pBarbara P. Newton, who was admired and respected and loved by all who knew her, passed gently into spirit as Heaven’s door opened on April 9, 2016 in Zephyrhills, Florida with her loving son Frank by her side. /ppBarb was born on March 14, 1933 to Leigh and Alta Nichols Pickup of Gowanda, NY and was a loving sister to her brother Allen Pickup of Woodland, Colorado. Barb graduated from Cattaraugus Central School and then from Buffalo State Teachers College. /ppShe met and married Don Newton and they happily lived in Maple View for the rest of their married lives. Together they had a son Frank L. Newton. Together they were an avid motorcycle family—joining the Upstate Cruisers Motorcycle Club when Frank was just a teenager! Family was first and foremost with Barb and Don. They loved the outdoors. Frank still loves the outdoors and loves to fish—year round!/ppBarb joined the ranks of the Sandy Creek Central School Faculty as a Home Economics Teacher and taught three generations before her retirement. She was lovingly dedicated the Spade yearbook in 1985 and was just recently honored at the Alumni Banquet. As word of her passing reached so many, the sentiment was always the same—she had such a profound influence on our lives, from students, to parents, to faculty and staff and she helped ‘sew the fabric of our community’ together all those years. She was a good teacher, practical, caring, friendly, and helpful, a loyal friend, and a willing mentor to all. /ppAfter her retirement from SCCS, she happily wintered in her Florida community in Zephyrhills for over 24 years and developed strong friendships there as well. She was the Bingo President for over 20 years, she so loved it that she bought a home on Bingo Blvd.! She was active in the United Methodist Church and Victoria Chapter #205 of the Eastern Star and was a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Association. /ppIn lieu of flowers, Frank has requested that a scholarship be formed in his mother’s memory at Sandy Creek Central School, Dollars for Scholars, PO Box 248, Sandy Creek, NY 13145. In the memo line please write Barb Newton Scholarship. That will ensure that each year a deserving student will be chosen to honor and continue her legacy. /pp‘Barbie’ I know your beloved husband, your family and friends are overjoyed seeing you again! We will cherish your beautiful memory here on earth and speak of you with love in our hearts as we support a local church dinner or an organization breakfast. Raise a cup of coffee in her honor! Remember, Heaven has your own special and custom fitted wings waiting for you—no sewing required! God Speed, dear friend, until we all meet again! /p
