of Scranton, PA for many years with her daughter Michelle and husband Carl./ppThe McAvoy family sincerely thanks the nurses and doctors at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital & River Hospital in Alexandria Bay for their compassionate care.
