Virginia J. Schofield

Virginia J. Schofield, 90, formerly of Watertown died March 25, 2017 at Sudley Manor House, an assisted living facility in Manassas, VA, where she was a resident for over eight years.

Mrs. Schofield was born June 26, 1926 in Watertown, a daughter of Joseph and Mary Williams Geglia. She graduated from Watertown High School in 1944 majoring in the commercial secretary program. Following graduation, she worked at the Agricultural Insurance Company for six years. Virginia married Milton R. Schofield on May 20, 1950 at Saint Anthony’s Church. From that point on, Virginia devoted her life to her favorite job - raising her children and caring for her family. Later in her life, Virginia returned to the work force, serving as a teacher’s aide at New Day Nursery and Wiley Intermediate School and a library aide and reading lab aide at Watertown High School. Her kind and nurturing spirit and her love of children was evident in the work she chose to do outside the home. Her husband, Milton Schofield died January 26, 2002.

Virginia was a communicant of Holy Family Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, American Legion Post 61 Auxiliary and worked at the Board of Elections as a poll worker for many years. She enjoyed baking, reading and word puzzles, but most of all –spending time with her children and grandchildren - the loves of her life.

Surviving are her five children: Karen Schofield, Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Mary Alice Schofield, Jacksonville Beach, FL, Robert (Ann) Schofield, Bloomington, MN, Nancy (Donald) Kutil, Gainsville, VA and Cheryl (Eugene) Brown, San Diego, CA, and seven grandchildren, Brandon, Scott, Ellie, Celeste, Maxwell, Langston and Bronte’. They will miss her unconditional love. Virginia was the youngest of 10 children. Four brothers: Frank, John, Michael and Vincent and five sisters: Carmel, Marion, Angeline, Grace and Nellie all pre-deceased her.

Calling hours will be Saturday from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home at 12:30 pm followed by a funeral mass at 1 pm at Holy Family Church with Reverend Steven Murray officiating. Entombment will be in Glenwood Mausoleum. Her children invite all family and friends to join them for a luncheon from 3:00-5:00 at the Carriage House Restaurant (The Savory). Mr. Raymond J. “RJ” Hassett age 17 of Potsdam, NY passed away tragically on March 28th , 2017 at his home. Funeral Services for RJ will be held on Saturday, April 1st at 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam with Rev. Stephen Rocker Celebrant. There will be a luncheon to follow at the Potsdam American Legion on Rt. 345. Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Home on Friday March 31st from 3-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions is his memory may be made to benefit the Potsdam High School Varsity Football program at Potsdam Central School @ 29 Leroy St. Potsdam, NY 13676 in care of Cheryl Ellis treasurer. RJ was born on September 3, 1999 in Potsdam, NY to Raymond D. and Renee LaBrake Hassett. RJ was in his senior year at Potsdam Central High School. He loved playing football, lacrosse and snowmobiling. Just this year RJ was named First Team All Northern in football. He was also a goalie for the Potsdam Varsity High School lacrosse team. RJ was a very fun loving kid with a very big heart. He always had a smile for you. He had a very special bond with his brother Keenan.

RJ is survived by his parents Raymond and Renee Hassett; his brother Keenan Hassett; his maternal grandmother Frieda LaBrake; paternal grandparents Carol and Joseph Hassett and several cousins, uncles and aunts. He is predeceased by his maternal grandfather Frederick LaBrake.

Virginia R. Adams

Virginia R. Adams, 96, of Pillar Point/Dexter, New York passed away Tuesday March 28, 2017 at Samaritan Summit Village in Watertown, NY where she had resided for two years.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 27th at the Dexter Presbyterian Church at 3:00 P.M.

Born on March 16, 1921 in Ilion, New York, daughter of Barnard and Ethel Allen, she graduated from Ilion High School and Cornell University College of Home Economics. Following graduation, she was a 4-H agent for 3 years. In May of 1947 she married Wilford Adams of Adamshore Farm on Pillar Point.

Besides keeping house and raising two children, she assisted Wilford with some of the farm work and taught Jr. High at Watertown Junior High for several years before retiring. After retirement, she and Wilford spent time in Florida during the winter.

