Brown, 92, passed away November 28, 2016, at the Samaritan Keep Home where she has been a resident./ppMary was born Mary Jane Smith, at home on Summer St. in Watertown. /ppHer first job was when she was 15, at Mannie’s Ice Cream, which paid 12 1/2 cents per hour./ppShe graduated from Watertown High School. Mary met her husband Robert E. Brown at Gene’s Inn in Brownville while he was stationed at Pine Camp. They married six weeks later and he went off to fight in WWII in 1944./ppWhile Robert was gone Mary worked as a telephone operator at the NY Telephone company. After the war the family moved from base to base, following Robert in his Army career. Mary and her two daughters returned to Watertown when Robert was posted in Korea for the war. When Robert retired from the Army, they settled with their now four daughters on Long Island for two years, but Watertown was always Mary’s home town and they moved back. /ppFor many years Mary bowled on a team with her sister Elizabeth Worden. She worked at the NY Air Brake in the shipping department and retired from there. Her favorite hobbies were rummage sales, attending church bazaars and doing cross stitch./ppShe is survived by her husband of 72 years, Robert E. Brown, four daughters, Karen E. Carpenter (Patrick), Jill E. Butler (Steven), Joy L. Swensen (Stephen), Jan L. pJohn Edward Kent, age 86, of Virgil, NY died suddenly on the way to a family Thanksgiving celebration. He was a resident of Virgil for 14 years and prior to that lived in Beaver Falls, NY for 31 years. He was born Dec. 24, 1929 in Upland, PA. He was the son of the late Bernard Cleveland Kent and the late Mary Edith Johnson Kent. He attended local schools graduating from West Chester High School in 1946. Upon graduating from the University of Delaware in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in animal husbandry, he served in the US Army and was discharged in 1955. He worked at various agricultural jobs including Eastern States Farmers Exchange, Agway, and Caldwell Supply Co. He retired from Caldwell in 1994. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth May Foster Kent. He is also survived by three sons; Richard (Laura) of Athens, GA, Robert (Aimee) of Woodbury, CT, and James (Lynne) of West Chester, PA. He is also survived by 2 daughters; Susan (Arthur) Martignetti of Liverpool, NY and Barbara (Christopher) Perfetto of Clinton, MA. He is survived by 9 grandchildren, multiple step-grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, and 1 step great-granddaughter. He was pre-deceased by 3 brothers; Harry, Bernard, and Robert./ppHe was an active member of the United Methodist Church. He was finance chairman of the Beaver Falls United Methodist Church following his retirement. He performed lay preaching during his retirement. A memorial service will be held at the Homer United Methodist Church in Homer, NY on Saturday December 3rd at 2:00pm. pGLENFIELD - Marjorie M. “Marj” Bookhagen, 91, peacefully and finally joined her beloved Roy on late Sunday afternoon, November 27, 2016 with her daughter by her side, at the Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Boonville, where she had been a resident since June of 2013./ppMrs. Bookhagen was born August 25, 1925 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada the daughter of the late John and Martha (Parker) McIntyre and moved to Buffalo when she was 14 months old. /ppShe married Roy C. Bookhagen on August 2, 1967 at St. John’s Church in Buffalo. While in Buffalo she worked for Buffalo State Psychiatric Center for 27 years. Marj and her family moved to Glenfield area after a long friendship with the Burnham clan of Brantingham, arriving April 1st, 1973. She retired from South Lewis Central School. Marj was formerly of Church Road on the Otter Creek. Roy passed away on March 26, 2010./ppShe is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Amy S. and Craig Dailey of Constableville; two grandchildren, Lucas and Jenna Dailey. Michael R. Hudson, Ph.D.
