HAMMOND—MORRISTOWN-Daniel L. Bickelhaupt, 74, 2619 County Route 6, died Monday evening at Riverledge Nursing Home in Ogdensburg, where he had been a patient for 6 days.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Jeff LaJoy, Morristown, a son and daughter-in-law, Leonard D. and Robyn, Hammond; three grandchildren, Cody and Adam Bickelhaupt, Hammond and Sydney LaJoy, Morristown and a brother and sister-in-law, Don and Sue Bickelhaupt, Tully.
Born in Ogdensburg on June 2, 1942 the son of Herschel Henry and Valera Loraine McDougall Bickelhaupt. Dan graduated from Hammond Central School in 1960.
On January 26, 1964 he married Carolyn Warren and the couple had two children. They worked together in the family business. The marriage ended in divorce.
From 1960 until 1975, Dan worked at Lewis and Lewis in Hammond, a fuel and petroleum business. In 1975 he and Carolyn ran Bickelhaupt Fuel until 1993. Then in 1993 he worked in fuel delivery at MX Fuels based in Massena until his retirement in 2009. During this period he also worked part time at the Ogdensburg Bridge & Port Authority and was a member of the Longshoreman Union.
Always active in community service, Dan was a member of the Hammond Fire and Rescue from 1961 until the time of his death. He served as Chief from 1982-1985 and again from 1996-1998. He was a Commissioner for the Brier Hill Fire Department.
Mr. Bickelhaupt was a 50 year member and past Master of Black Lake Hammond Masonic Lodge #319, Free and Accepted Masons and had served as Patron and District Grand Lecturer of the Order of The Eastern Star, The Valley of the 1000 Islands Chapter 382, in Morristown.
A collector of Antiques, Dan often attended auctions and sales. He had been an active bowler and in fact used to be a pin setter. Mr. Bickelhaupt loved and enjoyed his family and friends and spending time near the river.
Calling hours will be Thursday afternoon and evening from 4-7 at the Brier Hill Fire Station Community-Meeting Room, SH 37, Brier Hill. There will be a Masonic Service at 6:30 and a Fire Department service at 7:00.
The Funeral will be held at 12:00 noon at the Brier Hill Fire Station, with Rev. Thomas Nichols, Pastor of Galilee Church and Kendrew Corners Church.
