Diana M. Sacco, 76, 727 Holcomb Street, passed away April 2, 2017, at the Samaritan Medical Center.

Diana was born May 25, 1940, in Earlville, NY, daughter of Robert and Phyllis Blanchard Preston. She graduated from Earlville High School and IBM School of Commerce, Utica, N.Y.

On January 31, 1959 she married Daniel L. Sacco at St. Mary’s Church in Hamilton, NY. The couple lived in several areas of the state and were finally transferred to Watertown, N.Y., by the New York State Police.

Diana is survived by her husband Daniel, two sons, Daniel Jr. and his wife Shana, Golden, CO, Scott and his partner Angela Spano Watertown NY, a daughter, Lori McDevitt Watertown, NY, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter Terri and a brother William R Preston.

Diana was a health aid at Sherman Street School and owned and operated D’s Antiques, was a realtor for Timmerman Reality, then Coldwell Banker until her retirement in 2014. During her employment as a realtor, she received many awards for excellence, including the prestigious “tri-county Realtor of the Year.”

Diana was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church, a member of the St. Patrick’s Church Altar Rosary Society and was a member of the Antique Dealers Association.

She loved gardening, working with antiques, fishing with her husband and children above all else.

Calling hours will be Sunday, April 9, 2017, from 2-5 pm at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. A funeral mass will be held at 10 am Monday, April 10, 2017 at St. Patrick’s Church with Msgr. Newark— Keith M. Clarke, 82, passed away on Tuesday (April 4, 2017) at the DeMay Living Center in Newark, New York.

Friends may call from 1:00 to 4:00 PM on Saturday (April 8th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 E. Miller St. Newark, NY. A graveside Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday (April 9th) at the Military Cemetery in Sackets Harbor.

Keith was born in Sackets Harbor, New York the son of Clinton and Olive Folsom Clarke on June 25, 1934. Mr. Clarke served in the U.S.M.C. During the Korean War. He worked as a Pressman for Kodak. In 1991, he retired after a 26 year career.

Keith is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lucile; his son Timothy (Marie Davenport) of Newark ; a daughter Karen (William) Czaja of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; a brother Ron ( Jo Anne) Clarke of Florida; three sisters Lori (David) LaLone of Adams, NY, Donna (Bruce) Thomas of Henderson Harbor, NY and Carole Doyle of Copenhagen, NY. Mr. Clarke was predeceased by three siblings.

Beverly Smith

Lyons Falls- Beverly (Jackson) Smith, 76, of Cherry St., widow of Frank, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at Rome Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Turin, on January 10, 1941, a daughter of William A. and Helen Brown Jackson. Beverly grew up in Turin and graduated from General Martin High School, Glenfield, with the Class of 1959. Thereafter she was employed at Griffiss Airforce Base, Rome.

On June 27, 1959, Beverly was united in marriage with Frank C. Smith, at the Turin United Methodist Church. Afterwards the couple resided in Turin for many years before moving to Lyons Falls. Mr. Smith, a U.S. Army Veteran and retiree from Lyons Falls Pulp and Paper Co. passed away on June 11, 2003.

For many years until retiring in 2015, Mrs. Smith was employed as a school bus driver for South Lewis Central School District, in Turin. For several years she was also employed in the meat department at Lyons Falls Great American and at Foodland, in Boonville.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Turin United Methodist Church and a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She greatly enjoyed playing Bingo at the Turning Stone Casino. In earlier years Beverly greatly enjoyed bowling, participating in several bowling leagues in Boonville and Lowville.

She is survived by one son, William E. Smith, Lyons Falls; three daughters, Debra (Maynard B.) Hirschey, Glenfield, Denise Rhone, Madison, Alabama and Dianne Smith, Lyons Falls; three grandchildren, Katie Lynn Butts, Kellie Ann Smith and Frank Hirschey and one brother, William D. (Patricia) Jackson, Lowville.

Her Funeral will be Friday at 11:00 A.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. 143 Schuyler St. Boonville, where Pastor Patricia Hubman, of the Turin United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Turin Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Peter J. Tennis

MASSENA – Mr. Peter J. Tennis, 93, of Ober Street, passed away Saturday afternoon, April 1, 2017 at Massena Memorial Hospital.

Pete was born August 30, 1923 in Poughkeepsie, New York, the son of the late Peter and Laura Phillips Tennis. He graduated from Arlington High School and Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. On November 1, 1943, he entered the US Army Air Force, proudly serving his country until his honorable discharge on August 24, 1945. On December 18, 1950, he was drafted back into service, serving until his honorable discharge on August 30, 1952.

