LOWVILLE — Lorene Olson Davey, born to the late Conradine Rose Mackenzie and Fredrick W. Olson on March 18, 1954 in Jacksonville, Florida, passed peacefully to rest May 17, 2017 in her home.
After graduating from Mayville Central School in 1972, Lorene earned an Associates in Applied Science in Nursing from Jamestown Community College. Since receiving her degree, Lorene’s passion for helping people and love for her work as a nurse stayed with her throughout her life and only grew stronger as time went on. Lorene relocated to Pensacola, Florida to continue working as a nurse, and this was where she met her husband, Derek MacLean Davey. They were wed March 31, 1979 on Naval Air Station Pensacola. Here, her late son, Seamus MacLean Davey was born. Derek’s military duty led them to Washington, North Carolina, and finally back to New York, where they raised their four children and where she continued working as an RN until her retirement in April of 2017, after graduating Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Utica with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, 2011. Lorene was constantly striving to perfect her craft in her field as she attended many seminars, courses, and even a trip to Brazil during her time at SUNY Utica.
Lorene lived for her children and eventually her five grandchildren. Nothing brought her more joy than traveling to see them around the world, whenever possible. She became a Gold Star Mother in 2005. She was born to be a grandmother and looked forward to her retirement, where she could be a Mimi full-time.
Lorene’s devotion to helping others, to aiding and supporting children, to arduously living and maintaining an active lifestyle was all on display throughout her life with her involvement in lifeguarding, boy scouts and girl scouts, teaching Sunday School and confirmation classes, Habitat for Humanity, and coaching numerous Odyssey of the Mind teams. Lorene enjoyed running and swimming, leading her to complete many triathlons into her 50s. She was an active advocate of Organ Donation and spread awareness throughout all of northern and central NYS.
Lorene is survived by her husband Derek M. Davey of Lowville, their children Shiloh (Ryan) Mackey, Brittany (Andreas) Bedernik, and Austin (Jamie) Byrd, their grandchildren, Piper and Evelyn Mackey, Cullen and Alexander Bedernik, and Maddox Byrd, Step-mother Terry Olson, Mother-in-law Marget Davey, numerous siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews, and an amazing extended family. Lorene had a love and energy in life that touched everyone who was around her.
