CARTHAGE- James L. Newvine, of 222 State Street, formerly of 527 Francis Street, died on Monday, April 10, 2017 at the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg. He was born on October 16, 1949 in Hermon, New York to the Late Frank and Gertrude Barnhart Newvine. He attended school in Canton. He worked for various places as a Truck Driver, and The New York Airbrake in Watertown, NY.

He married Shirley Brayton in 2002 in Carthage. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, Carthage; 3 daughters, Tammy Hall, Carthage; Angela Deshane, Massena; Amy Jarvis, St. Regis Falls; and a son, Chris Newvine, Wisconsin. He is also survived by a sister, Joan Casario, Mexico, NY; 10-grandchildren, and 9-great-grandchildren.

He enjoyed fishing & hunting and his doing yardwork. He also loved to work on his truck.

Mr. Donato passed away April 7th in Glens Falls, NY.

He is survived by his parents, Lisa Donato-Oates, Watertown and Larry Plummer, Florida; five children Shawn MS Donato, Watertown; Madisyn Elliott, Phelps; Olivia Zimmerman-Donato, Spencerport; Giovanni Donato, Watertown; Liam Martin-Donato, Fort Edwards; his half-sister Terrah Plummer Frederick, Colorado; half -brother Garrett Plummer, Florida; his grandmother Velma Roselli, Watertown; Step-daughter Shantee Elliott, FL; wife Tracy Donato, Watertown; several aunts and uncles Richard Donato, Ann Donato, Francis (Nancy) Plummer, Steven Plummer, Bernard (Sandy) Plummer, Jimmy (Linda) Plummer and Brenda (Joe) Pacella and many close friends and dear cousins. He was predeceased by grandparents Paul Donato, step-father Francesco Roselli, Francis and Loretta Plummer and his half-brother Larry “Otti” Plummer, Jr..

Shawn was born in Watertown and attended Watertown High School, later obtaining his GED.

He worked as a cook in different restaurants and bakeries.

Shawn loved many outdoor sports, fishing, camping and many more. He was a loving and caring son, grandson, brother, cousin and a friend anyone could ask for. He had an enormous heart, easy going spirit and loved helping others. He will be truly and sadly missed by many.

CARTHAGE- Howard Gene Hallenbeck, Sr., 74, of of 29 Overlook Ave in Newton Falls, NY, formerly of Carthage, died on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at the SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. He moved to Newton Falls and lived with his daughter Janet after his retirement. He was born on March 5, 1943 in Norwich, New York to Clyde and Dorothy Hallenbeck.

He married Betty Champion, she died in 1993.

He worked for Braeman’s manufacturing in Carthage and then for a plastic factory in Texas.

He is survived by several children, Mary (David) Fetie, Potsdam; Tina (Mike) Delong, Carthage; Janet (Gery) Beirman, Newton Falls; Howard (Anita) Hallenbeck Jr., Norwich; Christine (Roger) Tiff, Vermont; and a step-daughter, Brandy Hart. He is also survived by several siblings, Roger, Gerald, Marion, and Joyce, and 14- grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Calling Hours will be held on Friday, April 14, 2017 from 2-4pm & 7-9pm at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc., located at 500 State Street in Carthage.

BEAVER FALLS – William D. Marolf, 85, of Beaver Falls, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, April 11, 2017 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Utica.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville, with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Stephen’s Cemetery. Calling hours are from 1 – 3 and 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, April 14, 2017 at the funeral home. He is survived by a son, James and Diana Marolf of Beaver Falls; a daughter, Jane and Stephen Monnat of Croghan; five grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jason Zehr; James Marolf, Jr.; Kelly and Andrew Juby; Michele and Andrew Nikitich; Patrick Monnat; eleven great-grandchildren, Morgan and Corey Stevens; Elijah Smith; Chloe, Paige and Macie Zehr; Alé Marolf; Maddison and Cassie Juby; Reece and Mia Nikitich; five sisters-in-law, Vada Marolf of Lowville; Ruth Sweeney of Lowville; Viola Marolf of Turin; Jackie Marolf of Colorado; Bessie Trembley of Carthage; many nieces and nephews. Bill is also survived by the family of the late Clara Marolf. He was predeceased by his first wife, Elberta, and his second wife, Clara; a son, William Marolf, Jr.; four sisters, Joyce Blair, Beulah Duffer, Francis Knight, and Eleanor Marolf; four brothers, Harry Marolf, Herbert Marolf, Gordon Marolf, and Glenfred Marolf.

William was born on March 14, 1932 at home, Toy Town, Town of Croghan, a son of the late Fred and Belva Hutchins Marolf. He attended Beaver Falls High School. Bill worked at J.P. Lewis paper mill before serving with the U.S. Army from 1950 until his honorable discharge as Sargent in 1953. On July 3, 1954, he married Elberta Trembley in Carthage. Elberta died on February 6, 2012. After his service, Bill worked for AMF, and Patten Plumbing and Heating in Croghan. He worked for Beaver River Central School for 27 years, retiring as Head Custodian in 1989. On August 13, 2016, he married Clara Marolf at Croghan Island, with Rev. Bruce W. Chapman officiating. Clara died January 25, 2017.