Pete worked for Reynolds Metals for many years, retiring as a Mechanical Engineer. He was also a skilled pilot and owned his own plane, where he and his late wife, Marge, traveled around the country many times. Pete had a great passion for golfing and would be found regularly at the Massena Country Club, where he was a longtime member. Pete dedicated many years of his time to the Massena community as a volunteer driver of Massena Meals on Wheels, delivering until he was 92. Pete was also an Honorary Life member of the Massena Lions Club, a longtime communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church, and formerly a communicant of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church before its closure. A lifelong fan of the New York Giants and Mets, he enjoyed watching games on television as well as other sporting games. He truly cherished the time he spent and the friends he visited with at the Via Main Restaurant.

Pete is survived by his children, Patricia and Angelo Derrigo of Clayton and Roger and Janet Tennis of Tempe, Arizona; his grandchildren, Michelle Tennis, Margaret and Nathan Rodriquez, and Mark Tennis; his nieces and nephews, Kelly (Jim) Tremper, Laura (Jan) deGraaf, Dick (MaryAnn) Vosburgh, Bob (Sylvia) Vosburgh, Sue (Jim) Pelish, and Allyn (Connie) Szejko; and their families.

In addition to his parents, Pete was predeceased by his wife, Margaret “Marge” (Christoph) Tennis on March 28, 2006; his half sisters, Laura Depue and Ruth Vosburgh; and his half brothers, Jack and Fred Caulkins.

A Funeral Mass celebrating Pete’s life will be celebrated 2:00PM, Saturday, April 8, 2017 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 139 Main Street, Massena with Mother Kathryn Boswell, celebrating. Entombment will follow in the Columbarium at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Massena Meals on Wheels, St. John’s Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, Massena Lions Club or the Massena Country Club.

A memorial services for Earl W. “Butch” Phillips, age 69 of Ogdensburg will be held at 11:00am on Friday (April 7, 2017) at the Grace Baptist Church on Greene Street in Ogdensburg with Pastor Harold “Yogie” Best officiating. Burial will follow services at Grove Street Cemetery in Gouverneur.

Calling hours will be held also on Friday from 9-11am at the church prior to the services. Mr. Phillips passed away at his home unexpectedly on Sunday (April 2, 2017).

Surviving is his wife Bonnie; two sons Scott Phillips, Carl Phillips & his companion Heather Perry; and a daughter Michelle Phillips all of Ogdensburg; a brother Bruce (Brenda) Phillips of Florida; two sisters Jane (John) Fleming of Sturgis, SD and Trudy (Chris) Ellis of Gouverneur; along with three grandchildren and many nieces, nephews & cousins. Three brothers Larry, Vance & David Phillips predeceased him.

Butch was born on August 7, 1947 in Watertown NY, a son of the late Vance & Carol (Walton) Phillips. He graduated from Gouverneur High School and entered the US Army from 1966 to 1969 as a Military Police Officer. Following his discharge, he later married Bonnie Lindsay on January 24, 1970 at St. Mary’s Cathedral.

During his career he worked at the Natural Dam Paper Mill, and as an open pit miner most of his life in Parachute, CO. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to hockey games, playing softball and bowling, joking around with others, his dogs and spending time with his family. LeRoy T. Tharrett, Sr.

LeRoy Thomas Tharrett, Sr., age 79, of Gouverneur passed away on April 2, 2017 at home under the care of his family and hospice.

LeRoy was born on February 12, 1938 to the late Milton and Leta Tharrett.

He is survived by his daughters Shelley Tharrett & Gordon Richmond of Cape Vincent and Sherri Mandigo & Nelson Martin of Oswegatchie; a son LeRoy Jr. (Fred) and Tammy Tharrett of Gouverneur; grandchildren, great grandchildren; sister Lorette Patton of Gouverneur, wife and step children.

He was predeceased by his parents, a brother and 5 sisters.

LeRoy loved spending time with his family, grandkids, and his hobby shop. He was a military Army veteran 1956-1959.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, April 9 from 2-5pm at the Gouverneur VFW with military honor. All family and friends are welcome. Thank you to French Funeral Home and Hospice.

Edith M. Pfaff

Edith Mae Pfaff, 92, of Watertown, NY, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 30th with family by her side.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Cleveland Funeral Home Inc., of Watertown, NY.

A memorial celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, May 20th 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church in Watertown. A burial will be at Sunny Side Cemetery in Lewis County.