She played tennis, golf, and loved swimming and diving. She enjoyed playing bridge and canasta in later years. She had a huge garden to tend on the farm for many years. She led a girls’ 4-H club and taught cooking, sewing and refinishing furniture. She also participated in judging 4-H projects at the Jefferson County Fair for many years. She was also active in the Dexter Presbyterian Church and served in many ways over the years. She especially enjoyed visiting the elderly from the church.

Virginia is survived by a sister Nancy Chamberlain of Lowville, N.Y., a daughter Mary Aberg and her husband Lenny of Bristol, R.I., a son, Jerry Adams and wife Debbie of Pillar Point/Dexter,NY, grandchildren Doug Adams of Pacifica, California, Steve Adams of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, Christy Aberg of Dunbarten, New Hampshire, Erika Aberg of Krabi, Thailand and five great grandchildren.

As is so fitting of Virginia’s belief in giving and in education, she donated her body to the Syracuse University Medical School. Donations may be made in her name to heifer.org and online condolences may be made to dexterfuneralhome.com. Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter is in charge of arrangements.

Albany - Patricia M. McDermott Wilkie passed peacefully away at her home on March 30th 2017. She was born in Albany to Francis and Pearl (Hampton) McDermott on September 5, 1934 and lived in Rensselear growing up.

She was predeceased by her husband Lyle H. Wilkie Sr. They spent many years in Selkirk, NY raising seven children. Survivors include Laurel (George) LaMora, Jacqueline Wilkie, Lyle (Linda) Wilkie Jr., Cathy Wilkie, Patrick Wilkie, Thomas Mizener, Holly Wilkie. Predeceased by her son and daughter James Wilkie, Maribeth Mizener and daughter-in-law Laura Wilkie. She is also survived by her 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren who were her pride and joy.

She worked as a budget analyst for over 30 years with the Department of Transportation and the Department of Health. She was involved in many projects with her family, traveling, sports, scouts and drama. She rarely missed a chance to see them play or perform.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Mater Christi Church on April 4th, 2017 at 10:00 am, 40 Hopewell St., Albany, NY 12208. Burial to follow the Mass. Family and friends may call at the funeral home, Monday, April 3rd. from 4-7:00 pm.

Edwards – Phyllis Foeppel, 78, passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at her home.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, April 2nd from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur. A burial in South Edwards Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Phyllis was born in Gouverneur on September 17, 1938, one of fourteen children of Joseph and Hattie House Dashnaw.

She graduated from Gouverneur High School and spent most of her life in Gouverneur and Edwards.

Phyllis married Wayne C. Foeppel on October 15, 1977. Mr. Foeppel passed away on March 24, 2000. Phyllis was previously married to Richard M. Thayer.

Phyllis worked with her husband Wayne at their butcher shop, Foeppel’s Meatland, in Gouverneur. She had also worked as a waitress and provided house cleaning services.

She enjoyed singing karaoke, dancing, listening to country music especially Dolly Parton and old country/western tunes. Phyllis also collected dolls and jewelry, attended her share of auctions and garage sales, spent time visiting with her grandchildren, and made sure things were clean and in their place. She was strong in her faith and enjoyed her pets, especially her dog Joe.

Phyllis is survived by her rock and companion Horace “Pete” Fayette, her daughter Laurie Page of Florida, her son Richard and Diana Thayer of Jones Pond, her grandchildren Stacy Roberts, Nia Travis, Katelyn Thayer, Timothy Geer, Tommy Hentz, and several great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister Jean Smith of Edwards, several nieces and nephews. Phyllis is predeceased by her two husbands, her parents, a granddaughter Mandy Jo Thayer, and 12 siblings Philip, Robert Sr., and Frank Dashnaw, Margaret Ruport, Keitha House Retha Peacock, Doreen House, Isabelle Metzler, Mary Lucas, Betty Hemmingway, Dorothy Dashnaw, and Marion Dashnaw.

