Calling hours will be held at French Funeral Home, 16 Barnes Street, Gouverneur NY 13642 on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Her funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m. with Father Shane Lynch officiating.

Merrill A. Peters, 74, of Watertown passed away at his home Wednesday afternoon, April 6, 2017.

Calling hours will be held at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., 214 Sterling St., Watertown on Wednesday, April 12, from 4-7PM. The funeral service will be at the funeral home on Thursday, April 13, at 11AM with Pastor Jeff Smith, of First Baptist Church, presiding. Following the service, friends are invited to American Legion Post 61, 138 Sterling St., Watertown from 12:30-2:30PM. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

Merrill was born in Watertown on October 6, 1942, son of Ernest F. and Dorothy M. Armstrong Peters and he attended General Brown School. He entered the US Army, serving in Vietnam, and was honorably discharged on May 21, 1974. He was a cab driver for Yellow Cab for 25 years.

One of his greatest joys was helping other veterans and being an advocate for them. He was a volunteer driver and member of DAV and also drove for Peer to Peer Outreach Center. Merrill was a member of the American Legions in Watertown and Dexter and the Vietnam Veterans of NYS. He enjoyed cars, the outdoors, Thompson Park, traveling, and especially his dogs.

He is survived by his long-time companion and fiancée, Bonnie LaBow, Watertown; four children, Debbie Buckley and Rita Marbut, both in Alabama, Maggie Bidwell and companion, Stanley Brown, Watertown, and Eric Ames and fiancée, Jennifer Typhair, Dexter; thirteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren; two brothers, Fred Peters, Carthage and Billy Peters, Adams Center; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.

Mary Jane (Coniski) Elen, 94, of Clayton and formerly of Liverpool, passed away peacefully on Friday at the Hospice House of Jefferson County surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 11, 1922 in Oswego, a daughter of the late Theodore and Agnes (Schram) Coniski. On August 27, 1949 she married John L. Elen of Scriba NY, and together they came to Liverpool where she raised her family. Mary was a parishioner of St. Joseph the Worker Church and a member of their Altar Rosary Society for many years. She is predeceased by her husband, John L. Elen in 1990, five brothers and four sisters.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Karen M. (Bob) Buckland of Chamont, NY and Sandra A. Elen of Liverpool, four grandsons, five great-granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at St. Joseph the Worker Church, 1001 Tulip St. Liverpool followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:30 am. The Rite of Committal and Entombment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum, DeWitt.

Donald W. Shelmidine

The funeral for Donald W. Shelmidine will be 11 am Tuesday April 11th at the Belleville Methodist Church with Rev. Rebekah Solar, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Woodside Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday April 10th from 2 pm – 4 pm and 6 pm – 8 pm at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville.

Mr. Shelmidine, 88, of State Rt. 289, Belleville, passed away Friday April 7th at his home.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; his children Douglas (Susan) Shelmidine, Belleville, Terry Lynn Shelmidine, Rochester, Kathy L. Shelmidine (Mickey Plumpton), Watertown, Julia (Michael) Austin, Norwich, Todd Shelmidine, Belleville and Scott P. Shelmidine, Watertown; his step-children Alicia Rowsam and Brian Tucker, both of Watertown, Thomas (Kathy) Tucker, Adams; 15 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, George, John and Clarence Shelmidine and a sister Caroline Lawrence.

Don was born in Lorraine, January 21, 1929, a son to Carroll and Gladys Schriver Shelmidine. He was a 1947 graduate of Adams High School. Following his education, he served with the US Navy from 1950-1952. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Don returned home to operate the family farm with his brother Clarence.

In 1963, Don and Jan bought her father’s, Harry Williams, farm on Rt 79, Belleville, now called Sheland Farms, and was a partner with his sons and grandson at the time of his passing.

Besides farming, Don also sold Harvester Silos, was a real estate broker and worked in the insurance and financial planning field for many years.