pMichael R. Hudson, Ph.D., 62, of Ashland, passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2016 in University Hospitals, Samaritan Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born January 14, 1954 in Watertown, NY to Ross C. and Agnes (nee Bilow) Hudson./ppHe grew up in Gouverneur, New York where he graduated from high school before attending St. Lawrence University. While there, he discovered his life’s passion, the study of of geology and chemistry and went on to earn a B.S. in Geology. He continued study at Indiana University receiving a M.A. in Geology and at Miami University (Ohio) completing a Ph.D.in Geology. /ppDr. Hudson , associate professor of geology, began teaching at Ashland University in 1982 where he taught earth science courses including mineralogy, geochemistry, metamorphic petrology, and natural disasters. Beloved by his students, Dr. Hudson, or “Doc”, served as the advisor to the Geology Club and director of the annual Mohican District Science Fair, and was the recipient of three Mentor Awards, a program that recognizes faculty or staff whose academic leadership with regard to students extends beyond the classroom. He was active with his students in geochemical research on rocks from both northern New York and north central Ohio. He also served several terms as Faculty Senate president, and was very active on various campus committees. He was a member of the Geological Society of America. /ppHe proudly served in the United States Army where earned the rank of captain. /ppOn August 14, 1988 he married the former Teresa “Terri” Cooper in Ashland. /ppMichael was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, elder and most currently on the board of trustees. Michael loved to sing and participated for many years in the church choir./ppOne of Michael’s greatest pleasures included spending time each summer at the family summer cottage or “camp” in the Thousand Islands in Northern NY where he loved water activities and boating on the St. Lawrence River with his children and grandchildren. An avid craftsman, he enjoyed projects big and small, whether is was re-shingling the cottage, repairing dock boards, laying new flooring in the bedrooms or fixing the screen door on the back porch. He considered it “heaven on earth” and it was one of the few places Michael really allowed himself to relax and slow down from his frenzied lifestyle./ppMichael will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of 28 years, Mrs. Teresa “Terri” Hudson of Ashland; two children, James (Ashley) Hudson of New London and Pamela (Andy) Hudson Keener of Orrville; four grandchildren, Samantha and Emma Hudson and Madelyn and Aiden Keener; his loving mother, Mrs. Anges Hudson of Gouverneur, NY; a brother, Scott (Sandy) Hudson of Gouverneur, NY; nieces and nephews Matthew Hudson, Elizabeth Hudson, Courtney (Jason) Fitzsimmons, and Tom (Marta) Frisinger; sister-in-laws, Kimmie (Steve) Humrichouser and Penny (Mark) Osgood, niece Megan (Nick) Osgood Winiarski and grand nephew Jack Cooper Winiarski. /ppMichael is preceded in death by his father, Ross C. Smith and then they had a daughter, Darby Lynn./ppGil was a mink rancher for 25 years and during which time he traveled to Russia and many European countries promoting mink ranching. /ppGil was an antique dealer for 40 years, during which time he met his loving companion, Robin Kellar, with whom he spent the last 21 years enjoying life./ppBesides loving the antique business and Syracuse Basketball, he was an avid trapper, known by some, as a legend./ppSurvivors include his companion, Robin Kellar; a son, Kimbal S. Tamara Sue Hunt
pTamara Sue Hunt passed away on November 28, 2017 surrounded by members of her loving family. She was born on March 21, 1950 in Watertown, NY, the daughter of late Lyle and the late Marvel Johnston. Tammy graduated from Watertown High School in June 1968. Upon graduation, she worked for a couple years at Bomax. On November 20, 1971 she married Harlow “Abe” Hunt. /ppShe was a school bus driver for the South Jefferson Central District for many years and later for the Liverpool Central District retiring in 2004. Tammy and Abe moved numerous times, mostly as a result of his career moves. The couple’s final move was to The Villages, Florida. She loved the area and enjoyed dancing to the nightly entertainment on the three squares. She also enjoyed playing Trivia a couple nights with new friends they had met since moving there./ppMany of her friends affectionately called her “Martha”, a testament to her remarkable decorating tastes. Annually she hosted her Christmas party where she toiled for several weeks decorating her house and creating dozens of cookies and exquisite desserts to share with friends and family. She was a remarkably talented woman with unparalleled taste in interior/exterior decorating and an ability to create wonderfully tasty culinary treats./ppShe was a devoted mother and a wonderful wife. She is sorely missed by her husband, daughter Jessica (Dan) McAllister and son Harlow “Rich,” and by two beautiful granddaughters Kelly and Claire McAllister. Potocki, 94, formerly of State Route 12, Lowville, died peacefully on November 28, 2016 at Sunset Nursing Home in Boonville where she had resided for the past three years./ppMarian was born on February 18, 1922 in Martinsburg, NY, a daughter of the late Clifford and Mildred Millard. She was a proud graduate of Lowville Academy in 1941. On November 14, 1964, she married the love of her life, Leo Potocki. During their retirement, they especially enjoyed traveling and taking bus trips with friends. Mr. Potocki died on November 12, 1999./ppMarian was employed as a bookkeeper for Lowville Farmers Cooperative for 41 ½ years. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, shopping and spending time with her loving family. He graduated from Franklin Academy in Malone in 1954. Darrell joined the U.S. National Guard from 1954 to 1963. He married Kathleen (Cook) Stromnes in 1962 at Notre Dame Church in Malone, NY. That marriage ended in divorce but they remained good friends. Darrell first went to work for Benware Creamery in 1954, Alcoa in 1955, as a laborer for the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1957 and later went to work for Acme Markets as a produce manager in 1958. Later, Darrell went to work for Peoples Oil (Griffith Oil) in 1979 leaving in 1993 to work for Laidlaw (First Student) where he retired in 2013./ppDarrell was a Catholic Communicant of Notre Dame Church in Malone and Ogdensburg and also of St. Mary’s Church in Canton./ppDarrell enjoyed classic cars, was an avid sports fan – especially the LA Dodgers, and also liked playing poker with his friends. George W. Persson