“Kaneratahawi” Elizabeth Moroughan

“KANERATAHAWI” ELIZABETH BETTY LAZORE MOROUGHAN

AKWESASNE – “Kaneratahawi” Elizabeth Betty Lazore Moroughan, 82, passed away on March 30, 2017, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease. She was a resident of the Tsiionkwanonhso:te Long-Term Care Home in Akwesasne since 2016.

Elizabeth was born June 5, 1934 on Yellow Island in Akwesasne, the daughter of the late Catherine Arquette and Frank Lazore. She attended Mohawk School and Bombay High School. She married the late Frank Jacobs in 1953 at the St. Regis Catholic Church in Akwesasne. The marriage ended in divorce in 1974. She married Emerton Moroughan in 1975 at the Carthage United Methodist Church in Carthage. He predeceased her in 1996.

From a young age, Elizabeth was always employed and she worked hard throughout her entire life. She retired in 1990 from the Greenbriar Nursing Home in Carthage and continued to work part time in private health care for many more years. Elizabeth loved to travel. She enjoyed playing Bingo, quilting, and tending her vegetable and flower gardens.

She was a life member of VFW Post 7227 and served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary for four years. She was also a life member of American Legion Post 789 and a member of the Elks Lodge 1762. She was an active volunteer in veterans’ service organizations for over thirty years.

Elizabeth is survived by five children; Rowena (George) General, Jennifer (late William) Francis, Erwin (Joanne) Jacobs, Ronald Jacobs, all residents of Akwesasne and Eldred Jacobs (Sharon) of Massena. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and by one sister Dorothy (Michael) Maher of Lancaster, NY.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers Andrew Lazore, and William Lazore; and three sisters, Eleanor Lazore Fowler, Mary Lazore Myers, and Helen Sunday Jock.

As per Elizabeth’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Services were with the Kanienkehaka Kaianerehkowa Kanonsesneh; with Loran Thompson, Francis Boots and Minnie Garrow conducting the death ceremony. Elizabeth will be cremated and burial will be held in Pierce Cemetery, Fort Drum, where her ashes will be buried with her late husband.

John A. Dorris

John A. Dorris, passed away 2 weeks shy of his 95th birthday in the emergency room at the Samaritan Medical Center. Mr. Dorris had been a resident at Samaritan Summit Village since June 2015.

John worked for New York Telephone as a cross-bar technician for 43 years in Watertown. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church and a life member of the American Legion and VFW in Watertown. He was also an active member and supporter of the 4 Rivers Historical Society in Champion.

Born in Utica April 16, 1922, he was a son to Frank and Anna Bazelle Dorris. John graduated from Canastota High School in 1940. He served in the Pacific on a special forces team with the United States Air Force during WW11

He married Lucille Ellen on March 5, 1943 in Yuma, Ariz. The couple moved to Watertown in 1950. They traveled extensively throughout Europe and Hawaii and spent winters in Lakeland, Fla. Lucille (Ellen) Dorris predeceased John on September 6, 1999. John was fortunate to have a second marriage to Velma Johnson until her death July, 2014.

Surviving are a son, John D., Milton, Ontario; two daughters, JoAnn E. Westcott, Rochester, and Nancy L. Allen, Watertown; 8 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren 2 sisters, Catherine and Mary and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents and wife John was predeceased by a beloved grandchild David Ilja Dorris.

A memorial service will be held on Monday April 3rd at 10 am at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home with the Rev. Leon VanWie officiating. A calling hour will be held on Sunday April 2nd from 4-5 pm at the funeral Home. A burial in the Oneida Castle Cemetery will be at a later date.

Donations may be made in his name to a charity of one’s choice.

TROUT LAKE – Eric “Rick” Davis Reed, age 72, of Trout Lake, passed away on March 30, 2017.

Calling hours will be held at French Funeral Home, 16 Barnes Street, Gouverneur NY, on Monday, April 3, 2017 from 2 – 4 and 6 – 9 p.m. His funeral service will be held at the United Church of Richville on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Karen Taylor and Pastor David Hart officiating.