Don married Janice Williams October 8th, 1955 at the Belleville Methodist Church. Mrs. Shelmidine passed February 11, 2000. He later married Donna Tucker April 20, 2002 at the Belleville Methodist Church. They spent many winters at the Live Oak Retirement Park in Florida where he enjoyed playing bridge and golf. Don was an avid fan of NY Giants, SU basketball and NY Yankees.

Mr. Shelmidine was a member of the Belleville Methodist Church and the Woodside Cemetery Board. He was a 60 year member of the Holstein Association, the Farm Bureau and the Fellowship of Christian Farmers, holding leadership roles in those organization as well as many other farming related associations. He had served on the Board of Education at Belleville Central School, including a term as President.

Michael (Mike) Cadden Miller passed away on April 2, 2017 at the age of 74.

Michael Miller was a citizen of the world having dual residency in London, England and Watertown, New York. After serving in the United States Air Force, Mike committed his 45-year career to the institutional advancement of independent and international schools across the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

In particular, he was the Director of External Affairs at The American School in London from 1998-2008 and Principal of MLW Consultants, LLC until his passing.

Over the course of his career, Mike served professionally on the committees for the European Council for International Schools (ECIS) and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Mike received CASE’s Robert Bell Crow Award for Excellence in the Independent Advancement Field and Europe Award for Distinguished Service to International Schools.

Mike was a great believer in supporting community and gave generously of his time and talent serving on countless boards and supporting numerous organizations in his hometown of Watertown including: Samaritan Medical Center, Orchestra of Northern New York, Northern New York Arts Council, Watertown Urban Mission, TIERS, First Presbyterian Church of Watertown, and many others.

Mike graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon (Class of 1960), Union College (Class of 1964), and completed his Masters in School Administration and International Education at the University of Michigan.

Mike is survived by his husband, Clement Wong; his niece Debbie Jankanish and her husband Greg Jankanish; his niece Wendy Cadden Thomas and her husband Bill Thomas and their children, Benjamin Cadden Thomas and Mathew Thomas.

A private service will be held on April 6, 2017 at Mortlake Crematorium in London, England for family and close friends with the hope of planning a Celebration of Life for Michael in London later in the year.

A memorial service will be held on April 28, 2017 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 403 Washington Street, Watertown, NY 13601.

A memorial fund has been established in Mike’s name to honor his deep passion and commitment for music, the arts and education. Donations in his name may be sent to:

CROGHAN- Funeral services for Anthony Zehr, 94, Belfort Rd., will be held 10 AM Thursday April 13th at the Crystal Light Mennonite Church, Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 1-4 and 6-9 PM on Wednesday, April 12 at the church.

Anthony went to be with his Lord on Sunday April 9th 2017 at Lewis County General Hospital.

He was born in Belfort, April 5th, 1923 to Andrew and Mollie Roggie Zehr. On August 22, 1946, he married Arlene Nafziger at the Lowville Mennonite Church. Together they operated his family’s farm in Belfort and the family sugarbush in Long Pond. He was a dealer for Leader Evaporator Company and a maple syrup dealer for many years.

He was a member of the Hope Mennonite Fellowship where he was active in various capacities.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Arlene, nine children, Ivan(Rachel), Waterloo, Melvin(Bertha), Lowville, Lois(Daniel) Lyndaker, Castorland, Andrew(Ruth), Joseph(Joanne), Steven(Nancy), Timothy, and Eugene(Loreen), all of Croghan; 55 grandchildren and 98 great- grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Arletha Bender Yoder, Watson, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant children, Darius and Ann, teo brothers, Earl and Leo, three sisters, Katherine Martin, Leona Lyndaker and Doris Moser, a grandson, Daniel Zehr and a daughter in law, Sonya Zehr .

Robert E. Dailey

Robert E. Dailey, 78, passed away February 23, 2017 at CMC University in Charlotte, NC.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Becker-Cleveland Funeral Home, Chaumont, NY.