Mrs. Pfaff was born February 16th, 1925 at her family home in bustling Detroit, MI, to Harold Eugene and Jessie Duer Webb. She was the youngest of five girls and one brother, Wendell, who died as a child.

Edith was a 1942 graduate of Detroit Public Schools and later attended business college. She and her sisters enjoyed summers on Hickory Island at Grosse Isle, MI., as well as, sailing, swimming, and the annual Hickory Day parade, games and dance. It was there that she met her husband Eugene Pfaff, a primary flight instructor, Lieutenant, USNR. He had either dated or attempted to date all of her sisters before discovering his true love. They were married March 10, 1945 in Detroit.

The couple moved to northern New York in 1950 and set up residence in Watertown. Here they became active members of the community and met many life-long friends. “Edie” enjoyed giving her time and energy as a volunteer for the Samaritan Keep Home, House of the Good Samaritan Auxiliary, and Red Cross Blood Drives. She and Gene were members of the Black River Valley Club, Ives Hill Country Club, Crescent Yacht Club, Innisbrook Golf and Country Club, Tarpon Springs, FL, and Countryside Golf Club in Naples, FL. She was also a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, Watertown, Sacket’s Harbor Presbyterian Church and North Naples Church, Naples, FL.

Over the years, Edie and Gene enjoyed travelling world-wide and organizing social events with friends. She played tennis and was an ardent Bridge player. Mrs. Pfaff also enjoyed spending time at a summer home on Lake Ontario at Campbell’s Point, NY.

Mrs. Pfaff is survived by, a sister, Carolyn Ann MacDonald, three sons, David (Michelle), William (Lori), and Murray (Monique), one daughter, Rebecca Brown (William), seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Her husband, Eugene D. Pfaff, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Pfaff’s final wishes were for everyone to celebrate a life well lived. As example, she was playing cards, and living on her own until just a few weeks ago.

Lansing R. Laraway

Canton-- Lansing (Lanse) Richard Laraway passed away at the age of 70 on April 4, 2017, in his home in Canton, NY.

Lanse was born on March 6, 1947, in Philmont, NY to Richard and Eleanor Laraway. He was an only child. Lanse graduated from Ockawamick High School in 1965 and received a Bachelors Degree in Music Education/Voice from the Crane School of Music SUNY Potsdam in 1969. Lanse was a member of the music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Simphonia, and was the President of the Crane School of Music Alumni Association for many years. He was hired right out of college by Canton Central Schools where he was the Jr./Sr. Hugh C. Williams Vocal Music Teacher until 1988. Lanse then worked in Governeur Schools as the Jr./Sr. Vocal Music Teacher until his retirement. After his retirement Lanse was an adjunct instructor of voice at St. Lawrence University, Canton.

Lanse is survived by his former wife Valerie, two Aunts, Kay Starks in Dunedin, FL and Doris Peluso in Long Island, NY, several cousins in the Philmont/Albany area, the many students he taught over the years and numerous Church friends.

Lanse’s passion was music. He was an organist in a local church in Philmont, NY when he was still in High School. He played trumpet in his HS band and was the organist at the Canton United Methodist Church from 1969 to the present. Lanse also loved Barbershop Music. He sang in the barbershop quartet the Adirondack Harmony Company since the 1970’s and directed the men’s chorus the Goldenaires off and on for many years. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists and a NYSSMA Zone #5 Representative.

Lanse was an incredible teacher. Patient, kind with a wonderful sense of humor. Many of his students have gone on to have musical careers of their own. He loved teaching, and he loved his students. Lanse had the most beautiful tenor voice. He was always humble about his musical talent, but he was a phenomenal vocalist, pianist and organist.

Calling Hours will be held on Saturday, April 8, from 4-6 PM at the Lawrence Funeral Home, 21 Park Street, Canton.

Memorial services for Lanse will be held on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Canton United Methodist Church, 41 Court Street, with Rev. Michael H. Terrell officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Funeral arrangements are with Lawrence Funeral Home, Canton.

Vickie L. Kehne

Vickie L. (Habeeb) Kehne, 69, of NYS Rt. 37, Evans Mills, passed April 1, 2017 at her home where she was under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Born on May 12, 1947 in Watertown, NY, daughter of Victor and Lillian Habeeb, she graduated from WHS in 1966.

She went to work at the Samaritan Medical Center and retired in 2007 following 38 years as a Physical Therapist Assistant.

She married Gary L. Kehne on May 31, 1980 at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Watertown. The couple resided in Watertown and moved to Evans Mills in 1983.

