Alfred “Al” L. Sovie

pA Memorial Mass for Alfred “Al” L. Sovie, age 85 of Wadhams St in Ogdensburg, will be held on Thursday (November 10, 2016) at 10:00am at Notre Dame Church with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Al passed away at his home on Sunday (Nov 6th) surrounded by his very special friends./ppSurviving is his brother-in-law William (Carol) Doe of Adams NY; a niece Renee Backus and a nephew Danny Bruyere; dear friends Debbie Polniak, Mary Polniak and Peggy Levato./ppHe was predeceased by his precious wife Margaret in 2002; a son Scot in 1982; and a sister Rita Bruyere & her husband Robert./ppAl was born on August 6, 1931 in Ogdensburg NY, a son of the late Alfred F. & Grace (Williams) Sovie. He graduated from the George Hall Trade School in Ogdensburg and continued his education at Syracuse University and SUNY Canton earning a Civil Engineering Degree. He later married Margaret Doe on May 8, 1954 at Notre Dame Church in Ogdensburg./ppDuring his career he co-owned and operated Hasenauer & Sovie Engineering Firm in Rochester for many years. Al authored many heartfelt poems which he shared with his wife Margaret and his friends. He was an accomplished pianist and with other various musical instruments. /ppIn loving memory of his wife Margaret, Al created the Margaret D. Sovie Endowed Scholarship at SUNY Canton in 2010. This scholarship provides full tuition of one student in the second year of their RN program. Additionally, the Margaret D. Sovie scholarship provides half tuition to a graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy that is enrolled in either Nursing or Health Care Management at SUNY Canton. As a result of Al’s continued generosity, SUNY Canton will further honor Margaret with the naming of the Margaret D. Sovie Nursing Program in December of this year. These legacies will permanently memorialize the care, compassion and commitment to nursing education that Al and Margaret shared throughout their lives. /ppAl was also a generous supporter of the University of Rochester Medical Center and Nursing Practice at Strong Memorial Hospital. He endowed the Margaret D. Sovie Center for Advanced Practice in 2006. He established the Center in honor of his wife, Margaret Sovie, who was a pioneer in developing the Nurse Practitioner role in acute care hospitals. The Sovie Center was one of the first of its kind in the country and is recognized nationally for promoting excellence through its educational and practice programs. Al’s selfless generosity and commitment created a legacy of high quality care for patients and families for years to come. /ppMemorial contributions can be made to Notre Dame Heritage Fund or SUNY Canton c/o The Margaret D.