Robert was born October 4, 1938 in Watertown, NY to the late Donald and Frieda (Quencer) Dailey of Three Mile Bay. He grew up, and enjoyed the Three Mile Bay area, where many of his relatives lived. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Maryln (Bovee) Dailey; sons Vincent E. Dailey (Anne) of Charlotte and Donald H. Dailey (Gennie O. Moyal) of Austin, TX; one grandson; and brother Jim Mucklewee of East Aurora, NY. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his stepsister and her husband, Mary Ann and Charles Yott of Three Mile Bay, NY.

Robert (Bob) was a veteran of the US Navy and studied at SUNY Canton. While he lived in Bergen, NY Bob worked as a Systems Analyst with Sperry Rand and Unisys. He was an avid square dancer, served as president of the Rochester Area Square Dance Federation, and along with Maryln was awarded the prestigious Daphne­Norma Leadership Award in 1983. After retirement in Atlanta, GA. and later Charlotte, Bob enjoyed genealogy, stamp collecting, playing his fiddle and was a skilled woodworker.

The family held a visitation at Raymer­Kepner Funeral Home on February 26, 2017 from 4 ­ 6pm. Robert will be buried at 3 Mile Bay cemetery, May 19, 2017 at 11:00am.

ANTWERP- Sharon R. Mills, 67, of US Rt. 11, died Saturday, April 8, 2017 at her home.

Born on December 29, 1949 in Watertown, NY, she was a daughter of Raymond E. and Arloween H. Meeks Cook. She was educated at Indian River Central School, Philadelphia, NY and graduated from Jefferson Community College in 1977.

Sharon married Thomas S. Mills of Antwerp, NY on June 29, 1966 in Philadelphia, NY.

She was district clerk for Indian River Central Schools, Philadelphia, NY for 37 years, retiring in 2011.

She loved spending time with her family, good food, good wine and spring breaks in Tybee Island, GA.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Thomas, Sr.; three children, two sons, Thomas Mills, Jr. and Raymond Mills, both of Antwerp, NY, a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and John McCormick, Theresa, NY; four grandchildren, Michael McCormick, Lowville, NY, Cole McCormick, Rosendale, NY, Courtney (Taylor) Nolte, Antwerp, NY and Chandler Mills, Antwerp, NY; a sister and brother-in-law, Dawne and Michael Frederick, Adams Center, NY; a brother and sister-in-law, Brent and Cindy Cook, Lacona, NY; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents and a brother, Bruce F. Cook all died before her.

Calling hours will be 4-7 pm Thursday, April 13, 2017 at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, NY.

Mrs. Horning, 90, of Watertown, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 9th, was reunited with her husband on the day that would have been their 70th wedding anniversary.

She is survived by two sons Ronald (Tanna), LaFargeville and Thomas, Watertown; three daughters Karen Loftus (Len Edus), Watertown, Marcia (Mark) La Forest, Theresa, and Brenda (Larry) Dorr, Black River; 12 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister Jane Godfrey and two brothers Edward and David Metz.

Louise was predeceased by her son-in-law Joseph Loftus in November of 1992.

She was born in Watertown, April 14, 1926, a daughter to Howard and Helen Browski Metz. After her high school education, Louise graduated from Plattsburg State Teaching College in 1947. Following her graduation, she worked as a Registered Nurse at the House of the Good Samaritan (now Samaritan Medical Center) and later at the Jefferson Rehabilitation Center.

Louise married Wellington “Lucky” Horning April 9, 1947 at Holy Family Church. Mr. Horning, a retired City of Watertown policeman, died February 20, 2003.

Louise was a member of Holy Family Church, the Samaritan Loyals and the Plattsburg Alumni Association. She enjoyed camping, gardening, attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and her independence to go and do what and when she wanted to in her later years.

Kathleen E. Kelly

Kathleen E. Kelly, 87, formerly of Canton, died Sunday, April 9, 2017 at St. John’s Home in Rochester, NY.

Kathleen was born February 20, 1930, in South Colton, NY, a daughter of the late, Allie Fisher Harden. She was a graduate of Colton-Pierrepont High School.

On May 4, 1957, she married Thomas Kelly at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton. Thomas died in 1996.

She was employed as a Senior Account Clerk for the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services for many years, retiring in 1991.