Mr. Kehne retired from the US Armed Forces in 1982 and in 2000 retired as Director of Environmental and Regulatory Affairs from Samaritan Medical Center and Facility’s.

Vickie was a member of the Watertown Elks Lodge #496 and enjoyed volunteering at the lodge, she was former president of the Red Hat Society, member of the Trinity Episcopal Church women’s group and knitting prayer shawl group and a member of the Safari Club International Sables Organization.

Among her survivors are her husband; Gary L. Kehne, Evans Mills; a sister and brother in law, Gloria H. and Dale W. Gardner, Canton and Port Orange, FL; two brothers and two sisters in law Nicholas C. and Susan Habeeb, Phoenix, AZ, Peter G. and Michelle Rupp, Landsdale, PA; several nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins.

Calling hours will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 12 at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home.

A Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 13 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Watertown.

Rishel “Rick” White

Rishel “Rick” White, 95, longtime resident of Adams, died Thursday morning at his home. A memorial service will be 2:00 pm Wednesday at the Piddock Funeral Home, Adams, with Rev. N. Bud Masters officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Maple View Cemetery, Maple View, NY.

Calling hours will precede the funeral beginning at 12:00 pm.

Born October 31, 1921 in Wharton, West Virginia, he was one of five brothers and three sisters born to parents Ellsworth and Bessie Mae White.

Following his graduation from Van High School in Van West Virginia, he worked locally before joining the U.S. Army in 1941. At the beginning of World War II, Rishel was attached to the 1st Armored Division at Fort Knox Kentucky before being sent on a cadre to Pine Camp to form the 4th Armored Division in 1942. He contracted Rheumatic Fever and was hospitalized for months becoming dis-attached from the 4th Armored.

While in the North Country he met Adams resident Shirley (Weeden) White and they married in Columbia, South Carolina in 1943, where he was sent by the Army to form the 106th Infantry Division at Fort Jackson.

His division was sent to Europe where it was caught in the German counter-attack of 1944 known as The Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes forest region of Belgium. He was captured by German forces and spent a harrowing five months as a POW in Stalag 4B near Dresden in Germany. Liberated by Russian forces moving west, he again survived a week-long trek back to the American lines, and spent the next 10 months in hospital, first in England, then at the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. It was here he met his brother Mondell, who had been captured by the Japanese in the Philippines in 1942 and had survived the war after having been moved to Japan.

Rishel was discharge in 1946, and came back to the North Country and worked a number of jobs including the Sears Roebuck store in Watertown before starting as a civilian worker at Fort Drum in the supply warehouse, retiring in 1983.

His wife Shirley, a former Adams Librarian, passed away in December 2005.

He is survived by two sons, Michael E. (Jane) White, Watertown, and R.D. White, Sackets Harbor; three grandchildren Matthew A. White (wife Hinda Mandell), Pittsford NY, Sarah J. White, Champlain College in Burlington VT, and Amanda Vecchio (White), Watertown; 5 great grandchildren,, five great grandchildren, one brother Harry Readith “Reedy” White, Henderson; and many nieces and nephews.

His three brothers, Pershing, Mondell, Bill, and three sisters Marina May, Imogene, and Ina May all predeceased him.

Rick was a well-known character about town in Adams known for his practical jokes, jovial manner and greeting everyone with “Hey, Partner”. He enjoyed hunting, playing softball, horseshoes, and was an avid poker player

He was a member of the Don Rounds Post 586 American Legion, South Jefferson Memorial VFW Post 5344, Ex POW Organization and the Battle of the Bulge Prisoner Group.

Robert B. Wagoner

Robert B. Wagoner, 95, of Wagoner Park Road, Alexandria Bay, died Friday morning at his home under the care of Hospice and surrounded by his loving family.

Born on February 7, 1922 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada. Robert was the son of Evard and Florence Dixon Wagoner. He graduated from Alexandria High School and attended Cortland College, majoring in Physical Education. He later received his Master’s Degree at St. Lawrence University and held his career as the School Administer at Indian River Central.

Robert served in the United States Army during WWII, earning the Bronze Star in the Battle of the Norwind. Purple Heart for wounds received in Heilbronn, and a Presidential Unit Citation for Norwind He later served as Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves.

Robert married Ester Mance on October 2, 1942. She passed away in August of 1983. He Married Ruth Woods in February of 1984. Ruth passed away in October of 2012. He started Wagoner’s Marina and Trailer Park on the family’s homestead that has been in the family since 1885.

He was a founding member of the Theresa Rotary Club, founding member of AGATE, the New York State Association of the Gifted and Talented, member of Theresa Methodist Church, ran the Theresa recreation program for years, active with the American Red Cross, a member of the Antique Boat Association, and was a Riverboat Captain.