Rick was born on October 14, 1944 in Liverpool, NY to the late Erie John and Helen (Davis) Reed. He attended the Richville School and graduated from the Gouverneur Central School in 1963. After graduation, Rick served in the United States Army from 1963 until his honorable discharge in 1966.

Rick had worked for the New York State Department of Transportation before becoming a New York State Trooper. He joined the Troopers on his birthday in 1968 and retired in 1992.

Mr. Reed married Patti (Porter) Ormsby on July 8, 1989. A previous marriage to Diane Bresett ended in divorce.

Rick loved time spent with family and friends at Reed’s Retreat on Trout Lake. He liked to hunt, kayak on the Grasse River, and fish. He enjoyed tinkering on anything that needed to be fixed, thought the older an engine was, the better it was, and would help out anybody and everybody. Like his parents before, Rick donated most of his time and created a secondary career in service of his community by assisting family, friends and those in need. Rick was the one person to call when you needed assistance with your biggest challenges in life. He and Patti liked to travel each year and have been to Europe, Hawaii and Alaska.

Every year on his birthday, the family would celebrate by jumping into Trout Lake together (Yes, during October). He would often bet his customary $1.00 on NASCAR races, and be sure to turn the TV off if his driver was losing. Rick was a former member of the Spruce Mountain Hunting Club, the Richville Fire Department, the Elks Lodge in Gouverneur, and the Gouverneur Rescue Squad.

His survivors include his wife, Patti of Trout Lake; four children, Kimberly and Scott Gerhart of Florida, Karole Elthorp of Gouverneur, David Reed and Linda Torres-Reed of Florida, and Kory Reed of Harrisville; sisters, Helen Mary McCumber of Loudonville, Janet and Robert Fields of Lorraine, and Carol and James Henderson of Mississippi. He is also survived by his step-children, Gary and Laurie Ormsby of Texas, Tricia and Joe Devito of Russell; his cousin, Paul Reed who was like a brother to him; 8 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is predeceased by his parents; a brother, Phillip John Reed, who died in infancy; and a brother-in-law, Clifford McCumber.

Mary L. Comins

Henderson – Mary L Comins, 92, one of Henderson’s oldest residents, died Thursday evening March 30th, 2017 at Samaritan Summit Village, Watertown. Calling hours will be 5-7 pm Wednesday April 5th at the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams, with her funeral service immediately following. Rev. Jerry Wichelns, pastor of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Adams will be officiating. Burial will be 10:00 am Thursday in the Evans Mills Cemetery.

Born on May 15th, 1924, she is the daughter of James and Lillian (Bacon) McAvoy. She attended school in Theresa and cared for her eight siblings. Later she was employed at the Olga Knitting Mill, Watertown.

She married Carl R. Comins, Evans Mills, on Feb. 10th, 1946. They first lived in Evans Mills, moved to Carthage until 1959, then moved to Sackets Harbor, where they, together operated a local diner on Main St. until 1966. In 1968 they became lifelong residents of the village of Henderson. Mr. Comins died July 29, 1989.

She is survived by a daughter, June (Comins) OBrien along with her companion Joseph Rizzo, Sackets Harbor. Also nine grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, plus an extended family of step grandchildren, step great and great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by two loving sisters, Edith Leddy, Great Bend and Flossie Edmonds, Tylerville; several nieces and nephews; and her faithful Chihuahua companion of 16 yrs, Paco.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Joan (Comins) Whiteford, a great granddaughter, Marissa Livingston, four brothers, John, Glenn, William and Paul McAvoy and two sisters, Beatrice Burnup and Pauline McAvoy.

Mary was a life member and past president of the South Jeff VFW Post 5344 and the American Legion Don Rounds Post 586 Auxiliary.

Mary was an avid seamstress and cook. Family and friends enjoyed her cooking and cake decorating talents, most notably birthday and wedding cakes. Her tacos were a hit at the Adams Legion, the VFW and Roadhouse Tavern. She often was fondly referred to as “Taco Mary”.

In her later years the Henderson Fire Department and Rescue Squad came to her aid multiple times. In her memory, donations to the same may be made at PO Box 50, Henderson, NY 13650