Mr. Marolf was a member of Beaver River Memorial Post 1663, Croghan American Legion, a member of Lewis County Memorial Post #6912, Lowville VFW, and an honorary member of the Beaver Falls Fire Department. Bill was a former member of the Mullin’s Pond Hunting Club. His hobbies and interests included chainsaw carving, square dancing with the North Country Swingers, snow sledding, traveling with his camper and taking his grandchildren with him, driving with no destination and watching softball games. He was an avid outdoorsman.

Louis Edgar Zaluski, 84, of Edwards, NY, passed away April 10, 2017, at the Gouverneur Hospital.

Louis was born July 23, 1932, in Southampton, Long Island, the son of the late Stanley and Dorris Backus Zaluski. He graduated from Edwards Central School in 1951. On October 9, 1951, he married Jean Anne Whitmarsh who passed away in October of 2016.

After serving four years in the navy, Louis delivered milk for the Edwards milk plant before taking a job with the Gouverneur Talc Company. He held various positions with the company and eventually would become the mine foreman, retiring in 1994.

“Snook,” as he was affectionately known as by his friends and family, was an avid hunter and longtime member of the Pine Tree hunting club.

Surviving are a son, Steven L. (Kathy) Zaluski, of Adams Center, N.Y., a daughter, Chris A. (Ralph) Smith, of Cazenovia, N.Y., four grandchildren, Heather (Daniel) Tarzia, of Watertown, N.Y., Sarah (Ehimika) Ohiorhenuan, of Los Angles, Ca., Christopher (Erin) Smith, of Randolph, N.J. and Scott( Jennifer) Smith, of Huntersville, N.C.; five great grandchildren, a sister Constance Zaluski Desmond, of Lawrenceville, N.J., a brother-in-law Richard Whitmarsh, of Edwards, N.Y., a sister-in-law, Sally Capone (Salvator), of Star Lake, N.Y., and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Stanley, predeceased him.

CARTHAGE – Wanda Julia Burns, 93, 507 West St., died early Thursday morning, April 13, 2017 at the Hospice House of Jefferson County in Watertown.

Born in Rector, NY on April 12, 1924, the daughter of William and Julia McDonald Burns. She graduated High School from the Carthage Augustinian Academy and then from the Watertown School of Commerce. She was previously employed by several local physicians’ offices, but was primarily a caretaker for her mother and her sisters. Wanda was a member of the St. James Catholic Church in Carthage.

She is survived by her sister, Thelma. She is predeceased by her four sisters; Frances, Mary, Naomi and Norma.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 15th at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, with the Rev. Donald Robinson and the Rev. Canon Samuel P. Lundy officiating. Calling hours will held on Saturday, prior to the service from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Burial will be in Lowville Rural Cemetery.

Stephen J. Zimmerman, 69, passed away at his home in Watertown on Tuesday, April 11, 2017.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., 214 Sterling St., Watertown on Thursday, April 20, from 4 - 7PM. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30AM on Friday, April 21, at Holy Family Church with Rev. Steven Murray, pastor, presiding. Burial in Calvary Cemetery will be at the family’s convenience.

Steve was born in Watertown on November 6, 1947, son of William T. and Alberta I. Sixbury Zimmerman. He was a 1965 graduate of Watertown High School and attended Jefferson Community College. Steve entered the US Army on September 7, 1967 and was honorably discharged from the reserves on August 7, 1973. He married Jane J. Leary on October 4, 1969 at Emmanuel Congregational Church and although the marriage ended in divorce, the two remained friends.

Steve served as Executive Vice President of Key Bank of Northern New York and then as Senior Vice President of Jefferson National Bank. He later worked for Prudential Insurance Company and most recently for United Professional Advisors. Earlier in his career, he also served as an adjunct instructor at Jefferson Community College. Steve was Catholic and a member of Elks Lodge 496. Throughout his career, he was involved with many organizations including the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, American Heart Association, Black River Valley Club, United Way of Jefferson County, Ives Hill Country Club, and Italian American Civic Association.

Steve very much enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, especially at their sporting events. He enjoyed playing golf and took pride in helping with the annual DiStefano Memorial Golf Tournament. Steve was an avid Yankees and Syracuse fan, and he never missed an episode of The Young and The Restless. When not with his family or friends, Steve could usually be found in the comfort of his recliner catching up on politics, or watching The Bachelor, The Voice, or Dancing with the Stars while enjoying many Klondike bars.

Steve is survived by his three children, Justin J. Zimmerman and wife, Joy W., Adams, Lauren S. Zimmerman, Webster, and Kristen J. Zimmerman, Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren, Quincey J., Jenna C., and Jayna H. Zimmerman; two brothers and their wives, William F. and Susan E. Zimmerman and Frederick C. and Lorraine J. Zimmerman, all of Watertown; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, William, September 14, 1996, mother, Alberta, December 15, 2013, and brother, William R., 1941.