Robert is survived by his sons, Robert (Connie) Wagoner, Alexandria Bay; Timothy Wagoner, Alexandria Bay; Phillip (Kim) Wagoner, Pennsylvania; Rolf (Patty) Wagoner, Alexandria Bay; Kimber (Dawn) Wagoner, Pennsylvania: his daughters, Penny (James) Wilson, California; Toni (John) Howard, Alexandria Bay; Kathy (Gene) Gamble, Adams Center, NY; Wendy (Keith) Honaker, Alexandria Bay; a sister, Nancy Dixon, Clayton Center; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A son, “Bumper” Wagoner, predeceased him, as well as his brother, Evard Wagoner.

Calling hours will be held from 4-8 pm on Tuesday, April 11th at Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay. The funeral mass will be held on Wednesday at St. Cyril’s Church at 10:00 am with Fr. Doug Comstock officiating.

Memorial donations may be made in Robert’s name to the Alexandria Bay Fire Department, River Hospital, and St. Cyril Catholic Church

CASTORLAND- Elmer Moser, 88, of State Route 410, Castorland, NY, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday morning, April 6, 2017, at his home under the loving care of his family and Lewis County Hospice.

Calling hours will be from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 p.m. on Saturday April 8, 2017 at Naumburg Mennonite Church. A committal service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Naumburg Mennonite Church with a Memorial Service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at the church, with Titus Mast and Myron Roggie, Pastors, officiating. Surviving are his wife of nearly 65 years, Kathleen; his children, Charlene and Daniel Miller of Watson; Darwin and Karen Moser of Castorland; Mervin and Eva Moser of Castorland; Marcia and Calvin Roes of West Lowville; Lucinda and Roger Zehr of Castorland; his sisters, Florence and Wilbur Jantzi of Croghan; Sharon and Delvin Mast of Grantsville, MD; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Moser of Copenhagen; Joyce Moser of Lowville; 17 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Irene and Leo Zehr; twin sisters Loretta Moser, who died in infancy, and Lorenna and Nelson Moser; twin brothers, Elton and Ellis Moser.

Elmer was born on January 4, 1929 in Copenhagen, NY, a son of the late Andrew R. and Emma Widrick Moser. He attended country school on the Number Three Road and Copenhagen Central School. Elmer worked on the family farm until his marriage. On October 1, 1952, he married Kathleen M. Lehman at Lowville Mennonite Church with Rev. Andrew Gingerich officiating. Elmer started a trucking business, hauling canned milk and bagged feed for GLF. He later contracted with Agway to haul feed and did contract spraying for many years. His passion was crop spraying, becoming the first commercial crop sprayer in Lewis County.

Elmer was ordained in 1963 as a minister in the Conservative Mennonite Church, and then served in the newly formed Naumburg Congregation, serving for 50 years, and then becoming overseer until his passing.

He served on many committees during his life. He was one of the founders of Beaver Camp, River Valley Mennonite School, and Brookside Senior Living Community. Elmer was active with Son Light Missions, La Colline, Haiti. He also served in many capacities in the Conservative Mennonite Conference.

Elmer loved spending time with his wife, family and friends, traveling and camping, and crop spraying. He enjoyed life and people.

Dawn Eileen Fiedler (Wagner), age 66, formerly of Boylston, NY, passed away April 1st in Florida. She had resided in Florida since 2009. Dawn was born July 16, 1950, the daughter of Jack and Barbara Pittman Wagner. She graduated from Barker High School in 1968 where she played bass clarinet and was selected for All State Band. Dawn also graduated from Albany Memorial School of Nursing in 1971. Dawn married Richard G. Fiedler on February 15, 1975. She was employed as a Registered Nurse for Hospice of CNY, retiring in 2007. She volunteered at NOCA for many years and was a paramedic and Director of Operations. Dawn enjoyed camping, bowling, golf and her grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband Richard, three daughters, Amy (John) Horack of Adams Center, Kimberly (Seth) Prater of Dayton, OH, and Michele (Michael) Zimmermann of Redfield, four brothers, David Wagner of Washington, Jeffrey Wagner of Medina, NY, Jack Wagner of New Hampshire, and Lawrence Wagner of Clarence, NY, five grandchildren, Carter, Madison, Benjamin, Henry and Harrison and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at noon, Saturday, April 15th at the Foster-Hax Funeral Home, 52 Park Street, Pulaski, with burial at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. to noon prior to the funeral.