Kathleen is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Thomas) Sangiacomo of Fairport, NY and two grandchildren, David (Molly Getsloff) and Gina of Rochester, NY. She is also survived by several cousins and nieces.

In addition to her husband, Thomas, she was predeceased by her other daughter, Lori Kelly in 1974.

Kathleen was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Potsdam, where she served as a Bible School Teacher. She was also a Girl Scout Leader and was known for her knitting skills.

In 2015, Kathleen moved to Rochester to be closer to her daughter, Barbara.

Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 7:00 PM at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 21 Park Street, Canton with Pastor Leach officiating. The family will receive friends and family at the funeral home from 4-7 PM prior to the funeral.

Burial will be Thursday in Evergreen Cemetery, Canton.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. John’s Home in Rochester for their compassionate care of her over the last year and a half. Three years prior to that she was cared for at Maplewood Assisted Living in Canton.

Canton: Anita R. Kimble, 75, of Canton, peacefully passed away at home on Saturday (April 8, 2017) surrounded by her loving family while under the care of Hospice.

Anita was born on June 11, 1941 in Ogdensburg, NY, the daughter of Clarence “Joe” and Jennie (Phelix) Hitsman. Her family moved to Stony Point, NY where she attended school in Haverstraw, NY, graduating in 1958. She was employed at Spiewak Jackets, Lederle Laboratories and the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Anita married George E. Kimble, Jr. on June 11, 1961 at Thiells Methodist Church with the Rev. Alter J. Hofheinz officiating. The couple moved to Madrid, NY in 1972 where she worked for the St. Lawrence National Bank and then later at St. Lawrence County Real Property Tax Office, retiring in December of 2000.

Anita is survived by her husband George, two sons, George J. and his wife Debra of Potsdam, Robert S. and his wife Danyette of Ogdensburg, a daughter, Barbara and her husband Keith Matthie of Madrid; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; several step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and step great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents and her only sister, Jean Pfeister.

At Anita’s request, there will be no public calling hours. Burial will take place in Madrid Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions in Anita’s name may be made to St. Lawrence Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.

Barbara C. Gilbo

Barbara C. Gilbo, 85, of Watertown, passed April 10, 2017 at the Colonial Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Rome where she has resided since 2013.

The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, April 13 at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown.

Calling hours will precede the service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in the N. Watertown Cemetery.

Born on January 17, 1932 in Chaumont, NY, daughter of Emmett and Mildred (Evie) Horton, she graduated from Chaumont High School in 1949.

She married Harold E. Gilbo on June 1, 1957 at the Chaumont Presbyterian Church. He passed in 2006.

Mrs. Gilbo worked fifty years for several local trucking companies such as Teals, Seaway Motors, Seabury and Burns Express as a computer clerk, retiring in 2003.

She enjoyed Bingo and was a member of the Grace Wesleyan Church in Watertown.

Among her survivors are two sons and two daughters in law, Norman H. and Joy M. Gilbo, Watertown, Jeffrey R. and Pam M. Gilbo, O’Fallon, Missouri; a daughter, Debra M. Gilbo, Sackets Harbor; three grandchildren, two great grandchildren; a brother and sister in law, Kent and Pat Horton, Chaumont; a sister and brother in law, Marianne and Nick Cuppernall, Chaumont; several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his father, Thomas J. Simpson; a brother, Thomas J. Simpson; his maternal grandparents, Rose and Leo Ouellette; his paternal grandparents, Wesley and Estelle Simpson.

Michael was born on March 29, 1977 in Lowville, NY, a son of Thomas J. and Frances Ouellette Simpson. He attended Lowville Academy. He worked for Lodging Kit Company in Boonville for ten years, and more recently worked for Shue Brothers Excavating and Logging, where he really enjoyed doing trash removal. On September 27, 2008, he married Bethany M. Poore at St. Patrick’s Church, Highmarket, with Rev. Paul Joslyn officiating.

Michael enjoyed working in the woods, cutting trees and four-wheeling. He loved kayaking, hiking and camping. Most of all, he loved playing with his children, McKenna, Kayden and Skyler.