pHumanity lost an extraordinary community member on Saturday, November 26th 2016. George W. Persson, 78, shared his many talents with anyone who was fortunate enough to have known him. A true Renaissance Man, George will be remembered as an inventor, visionary, story teller, entrepreneur, history buff, problem solver, superb craftsman, globe traveler, curious student, teacher, community historian and friend to all. George was born in Syracuse, NY. He earned degrees from both Syracuse University, and SUNY Oswego. He taught Industrial Arts at Clifton-Fine Central School for 27 years. He also taught evening adult education courses at BOCES. During his tenure, George challenged and inspired students of all ages./pp In his retirement, he enjoyed being a caretaker of Benson Mines, Inc. He loved giving tours of the Benson facility to any willing party. He was instrumental in rejuvenating the railroad and reviving job opportunities in the area. He was always available at his shop (the Tabernacle) for anyone who needed inspiration, help on a project or a new lesson of life./ppHe was a 50 year member/officer of Clifton Fine Lions Club, enjoyed serving many years with the Masons, and a founding member/president of the Adirondack Exhibit Center (SOS). George also was a member of the Clifton Fine Golf Course for 20 years, and served on the Town of Fine Board of Assessment Review for approximately 40 years./ppThe Clifton Fine Hospital was started and maintained by his father (Dr. Robert Persson), and George has always been actively involved in the sustainability of the facility./ppGeorge is Survived by his wife Anita Persson, children Robert Persson (Mary), Susan Persson Dumke (Scot), grand children Jordan Persson and Kristopher Dumke, his brother Dr. Alfred Persson (May), his sister Sally Chillington. Mamie (Michaelena) Ciotti
pOn November 26, 2016 Mamie (Michaelena) Ciotti joined her late husband, Frank P. Ciotti, in eternal rest. She is fondly remembered by friends and will be greatly missed and loved forever by her daughter, Wanda, her grandchildren, Deborah and Steven and their spouses, Kevin and Erika, her great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Alexander, Raith, Brenna and Kayden as well as four generations of nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by all seven of her siblings. /ppMamie is the daughter of the late Anna and Kazimierz Zelazowski and was born February 12, 1918 in Martinsburg, NY. She attended Lowville Academy and moved to Utica, NY after her marriage to Alexander Dauksza who passed away in 1943. During WWII she worked as a physical therapist aide at Rhoads Military Hospital in Utica. After the war she was employed as a seamstress in Utica./ppIn 1957 she married Frank Ciotti and moved to La Fayette, NY where she lived until 2006. She was a communicant at St. James Church and a member of the Thirteenth of the Month Rosary Circle. Throughout her life Mamie enjoyed taking care of her beautiful gardens, became an extraordinary seamstress/tailor and quietly performed good deeds for family and friends. Toward the end of her life she fulfilled a long- time dream of helping to support needy children through the St. Kateri Haiti Project. /ppA calling hour will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 10:00-11:00 am. at St. James Church in Syracuse, NY, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 am. pHAILESBORO – Kelzo “Kelly” Shrewsberry, age 86, of Hailesboro, passed away at home on November 29, 2016 under the care of his loving family and Hospice./ppCalling hours will be at French Funeral Home in Gouverneur on Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. His funeral service will be held on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hailesboro Cemetery./ppKelzo was born on June 7, 1930 in Weeksbury, KY to the late John W. and Myrtle S. (Sifers) Shrewsberry. He served in the US Navy from 1948 until 1953 and the US Army from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1957. /ppKelly married Betty J. Woodard on October 8, 1955 at the Gouverneur Methodist Church attended by Arthur and Lillian Woodard. He worked as an underground miner for St. Joe Mineral Corp. for many years. Never sitting idle, Kelzo always worked when the mine was on strike. He cut trees for many area people, worked for Antwerp Roofing, and was the tunnel supervisor for the Bath County Pump Storage project in Virginia./ppKelzo was an avid outdoorsman who liked “drinking beer and shooting deer”. He loved to cut wood, hunt, fish, camp, go boating and dancing. He was a former Boy Scout Leader, a lifetime member of the Gouverneur VFW where he held several offices and enjoyed marching in parades and being on the firing detail./ppHis survivors include his wife, Betty Shrewsberry; five children, Mary Shrewsberry, Beryl Martin and her husband, Rick Hardin, Blane and his wife, Laurie Shrewsberry, Steven Shrewsberry, Kimberly and her husband, Jamie Provost; a brother, Blane Shrewsberry; a sister-in-law, Jo Shrewsberry; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and has 2 more on the way./ppKelzo is predeceased by his parents; a son, John Shrewsberry; a brother, Shurl Shrewsberry; and a sister, Lucille Johnson./ppDonations in memory of Kelzo may be made to the Gouverneur Business Women’s Breast Cancer Fund, PO Box 64, Gouverneur NY 13642.
